JOHN B. HAYES, DETROIT, MAINE.
SNOW-III PLow.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,522, dated June 12, 1888.
Seria-l No. 268,552. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. HAYES, of Detroit, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Blows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in snoW-plows, and more especially to such as are designed for use in breaking out snow in country roads. Its object is to beat or press down the snow, rather than to turn it out to the side, except in cases of uneven drifts, when by weighting the point a part of the snow is shoved out of the road.
It consists of a rigid Vshaped tongue, a bar having rounded or beveled under cornersV and extending beneath and across the open end ofthe tongue, and plates or knives to specially prepare the path for horse, and runners, arranged and attached as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings herewith annexed, in which Figure lis a perspective view of my improved plow, and Fig. 2 an elevation of the same, same letters showing similar parts, my
invention may be thus described.
At the rear or open end of a V-shaped tongue, a, and beneath the bars thereof, I attach a cross-bar or beater, o. The bar c is rigidly affixed,by means of bolts or other convenient means, to the tongue. The under side of the bar c is rounded, as shown at d in Fig. l, or it may be beveled, as shown at d in Fig. 2. Above the bar o and to the top of the V-shaped tongue is affixed the cross-bar b. The ends of both b and c extend ont beyond the sides a of the tongue.. Attached to the bars b ande are plates or knives j'. The plates of the bar c.-
e, attached to the bars b and e by bolts j and staple Z, in a manner similar to the platesf.
The operation of my device is as follows: In country roads it is desirable to beat down the snow, rather than to scoop it out of the path and pile it up on the sides. By placing a weight on the rear frame-work of my improved plow this object is accomplished, on account of the curved or beveled edges of the beater-bar c, which acts to prevent the snow from being rolled up in front and allows the whole plow to pass over the snow. The bar c, being placed beneath the sides a ofthe tongue, sinks down into the snow, so that the under sides of the tongue-bars rest on the snow and the point does not run into 'the snow. However, when the snow lies in uneven drifts, the tongue enters them and throws out some of the snow. By weighting down the point this can always be done. The plates e andfare designed to make paths, respectively, for the horse and the runners. These, being adj ustable, can be used to a greater or less extent, or not at all, as desired.
Having thus described my invention and its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a snow-plow, the combination of the tongue a with the bar c attached to the tongue, as described, and having its lower edges rounded or beveled, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
2. In a snow-plow, the combination, with the bars b and c and the V-shaped tongue, arranged as described, of the plates f, having slots g, bolts i, and staples k, all substantially as yand for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
3. In a snow-plow, the combination, with the bars b and c and the V-shaped tongue, arranged as described, of the plate e, having slot h, the boltj, and the staple Z, all substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN B. HAYES.
Witnesses:
