A lock for preventing the theft of outboard motors. This lock includes a pair of sleeve members which insertible receive the motor mounting clamp arms and a smaller sleeve receives a key which is held in locking engagement with a removable block type lock.

MART/N E Hl/VTZ LOCKING DEVICE FOR OUTBOARD MOTORS This invention relates to key type locks, and more particularly to a key operated locking device for the securement of outboard motors.
It is therefore the first object of this invention to provide a locking device for effectively preventing the theft of the motor from the transom of the boat the motor or motors are installed in.
Another object of this invention is to provide a locking device which will consist of a pair of sleeve members which will slip onto the mounting clamp arms of the lock, which also slideably receives a central and smaller diameter sleeve which will insertibly receive a pin member.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the type described of which the pin will be inserted transversely through the small diameter sleeve and will have annular groove means to be held fast within the lock member which is carried within the horizontally aligned main sleeves which will prevent a person or persons from loosening the motor mounting clamps.
A further object of this invention is to provide a locking device of the type described which will be much more effective than the use of padlocks, chains and the like as are used in the prior art.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a locking device for outboard motors which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a front view of the present invention shown partly broken away and the free position of the pin shown in phantom lines;
FIG. 2 is an end view of the central sleeve member shown removed from FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along the lines -3 of FIG. 2.
According to this invention, a locking device is shown to include a pair of hollow sleeves 11 having a flanged end 12.
Sleeves 11 are inserted onto the motor mounting clamp arms 13 of the outboard motor 14.
A smaller diameter sleeve 15 is insertible within the flanged end of sleeves 11 prior to their horizontal alignment and a lock 16 is placed between the aligned sleeves 11 which positions it to receive the removable pin 17.
Pin 17 includes a conical shaped head 18 which rests within the counter-sunk portion 19 of the transverse opening 20 of sleeve 15.
An annular groove 21 near the opposite end of pin 17 provides a means for the lock 16 mechanism to grippingly engage and render pin 17 stationery, thus preventing anyone from having access to the arms 13 in order to rotate them and remove the motor 14.
As will be seen in FIG. 1 of the drawing, lock 16 is provided with a keyhole opening 22 for the insertion of an appropriate key (not shown) which will be used to release pin 17 so that the sleeves .11 and the sleeve 15 may be separated so as to give access to the motor mounting clamp arms 13.
What I claim is: l. A locking device for an outboard motor having motor mount clamp arms, comprising a pair of axially aligned sleeves, the sleeves being adapted to releasably engage the clamp arms, an insertable third sleeve telescopically received within the pair of sleeves, transverse pin means carried by said third sleeve, and a removable lock member lockable to the pin means, said pin means and lock member securing said sleeves in clamp arms holding relationship.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said motor mounting clamp arms are freely received within said pair of sleeves and said arms are partially received within said third sleeve and the transverse pin means is located between the adjacent ends of said pair or sleeves.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said third sleeve is centered within said pair of sleeves and slideably receives said pin transversely, said pin being headed at one end and extending at its other end into the removable lock member.
4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein said pin when inserted into said third sleeve, extends outwards of said third sleeve and its extending structure is such so as to have an annular groove, said annular groove accomodating a key controlled element of said lock mechanism to prevent said pin from being dislodged when said lockis closed.

Claims (4)

1. A locking device for an outboard motor having motor mount clamp arms, comprising a pair of axially aligned sleeves, the sleeves being adapted to releasably engage the clamp arms, an insertable third sleeve telescopically received within the pair of sleeves, trAnsverse pin means carried by said third sleeve, and a removable lock member lockable to the pin means, said pin means and lock member securing said sleeves in clamp arms holding relationship.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said motor mounting clamp arms are freely received within said pair of sleeves and said arms are partially received within said third sleeve and the transverse pin means is located between the adjacent ends of said pair or sleeves.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said third sleeve is centered within said pair of sleeves and slideably receives said pin transversely, said pin being headed at one end and extending at its other end into the removable lock member.
4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein said pin when inserted into said third sleeve, extends outwards of said third sleeve and its extending structure is such so as to have an annular groove, said annular groove accomodating a key controlled element of said lock mechanism to prevent said pin from being dislodged when said lock is closed.
