SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N o. 460,711, dated October 6, 1891.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. BRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The special object of the invention is to provide convenient mechanism whereby a sliding gate may be moved back and forth, the latch being lifted by the same mechanism previously to opening the gate.

In the drawings, A represents the gate, which slides on flanged rollers K K, arranged between the two upper rails a a', these rollers being pivoted on the posts L L.
H is a latch having the notch h, which engages the cross-bolt s between two posts S S, which may also be connected at the top and near the bottom by the cross-bars s s. The lever-latch H is fulcrumed at h on the vertical slat a2, so as to admit of being raised before the gate is opened.
E is a bar sliding on the stud J of the vertical slat d3, and slotted at e to allow of a movement on said stud before the gate begins to move back. This bar has a rod or extension F, whose front end is provided with a hanger G, which passes under the latch H. The rear end of said bar is arranged under a stud Z on the post L and jointed to the lower end of the diagonal lever C. The latter is fulcrumed atc on the post L2.
I is a keeper arranged vertically, and as a cross-brace to the gate, the two co-operating to guide and hold in its proper position the bar E and latch H.
The posts L L2 are connected by the crossbars R R2, and these by a vertical bar R3, while the post L2 and vertical bar R3 are connected by the horizontal bar R.
D is a rod connected at one end by a pivot to the lever C, and pivoted. at the other end to the lever E', the latter being fulcrumed to the vertical bar R2. The free end of lever E has two rods N N rising vertically therefrom and connecting at the top with the levers T T, fulcrumed on the cross-beam W, which is supported by the braces V. The levers T T may have pendent rods It within easy reach, one lever being on each side of the gate.
U represents a bottom guide for the gate as it slides back and forth.
The operation is as follows: The rod t is pulled downward and operates the mechanism so as first to lift the latch H and then to open the gate. Vhen it is desired to shut the gate and latch it, the levers are operated in a reverse .direction by pushing a rod t upward.
What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-.`
l. In mechanism for latching, unlatching, opening, and closing a sliding gate, the leverlatch H, the hanger G, and the slotted bar E F, combined with any suitable mechanism to move the bar E F'back and forth, as described.
2. The combination, with the latch H,
lhanger G, and slotted bar E F, arranged, as
shown, on a sliding gate, of the diagonal lever C, rod D, lever E', upright rods N N, the levers T T, and the rods t t, all arranged in connection with a superposed framing and posts, for the purpose set forth.
