K. L. GOOHT. SECURING RAILS T0 IRON SLEEPERS WITH IRON GRAMPS.

- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARL LOUIS GOOHT, OF CHEMNITZ, SAXONY, GERMANY.
SECURING RAILS TO IRON SLEEPERS WITH IRON CRAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,818, dated May 7, 1889.
Application filed September 29, 1888. Serial No. 286,750- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KARL LOUIS GOCHT, architect, of Ohemnitz, in the Kingdom of Saxony and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices for securing railway-rails to sleepers constructed of metal; and its object is to provide a rail-chair of simple construction, by means of which the rails and sleepers may be readily connected and firmly held to insure smooth travel of the cars, and as readily disconnected when desired.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both views.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a transverse sectional view and a side elevation showing my invention applied.
The metal rail a is secured to the metal sleeper b of the shape in cross-section of an inverted U by the chair 1). The chair 1) is passed through an opening, I), in the sleeper b from beneath the same, and its upper part is shaped to adapt it to fit snugly over the base of the rail. The rail a rests upon a frame, q, of iron or other suitable material. The frame q is held in position by pins 0', which pass through the same from side to side of the chair, as shown. lndwise movement of said frame in the chair is or may be prevented by projections to u thereon, the projection to having a heel which catches on one side of the sleeper b, a split pin, 3, one leg of which is straight and the other bent at a right angle, being passed through a suitable aperture, s, in the projection a, and turned therein, so that its bent leg rests on the upper face of said projection.
The proper adjustment of the gage at curves on the line is attained by placing thin plates of steel or iron corresponding with such curve between the edges of the slots or openings in the sleeper and the faces of the grooves of the chair, or between the chair and the edges of said slots or openings.
It will be seen that by my invention means are afforded for firmly holding the rails to the sleepers, which can only be destroyed by tearing asunder, crushing, or shearing the same, which is simply applied and easily disengaged when desired, which dispenses with the use of bolts, spikes, and wedges, as with ordinary wooden sleepers.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a rail and an inverted U-shaped sleeper, having an opening in its top, of a chair projecting through the said opening from beneath, a frame beneath the rail, and means for locking the frame to the chair, substantially asdescribed.
2. The combination, with the rail a and the sleeper I), having the opening I), of the chair 1), fitted in saidopening and adapted to embrace the base of the rail, the frame q, intervening the chair and the base of the rail, and having the projections u a, the latter engaging one side of the sleeper, the split pin 5, entering the projection 11 and preventing displacement of the frame, and the pin 0", for securing the frame in the chair, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
KARL LOUIS GOOHT.
