Description
UNrrn STATES ALBERT D. JUDD, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT lN ATTACHING ORNAMENTAL HEADS T0 PICTURE NAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,023, ated March 28, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. JUnn, of New Haven,in the State of Oonnecticut, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Attaching Ornamental Heads to Picture-Nails, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, whereln- Figure 1 is a section of a nail with an ornamental head thereon attached by my device. Fig. 2 is a section of said ornament-al head at the line :r x, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the nail separately.
Similar marks of reference denote the saine parts.
The ornamental heads of picture-nails have heretofore usually been screwed upon the nail itself, in order that such ornamental head may be removed while the nail is being driven into place and afterward screwed on again. This is necessary, because the porcelain or other ornamental head would be broken or injured if hammered upon in driving the nail into the wall or place of appliance. With nails so provided with a screw to take the ornamental head said screw is often battered in being driven, so that the head cannot be easily screwed on, and the metal has to be suficiently thick to hold the screw-thread, making the ornamental head heavy and costly.
The nature of my said invention consists in attaching the ornamental head to a picturenail, curtain-loop, or other article, by means of lugs passing through a notch and turned or brought into contact with inclined surfaces, so as to connect said head quickly and securely, and at the same time but little metal is required and the parts can be made of cast metal (malleable iron) and be light and cheap.
In the drawings, a represents the nail or other article to which an ornamental head is to be applied. b is a collar on said nail, and c c are lugs near said collar.
d is a disk or back piece of metal, in front of which is a piece of porcelain or other material to form an ornamental head, the parts being connected by a band, e, or other device adapted to the character of the ornamental head. In the said disk d is an opening, as represented at i, Fig. 2, to allow for the insertion of the end of the nail a and lug or lugs c c, and as the head is partially turned around on the nail the lug or lugs come in contact with a slight incline at the side of the opening z', which causes the disk to be conned and securely held between the collar b and lug or lugs c.
By my device the ornamental head can be easily applied or removed, the parts can be cheaply and quickly made, and liability to injure the parts by driving the nail is lessened, and when thernail has to be pulled out the collar b can be seized by the claw of a hainmer or other instrument.
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Attaching the ornamental head to a picture nail or other article by means of the disk d, collar b, and lug or lugs c, as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my lsignature this 5th day of December, 1864.
ALBERT D. JUDD.
Witnesses:
D. S. DUNHAM, E. M. JUDD.
