Abstract
A treatment apparatus comprises a continuously running conveyer for the textile web and also comprises a feed roll which is arranged immediately ahead of the conveyer and which includes at least two separately driven coaxial adjacent roll portions, together with adjustable shrinking apparatus for applying the textile web in folds on the conveyor. At least one traction roll is arranged ahead of the feed roll and includes a corresponding number of separately driven roll portions. The drive at each side of the shrinking apparatus and the drives at the roll portions on the corresponding side of the traction roll and of the feed roll are coupled together to maintain their speeds in a constant ratio.

At least one traction roll is arranged ahead of the feed roll and includes a corresponding number of separately driven roll portions. The drive at each side of the shrinking apparatus and the drives at the roll portions on the corresponding side of the traction roll and of the feed roll are coupled together to maintain their speeds in a constant ratio.
4 Claims, 2 Drawing Figures APPARATUS FOR OBVIATING LONGITUDINAL RETARDATION OF A TEXTILE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION ahead of the conveying means, and which comprises at least two roll portions which are arranged axially adjacent to one another and are separately driven, and also with an adjustable shrinking apparatus for installing the edges of the textile web in folds upon the conveying means.
It is known, in order to adjust the tension of the edge of a textile web which is too slack or too taut, to regulate the shrinking apparatus accordingly, and thus for example to permit the shrinking apparatus to run faster on that side where the edge of the textile web is too slack.
It is further known, in order to obviate longitudinal retardation of a textile web, to divide the feed roll axially into at least two separately driven roll portions. By differently driving the two roll portions, in this way longitudinal retardation can be corrected.
Of course, if a driven traction roll is arranged ahead of the feed roll, this hinders the obviation of a longitudinal retardation and also leads to insufficiently independent control of the two shrinking devices.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The invention accordingly has for its object to provide an apparatus of the class described which eliminates the faults which have been pointed out and reliably obviates longitudinal retardation.
In accordance with the invention, this object is achieved in that at least one traction roll arranged ahead of the feed roll consists of a similar number of separately driven roll portions, and on each side of the textile web the drives of the shrinking apparatus and the roll portions of the traction and feed rolls which are located on that side are coupled together by means of a proportional velocity connection.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. I is a side view of the intake end of a treatment apparatus which is provided with an apparatus according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is a front view (in the direction of the arrow A of FIG. 1) of the apparatus according to the invention, in which the lateral stretching device is omitted.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT FIG. I shows in wholly schematic form a treating apparatus, consisting for example of a drying or fixing chamber 1, with a constantly running conveying means which consists of two needle chains 2. These needle chains secure the edges of the textile web 3, which is brought over a traction roll 30, a lateral stretching device 31 and a feed roll 4. The impaling of the textile web 3 on the needles of the two needle chains 2, with the formation of small folds, is performed in the known manner by two shrinking devices 5, 6 (consisting of brushes and rubber rolls connected therewith), which are driven through variable speed drives 7 and 8.
The feed roll 4 consists of the three roll portions 9, 10 and II, which are separately driven as follows:
From the motor 17 (or an electrically driven shaft) the middle roll portion 10 is driven through a variable speed drive 18 and a two-speed drive 10a (which is adjustable between normal and fast speeds) and through the shaft 10b. The roll portion 9 receives its drive from the motor 17 through the variable speed drive 18, a shaft 32, a two-speed drive 9a (adjustable between normal and fast speeds) and a drive chain 9b. The right roll portion 11 finally is driven from the motor 17 through the variable speed drive 18, the two-speed drive 11a and the drive chain 11b.
The left shrinking apparatus 6 receives its drive from the two-speed drive 9a through the drive chain 90, the shaft 33 and the variable speed drive 8, while the right shrinking apparatus 5 is driven from the two-speed drive 1 1a through the drive chain 1 1c, the shaft 34 and the variable speed drive 7.
The traction roll 30 consists similarly of three separately driven roll portions 35, 36 and 37, which are driven as follows:
The middle roll portion 36 is driven from the motor 17 through a variable speed drive 38 and a two-speed drive 36a (adjustable between normal and fast speeds) and a shaft 36b. The left roll portion 35 receives its drive from the motor 17 through the variable speed drive 38, a shaft 39, a two-speed drive 35a and a drive chain 35b. The right roll portion 37 is driven from the motor 17 through the variable speed drive 38, a two-speed drive 37a and a drive chain 37b.
The lateral stretching apparatus 31 (see FIG. 1), which is half omitted from FIG. 2 of the drawings, consists in general of two lateral stretching rolls 40, 41 provided with threaded surfaces, an idle roll 42 mounted on a fixed axis and an idle roll 44 which is adjustable in the direction of the double arrow 43. By means of this lateral stretching apparatus the textile web 3 has its breadth increased or maintained constant, in the known manner. Ahead of the traction roll 30, further similarly subdivided traction rolls may be provided.
The operation of the apparatus according to the invention in obviating a longitudinal retardation of the textile web is in detail as follows:
If for example the retarded left side of the textile web 3 is to be advanced, then the two-speed drives 9a and 35a are set to fast speed (for example by means of a built in solenoid). The
result of this is that by means of the chain drives 9b, 9c and 35b the left roll portion 9 of the feed roll 4, the left shrinking apparatus 6 and the left roll portion 35 of the traction roll 30 run faster than the middle and right roll portions as well as the right shrinking apparatus. The left side of the textile web 3 is thereby advanced in the desired manner, while the shrinking apparatus 6 can freely draw on the retarded left side of the textile web throughout a relatively great span, without encountering an appreciable resistance.
At this time the two- speed drives 10a, 11a, 36a and 37a of the middle and right roll portions are set to normal speed, so that the textile web in the middle and right portions is driven at normal speed. Accordingly, the textile web is not required to drive any idle roll portions.
If the right side of the textile web is retarded, then the twospeed drives 11a and 37a of the two right roll portions 11 and 37 and the right shrinking apparatus 5 are set to fast speed. With an arcuate retardation (that is with a retardation of the middle zone of the textile web) the middle roll portions 10 and 36 are set to fast speed by means of the two- speed drives 10a and 36a, while the left and right roll portions as well as the two shrinking devices run at normal speed.
Accordingly, as it will appear from the foregoing description, for each side of the textile web in the apparatus according to the invention the drives of the shrinking apparatus and the roll portions of the traction and feed rolls on the corresponding side of the apparatus are coupled together in a proportional speed arrangement.
The variable speed drive 38 makes it possible to introduce, between the traction roll 30 and the feed roll 4, a difference in speed which is optimal for the functioning of the lateral stretching apparatus 31. It will be apparent, without further explanation, that this difference in speed is maintained also during the correction of a longitudinal retardation of the textile web.
The two variable speed drives 7 and 8 which are connected ahead of the shrinking devices 5 and 6 make possible an excess in the speed of the shrinking devices over the speed of the feed roll 4, corresponding to the desired shrinking effect. Also this excess in speed remains during the correction of a longitudinal retardation.
In order that the middle roll portions 10 and 36 may not hinder the free drawing forward of the textile web on the more rapidly driven side, these middle roll portions may advantageously be connected to the corresponding shafts b and 3612 by means of an overrunning clutch.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for obviating longitudinal retardation of a textile web, in combination with a treatment apparatus that comprises a continuously running conveyer for the textile web and also comprises a feed roll which is arranged immediately ahead of the conveyer and which includes at least two separately driven coaxial adjacent roll portions, together with adjustable shrinking apparatus for applying the textile web in folds on the conveyer, wherein the improvement comprises at least one traction roll which is arranged ahead of the feed roll and which includes a corresponding number of separately driven roll portions, the drive at each side of the shrinking apparatus and the drives at the roll portions on the corresponding side of the traction roll and of the feed roll being coupled together to maintain their speeds in a constant ratio.

Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the feed roll and the traction roll each comprise three roll portions, each of which is driven through a separate twospeed drive, and all of which are driven through two variable speed drives from a common motor which is also connected to drive both sides of the shrinking apparatus.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the two-speed drive of each of the two outer portions of the feed roll is also connected to the corresponding side of the shrinking apparatus.
4. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a lateral stretching apparatus is arranged between the traction roll and the feed roll
Claims (4)
1. Apparatus for obviating longitudinal retardation of a textile web, in combination with a treatment apparatus that comprises a continuously running conveyer for the textile web and also comprises a feed roll which is arranged immediately ahead of the conveyer and which includes at least two separately driven coaxial adjacent roll portions, together with adjustable shrinking apparatus for applying the textile web in folds on the conveyer, wherein the improvement comprises at least one traction roll which is arranged ahead of the feed roll and which includes a corresponding number of separately driven roll portions, the drive at each side of the shrinking apparatus and the drives at the roll portions on the corresponding side of the traction roll and of the feed roll being coupled together to maintain their speeds in a constant ratio.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the feed roll and the traction roll each comprise three roll portions, each of which is driven through a separate two-speed drive, and all of which are driven through two variable speed drives from a common motor which is also connected to drive both sides of the shrinking apparatus.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the two-speed drive of each of the two outer portions of the feed roll is also connected to the corresponding side of the shrinking apparatus.
4. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a lateral stretching apparatus is arranged between the traction roll and the feed roll.
