UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
EDWIN O. EWING, 0F WHEELING, VEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE WHEELING OORRUGATING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ORNAlVI EN-TAL M ETAL PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,448, dated August 25, 1891.
Application filed April 28, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. EWING, of YVheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of WestVirg-inia, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Ornamental Metal Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in ornamental metal plates designed for use in the construction of ornamental ceilings, walls, wainscoting, &c., and it is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows in plan view three of my improved metal plates joined together. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line II II of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the metal plates.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts in each.
My improved metal plate consists of a piece of sheet metal 2 of suitable outline, whose edges are turned inwardly at right angles to form flanges 3, and are provided at suitableintervals with horizontally-projecting tongues 4, differently placed on opposite sides, so that two adjacent plates may be interlocked by means of said tongues, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the drawings the plates are illustrated as of quadrilateral form; but it should be understood that they may be made of other suitable outline.
Serial No. 390,747. (No model.)
In setting the plates in position they are placed side by side or end to end, so that the locking-tongues on one shall fit under the edges of the flanges 3 of the next adjacent plate, as shown in Fig. 1. The metal plates may thus be held together and may be con fined to the surface against which they are placed, either by suitable securing devices placed at the margins of the series, or when the nature of the surface against which they are applied will admit they may be secured by nails or tacks driven through the tongues.
My improved metal plate may be modified in form and in ornamentation in many ways by the skilled-constructor within the scope of the claims.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.1. Asancw article of manufacture, asheet-v metal plate having lateral lockingtongues, l,
substantially as and for the purposes def scribed. 2. As a new article of manufacture, a sheetmetal plate having marginal flanges 3 and locking-tongues 4 projecting therefrom, substantially as and for the purposes described. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of April, A. D. 1891. EDIVIN O. EWING. Witnesses:
J. A. EVANS, WM. L. EWING.
