UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. TOXVNE, OF CHlPPEVA FALLS, XVISCONSIN.
RACK FOR NEWSPAPER-FILES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent N 0. 403,797, dated May 21, 1889. Application filed I annary 24, 1889. Serial No. 297,340. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. TOWNE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chippewa Falls, in the county of Chippewa and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racks for Newspaper-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in racks for newspaperfiles, the obj ect of the same being to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient means for supporting files, or other articles desired to be exhibited, the device being adapted to be suspended or attached to a wall, so that the supporting-bars upon which the files are placed can be raised and folded against the wall, or held in an inclined position out from the wall, so that they will be easily accessible; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved exhibiting-rack or newspaper-file holder, showing the file-supporting bars held at an incline with respect to the wall. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the bars held in a nearly vertical position.
A and A refer to transverse cross-pieces, which are adapted to be secured to the wall or other vertical support by means of hooks or other fastening devices, and to these crosspieces are rigidly attached vertical bars B B, the upper ends of which are provided with recesses 17. To the lower portion of the side pieces, B B, of the frame are pivotally attached arms or links 0 C, which are secured to the outer sides of the aforesaid side pieces, B B, and to the inner sides of the supporting-bars D D. The supporting-bars D D on their upslots (1 cl, and are connected to each other near their upper and lower ends by round cross rods E and F.
Newspaper-files or other articles which are attached to bars for exhibition are placed in the recesses d d, and will be held in a posi tion convenient for access by the means hereinbefore described. When it is desired that the supporting-bars D D shall project outwardly from the wall, the pivoted frame is raised and its upper end is pressed inward, so that the cross-bar E will engage with the notches 1) formed in the vertical side pieces, B. This will hold the supporting-bars in an inclined position, as shown. When it is desired to fold the pivoted frame so that it will he almost flat against the wall, the pivoted frame is raised so as to occupy almost a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 2, and said frame will be maintained in this position without liability of falling by spring-pressure of the bars D D against the links 0 O, which are in turn pressed against the rigid side pieces, B B, the lower cross-rod, F, being of less length than the upper rod, E. When it is desired to fill the supporting-bars D, they may be placed so that the upper bar will 00- cupy a position immediately in front of the vertical side pieces, B, and the supportingbars D will then be suspended from the arms so that said arms will be lowered and maintained in an almost vertical position, so that the side bars can be readily filled with files.
I claim- 1. In a newspaper-file holder or exhibitingrack, the combination of a rigid frame consisting of cross-bars A and A, having vertical side pieces, B B, the upper ends thereof being notched, supporting-bars D, connected to each other by cross-rods E and F, the bars D having notches d (1, arms 0 G, pivoted to the outer edges of the vertical bars E and to the inner edges of the supporting-bars D, the parts being combined and organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a newspaper file or rack, of a rigid frame having notches b b,
per or outer edges are provided with curved 5o arms 0 O, pivoted nearfithe lower ends of the side pieces of the frame, the outer ends of said arms being pivoted to the inner sides of the supporting-bars D D, said supporting- 5 bars being connected to each other by rods E F, the lower rod being of less length than the upper rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES H. TOWNE.
