BREAD-BOARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,491, dated January 1, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that L'CHARLOTTE W. FULLER, of Lincoln, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bread-Boards, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide an inclosed and partitioned bread and pastry board simple in construction, readily cleaned, and adapted to contain in its compartments the rolling-pin, mixing-spoon, and other necessary utensils. The cover is hinged to the edge wall of the shallow boX or tray, the opposite edge wall swinging with the cover, and the partitions are removable at will, thus making the entire working surface of the board free from obstructions.

My invention is hereinafter fully described, and its novel features are particularly referred to in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figures 1 and 4 are perspective views of my improved bread-board, shown open, or with the cover thrown back. Fig. 2 represents the partitions removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the structure when closed. Fig. 5 is a detail.

A is the working-surface or kneading-board proper, to which are permanently secured the back wall, 13, and end walls, E, these parts forming four sides of a shallow tray or box. 0 is the cover connected to the upper edge of the back wall, I), by hinges D. F is the front wall of the box, secured to the free edge of the cover, and serving to close the front of the device when the cover is closed. It may be furnished with a suitable hook, H, to en gage with a staple, G, in the edge of the board A, or with'some equivalent fastening.

The ends of the cover are provided with strengthening-strips I, which broaden at one end, so as to correspond with the front wall, F, to the ends of which they are secured, and they close down just outside of the ends E, said ends 'lileii'ig rounded, beveled, or cut away to let the front F into its closed position. Handles J, secured to the ends E, are a convenience in carrying the device or in hanging it up.

I subdivide the interior space into compart ments, for the purpose of holding the ordinary utensils when not in actual use. Partitions K L, near one edge, give two small re ceptacles, the longer one designed to receive the rolling-pin, mixingspoon, and table-knife, and the smaller one adapted to hold cookiecutters, nutmeg-grater, and the like, While the main interior space may be vacant or may hold pans, sifter, or other implements, or even articles of food, the closed cover protecting them from dirt or flies.

I prefer to make the partitions together removable for more convenient cleaning of the board, and to make its entire surface available, when desired, I therefore secure the end of the short partition L to the side of the long one, K, as shown in Fig. 2, and form vertical grooves M at the required points in the ends E and back wall, B, so as to insert and re move the partitions vertically when the cover is raised, the grooves holding them in proper position when inserted. The cover, when turned up about vertically against the Wall, gives protection thereto, or when opened clear back may rest down on the table, or may be held up horizontally, as a shelf, by any suit able support. The removed partitions set on edge are useful for this purpose. (See Fig. 5.) A clamp-hinge or brace, N, may hold the cover at a desired angle, as in Fig. 4.

I claim as my invention-- 1. The improved bread board described, consisting of the lmeading-board A, with back B, and ends E E, in combination with the hinged cover 0, having front wall, F, secured thereto, and with interior partitions, K L, sub stantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The kneading-board A, free at its front edge and having the ends E E and back B secured vertically along its other edges, in combination with the cover C, having front F and strengthening end pieces, I, and with interior partitions made removable, substan tially as and for the purpose set forth.
