TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,391, dated September 30, 18`9.

Be it known that I, RUDOLPH R. BUEHLER,
'l a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newv and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de.- scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to transom lifters; and it consists, primarily, of a novel construc- .tion of the lifting-arm and of the combination thereof with the connecting-arm and liftingrod; also, of the combination of these several parts with the guiding-bracket attached to the door-frame; and, finally, of the looking device. In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation showing a transom-lifter constructed according to my invention, the dotted lines upon said drawings representing the transom sash and lifter when the former is partially raised. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, the sash being closed and the lifter in its normal position. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the locking device, and Fig. 4 a sectional view thereof.

The principle upon which my invention is constructed is the making of the lifting-arm.
E, with a supplemental lifting-arm 2, the latter terminating at a point which shall be at about an angle of ninety degrees from the fulcrum of the former, which isa pivotal support at the juncture l upon a stationary post P, permanently secured to the windowframe at right angles therewith. A liftingrod A passes through the locking device F, and through two loop-guides H H (though the upper one only is essential) secured to the window-frame. The means of connection between the lifting-arm E and the lifting-rod A is provided intermediate through the supplemental arm 2 by a connecting-arm 3, which (when the parts are in normal position) is always parallel with the main lifting-arm E, and is pivotally connected with the liftingrod A at a point 7, which is immediately below the upper guiding-loop H when the transomlifter is in its normal position with v the window closed. The upper end of said connecting-arm 3 is pivotally connected at 6 with the supplemental arm 2 of the lifting-arm mech- 55 anism. In the drawings, two short arms 2 and 4 are shown. It will be seen, however, upon consideration of the principle upon which my lifter is constructed, that these are mechanical equivalents and cumulativey of 6o each other, and both are not to be used at the same time except to give strength where greater than ordinary strength is requiredthat is to say, the short arm 4 may take the place of the short arm 2, and vice versa, provided the upper end of either is constructed and arranged both in length and position relatively to the lifting-arm E andpost P, as shown in the drawings,inorderthatthe liftingarm E and the connecting-arm 3 shall be par- 7o allel with each other, the latter extending beyond the former when the parts are in normal position-that is, with the window closedto such a point that the supplemental arm 2 or an imaginary line in place thereof, if arm 7 5 4 be substituted, will always be at about an angle of ninety degrees from the main liftingarm E. The supplemental arm 2, if used, is permanently secured to and forms a part of the lifting-arm E, as also does the arm 4, if it 8o is used; but in the latter case is connected with the arm E below its fulcrum, say at the point 12.
Connection between the lifting-arm E-and the transom-sash is provided as follows: A 85 bracket c, secured to the window, is provided with a laterally-proj ectin g pin b, and the said lifting-arm E is slotted for a considerable length at d, which is its lower end. When the parts are in normal position (with the 9o sash closed) the pin b rests at the lower end of the slot cl, and as the sash is raised the said pin moves upward in the said slot, and again partially downward therein if the sash is fully distended to a right angle with the frame. It is apparent'that the parts may be reversed so as to lower the window instead of raising it, in which case the lifting-rod A is operated by pushing it upward instead of downward.
The locking device shown in Figs. 3 and 4 Ico is constructed as follows: A hollow cylinder F, with a at projecting base, is screwed through the latter to the door-frame. It is recessed laterally at A to permitthe passage through it of the lifting-rod A. It is screwT- threaded internally to admit the bindingscrew G to be screwed down tight upon the rod A and hold it in position. The set-screw G has a thin neck with a screw-threaded end. Said hollow cylinder F has two projecting lips 8 and 9 at its top, which are originally vertical, until the said screw is inserted in the cylinder iuthe course of construction,
`when the said projecting lips are bent inwardly around the neck of the screw G, notl sash and at its upper end to said post P, the supplemental lifting-arm, the connecting-ar1n 3, arranged relatively thereto and to the lifting-arm E, substantially as shown and described, and a lifting-rod operating the said connecting-arm 3, the said parts being constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. The combination, constituting a locking device for the lifting-rod of a transom-lifter, of a necked set-screw G and a hollow screwthreaded post or cylinder F, secured at its base to the Window-frame and recessed laterally for the passage therethrough of the lifting-rod, and provided at its upper edge with lips 8 and 9, capable of being bent inwardly around the neck of the set-screw, substantially as described.
