Moore Attprney- Cullen, Settle, Sloman & Cantor 5 ABSTRACT A door knob assembly which includes an inner molded plastic cup-shaped base having an integral internal and external hub axially apertured to receive a spindle; and an outer metallic hub snugly assembled over said base and interlocked therewith.
1 Claim, 2 Drawing Figures 1 TWO-PIECE DOOR KNOB CONSTRUCTION BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Heretofore in many door knob assemblies, these are constructed of solid metal and which includes central hub adapted to receive conventional spindle.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a two-piece door knob construction wherein the central base portion is cup-shaped with an annular wall and a transverse bottom wall and with an integral hub molded thereto which projects inwardly of the base as well as outwardly therefrom and is formed with a polygonal bore to snugly receive a conventional spindle. Onto the low cost base made of plastic, there is removably mounted and interlocked therewith a metallic cupshaped shell of bronze, brass or aluminum to provide a solid door knob assembly in appearance at a greatly increased savings and manufacturing cost.
It is another object to provide an improved two-piece door knob wherein the central base is made of plastic and with an integral hub thereon which projects inwardly and outwardly thereof to cooperatively and snugly receive a conventional spindle and wherein the construction is such as to facilitate an easy assembly and interlock with conventional door rosettes.
It is a further object to provide an attractive twopiece door knob assembly wherein the outer cup is made of attractive bronze, brass, stainless steel or aluminum and has a finished appearance and which conceals the inner inexpensive plastic cup-shaped body and hub assembly. Said cup may be non-metallic.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing.
THE DRAWING In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of the present two-piece door knob assembly.
FIG. 2 is a section taken in the direction of arrows 2-2 of FIG. 1.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferred embodiment of the invention, and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set forth.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring to the drawing, FIGS. 1 and 2, the present door knob assembly 11 is applied to the door 13 fragmentarily shown and which has a transverse bore to receive the spindle and portions of the door knob hub.
Outer rosette 15 has a corresponding bore 17 and a pair of integral oppositely arranged bosses 19 which are interiorly threaded and adapted to receive fasteners 25.
Inner rosette 21 has a corresponding central bore and has a pair of outer counter sunk bores 23 adapted to receive the heads of fasteners 25. These fasteners extend through the inner rosette, through corresponding apertures in the door and threadedly engage bosses 19 of the outer rosette.
The present two-piece door knob includes a molded plastic base 29 of cup-shape, providing an annular outer wall and transverse bottom wall 31.
The molded plastic base 29 includes an axial hub portion which consists of the outwardly extending exterior hub 33 and the inwardly directed or interior hub 35.
Polygonal bore 37 extends axially through said hub and is adapted to snugly and cooperatively receive spindle 39.
The outer hub 33 adjacent the base 31 has an annular shoulder 41 adapted for cooperative spacing registry with the inner rosette 2l. Suitable fastening means are mounted upon the outer end portion of the outer hub 33 adapted to retainingly engage the inner rosette 21.
In the illustrative embodiment, this locking means is in the form of a snap ring 43 applied to the outer end portion of hub 33 and retainingly engages the inner surface of rosette 21.
Formed through the bottom wall 31 of the plastic molded base are a pair of diammetrically arranged clearance apertures 45 providing access to fasteners 25 through which a suitable screw driver may be projected for tightening said fasteners and for securing the rosettes with respect to the door.
The door knob is completed by the assembly upon the plastic base of the metallic cup 51 which is snugly or frictionally positioned over the outer annular wall of the plastic base 29.
The cup may be removably secured to the base frictionally or otherwise. In the illustrative embodiment, the method of securing includes the transversely arranged elongated arcuate leaf spring 47 which bears against the inner surface of the annular wall of base 29. Locking pin 49 is secured to and projects through a central portion of the leaf spring and radially outward through a corresponding aperture in the wall of said base and selectively through one of a plurality of transverse radial bores 53 in said cup.
Thus, on assembly of the cup over the base, the pin 49 under the tension of the leaf spring will snap into position when bore 53 is in registry therewith. Similarly,
to remove the outer cup, pin 49 need be merely manually depressed against the action of the spring to provide sufficient clearance.
An additional door knob 55 is mounted over the outer end of spindle 39, with its hub 57 secured thereto by pin 59 or other securing device.
As a part of the final assembly, before cup 51 is positioned over base 29, the spindle with its handle secured thereto is projected through the door and rosettes and through hub 35 on the interior of said base and secured thereto by the nut 61 threaded thereon, or other suitable fastening device.
Having descirbed my invention, reference should now be had to the following claims.
I claim: 1. A door knob assembly comprising a molded plastic cup shaped base having an annular wall and radial end wall;
an axial hub on and a part of said end wall; said hub having an axial bore of polygonal cross section adapted to cooperatively receive a spindle;
and an outer metallic shell of cup shape snugly mounted over and along and frictionally engaging said base and interlocked therewith, said cup extending completely over and enclosing said base and its end wall, the interlock between said base and outer cup comprising a leaf spring normally tensioned against the interior of the base annular wall;
and a retractible locking pin secured to said leaf spring and extending radially outward through corresponding apertures in said base annular wall and said cup.
