UNITED STATES PATENT. OEEicE.
JOHN SCOTT, OF SOUTHINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
CO MBINED TACK DRAW AND SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,688, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed May 25,
To a, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Southington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tack Draws and Sets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combined tack draw and set. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showingit in one of its positions for drawing a tack. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the tool in another position for drawing a tack, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the-steel blank used in forming my combined tack draw and set.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures. I My invention relates to tools or devices for drawing and setting carpetand other tacks; and it consists in the improved combinationtool made from a single piece of sheet-steel, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A desnates the handle of my improved tool; B the ferrule, and C the shank, of the combined draw and set. The latter is made of steel by cutting or stamping a blank D out of a flat piece of sheet-steel of the shape shown in Fig. at and then doubling the blank upon itself along its median line, (shown in dotted lines,) so as to form a tool of the shape shown in the other figures. This results in the formation of the bifurcated end prongs E, bifurcated rear prongs F of larger dimensions, slot G for the insertion of the head of the tack in using the device as a tack-set, and projecting shank H, whereby the device is attached to'the handle.
The manner of using-this device will read.- ily be understood by reference to the drawings, and does not require extended explanation. To draw a small tack, the bifurcated 1891. SQTIH41N0I8931984| (NomodeL) curved end prongs E are used, as shown in Fig. 2, and the tack is drawn or pulled by pressing the handle ina downward direction, the curved prongs F acting as a fulcrum or hearing for the handle. To draw a tack with a larger or thicker head, the larger rear prongs F may be used, and the tack is removed by moving the handle in an upward and forward direction, using the curved side f as a fulcrum or bearing. To set a tack, one side of the head is inserted into the narrow slot G, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in which position the tack can readily be inserted into the carpet and flooring.
This device, being made of doubled sheetsteel and in a single piece, is not apt to break or become accidentally injured. It can be made at a small cost, and is so simple in its construction and operation that its use will suggest itself to any person of ordinary intelligence without specific directions. By making it stronger and of larger dimensions it may of course be used for drawing nails the same as tacks.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States' 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described tack-draw, consisting of a single piece or blank of steel doubled upon itself to form the forwardly-projectii'ig bifurcated end prongs E, rearwardly-projecting curved and bifurcated prongs F, and shank C, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. A combined tack draw and set comprising a slotted and shaped steel blank doubled upon-itself to form the shank C, bifurcated curved prongs E and F, and slot G, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SCOTT.
