Description

S. H. WlTMER.
Portable Coffee Mill.
Paten'ted lune 30, 1864.
Ses .n /Wf% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. VVITMER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR 'IO MAHLON M.
WOMBAUGH, OE THE SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED PORTABLE COFFEE-MILL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,3711, dated June 28, 1864.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. WITMER, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Portable Coffee- Mill; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to a coffee-mill adapted for camp and mining uses by reason of its` great compactness and light weight, coupled with completeness and efficiency.
Figure lis an axial section of my mill in condition for use. Fi g. 2 is a perspective view of the same in thc open form. Fi g. 3 is aperspective view of the apparatus as closed for carriage. V
A is a cylindrical box, having secured near its lower end a tinted concave, B. C is a hrid ge, having a screw-threaded boss, b, to receive a screw, D, whose point, entering the hollow foot e of the tinted burr or runner E, serves the twofold purpose of holdingthe said runner to an exactly central yposition and of aifording a means of setting it for coarser or for finer grinding. The upper part ofthe shaft Fjournals in a bridge, G, and terminates in a square head, f, to tit a winch, H, of such dimensions that it can be stowed in the upper part of the box A for carriage. The box A has near iis lower margin a swell, a., to steady and retain a cup, I, which is made to slip over the said swell a on the box A, an inside bead, on the cup being fitted to rest upon the upper surface of the said swell, and the spring of the cup being sufficient to hold it securely against accidental displacementl while permitting its removal, whenever desired, by a slight effort of the user. The box A is provided with a lid, J, a circular aperture, j, in which permits the insertion of that part of the winch H which engages with the shaft F.
Operation A mill of this description of two inches diameter and six inches length is found to hold easily two ounces of coiee, the same being sufficient, when properly ground, for a mess of four or five men. The winch being removed from the outside of the box A, the latter may receive its charge of berries, and will be ready for immediate service the moment the Inen rest for a meal or bivouac. In the act of grinding, the mill being held between the knees, or in the left hand merely, and the runner being rotated, the coffee as fast as it is ground falls into the cup I, which, having been taken ott' and emptied, may be restored to the position indicated in Fig. 3, and the winch H heilig stowed inside of the box A, and the lid J being closed, the apparatus may be placed in the pocket or otherwise disposed of for convenient carriage.
I have selected, to illustrate my invention, a cylindrical form of box, because I have fully tested its eciency and believe it to be the best; but inasmuch as square or polygonal boxes may be constructed substantially on `the above plan and made to serve a useful purpose, l do not propose to restrict the invention to the precise form represented.
I claim as new and of my invention- The portable telescopic coffee-mill, con-ll 'structed substantially as described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
S. H. WITMER. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, JAMES H. LAYMAN.
