COMBINED PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,934, dated August 30, 1887. Application filed September 22, i886. Serial No. 214,243. (No model.)

pencil holders; and it consists, principally, in

a detachable stem capable of being wrapped or rolled upon itself so as to occupy a small space, and yet sufficiently stiff, when attached to the pen, to serve as a handle therefor.

It consists, further, in the construction and novel arrangement of certain parts, 11ereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

0 is the pen and pencil device, constructed as follows:

D is a cylindrical block, made of the indiarubber material called ink -eraser. The said block has one end, d, oonvexed or rounded and provided with a deep narrow recess, d, so curved in crosssection as to receive and hold the outer end or heel'of apen, a, as shown in Fig. 2. The outer end of the block D is provided with the circumferential rabbet d E is a tapering tubular stem open at its inner and larger end, which is of suitable size to be slipped upon the rabbet d and clasped and held thereon. The stem E is of flexible or unvulcanized rubber or equivalent material, so that it can be rolled up or wrapped upon itself, and yet its tubular and tapering form renders it sufficiently stiff to give the usual hand-support to the pen or pencil when Writing.

F is a coupling-tube, one end of which slips and holds upon the end d of the block D, and

the other upon the end of an ordinary lead pencil, H. The parts being all made of proper size permit the same. The said pencils are preferably cut in shortpieces, and when the device connected by a sleeve or coupling-tube is not in use the piece of pencil can be reversed in the tube F, so that its pointed end will be inside of the same and cannot easily be broken, and the piece itself will serve as a stopper to protect the pen in the coupling-tube F.

The recess d in the block D is made very deep, so that a nice adjustment of the pen may be effected, and at thesame time be adapted toreceive pens having heels of various lengths.

IVhen it is desired to write with ink, the sleeve F and the pencil H therein are removed from the pen-holding piece and the pen-point thereby exposed. To write with pencil the parts are connected as shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to erase either ink or pencil marks, the coupling-tube is removed from the block D and the pen drawn out of the recess (1. The end of the ink-eraser D can then be used.

The stem E, when the device is not in use, is wrapped orrolled upon the block D, the coupling-tube F and attached pencil being detached. The stem, when wound on the block D, has a rubber band put over it, as shown in Fig. 3, to keep it in place.

I contemplate the use of a suitable box in connection with my device, whereby when the parts are rolled and secured, asin Fig. 3, they may be stowed away in said box and conveniently carried in ones pocket, ready for use.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a block for holding a pen, and a flexible handle secured to said block, the normal position of said handle being in a line with the longitudinal plane of said block, said handle being adapted to be wrapped around said block, whereby the partsmay be carried in a compact form.

2. The combination, with a handle of a pen, of a block for holding a pen secured to said handle, said block being composed of ink-erasing material and provided with a recess for the reception of a pen, substantially as specified.

3. A pen-holder provided in its outer end with a longitudinal rearwardly-extending re cess for the reception of apen, in combination with a sleeve open at both ends, said sleevebeing adapted to receive the lower end of the pen-holder in one end and receive and engage a pencil in its outer end, substantially as specified.

4. The combination, in a pen and (pencil holder,withacylindrical pen-holding block recessed in one end for the reception of a pen, and circumferentially rabbeted on its other or inner end, of a recessed or tubular handle adapted to engage said rabbeted end, and a cylindrical sleeve adapted to engage one end of the pen-holding block, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
