SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 373,030, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed May 18, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, ROBERT STEEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphiagand State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of
-ers arranged, respectively, in the upper portions of said chambers, which rotate with a vertical spindle which passes through the upper wall of the combustion-chamber, and a boiler located within' said chamber above the fire-pot, containing water for generating steam that finds its exit through a pipe leading in proximity to the blades of the fan in the combustion-chamber,whereby thecurrentis caused to impinge upon said blades and rotate the The fans may be rotated by currents of either steam or hot air, caused to impinge upon the blades, or the fan in theV hot-air chamber may be operated independently of the other, as will be more fully hereinafter described.

A is the fire -pot, having the customary grate, b, for the reception of fuel, and ash-pit provided with the door C. The fire-pot is surrounded by the metallic casing c, forming a chamber, B, for ,the reception of radiated heat, and also a passage for the ascension of currents of air through usual inletopenings in the bottom of the furnace.
D is the smoke and gas exit flue. E are exitf lines for hot air. These parts are common to Serial Nif, 202,581. (No model.)
H, which has its upper bearing in the capplate a, of the furnace, the lower bearing being arranged in any suitable device. Secured upon the lower end of said shaft, within the upper end of the drum above the fire-pot, is the fan G', constructed in like manner to the fan` G, which in the present instance is for the purpose of imparting rotary motion to the fan G by means ot' a current of steam issuing from the exit-pipe e of the boiler J, acting upon the surfaces of the blades, causing rotary lmovement to be imparted thereto.
The boiler J is situated within the fire-pot and supported by the walls thereof immediately above the mass of ignited fuel, receiving heat therefrom for the generation of steam within it. t
7L is the inlet-pipe for the admission of water, which may be supplied by any known means.
The drawings illustrate a means for imparting rotary motion to the fan G; but I do not .confine myself to this method, as any known mechanical means, or a current ot'v air or steam forced directly upon the surfaces of its blades, whereby it is caused to rotate and force the current of air charged with radiated heat up and into the eXit-ilues E, may be employed, my invention consisting in the employment and combination, with a furnace for generating heat, of afan orblower arranged as shown Vand described, and rotated by any means to effect the desired purpose.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the combustion-chamber, the outer casing forming the hot-'air chamber, the shaft for supporting the fans passing through the upper wall ot' the combustionchamber, the fans mounted on said shaft, 1ocated, respectively, in the upper parts of said combustion and hot -air chambers, and the boiler having a pipe whose end is in proximity to the blades of the fan in the combustionchamber, whereby the current of steam emanatng from the boiler is caused to impinge upon said blades and cause rotation of the fans, substautiallyin the manner herein shown and described.
