' AUGUST GOERTZ, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
? FA STENI NG FOR SATCHEL AND POCKET-BOOK F RAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed June 28, 1836.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AU GUs'r GOERTZ, acitizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Pocket-Book and other Bag Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be afulhclear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa- 11 in drawin s and to letters of reference- Y s g,
marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to certain improvements in fastenin'gs for that class of bag, purse, or satchel frames in which the catch is arranged in a recess formed at the center of said frame between the separated ends of the strengthening ribs or beads formed longitudinally thereon.
The invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will ing certain eccentric be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanyingdrawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan ofthe frame; Figs. 2 and 8, cross-sections thereof taken centrally through the catch, the first showing the catch in fastening engagement and the second showing the catch uplifted to allow a separation of the frame-sections; and Fig. etjs a deta l perspective view of the catch, showing the under side thereof.
In said drawings, a a indicate the ordinary hinged sections of the frame, provided with tubular strengthening-ribs a-a, which extend along the top of the frame and are separated at the center, forming recesses in which the catch b has its bearings. Said catch is actuated to hold the sections together by aspring, b, in about the manner described in an application filed contemporaneously herewith, and numbered serially 206,492; In said contemporaneous application a catch is shown havprojections extending in a direction opposite to the finger projection herein shown to engage the side or top of the Patent No. 352,687, dated November 16,1886.
Serial No. 206,493. (No model.)
frame and limit the movement of the catch. This stop or limiting projection, in that it extends beyond the line of the frame, is by some buyers in the market considered in a degree unsightly and tends to render the frame bulky; and, again, when it is of considerable size and u of a shape similar to the finger projection, tends to confuse the person opening thepurse. To avoid its use and the objections arising therefrom and yet retain the advantages of a stop, Ihave formed on the frame at a point beneath the catch an upwardly-projecting teat or lug, c, and in the bottom of the catch aslot or recess, b, into, which the projection or lug 0 extends, the slot allowing requisite movement of the catch. Thenotoh b engages the co-operating catch (1, formed on 'the adjacent frame-sectionin theordinary manner. Bythe construction describedthe limiting mechanism is hidden or nearly hidden from view.
Changes may be made in the device by pro- -viding equivalent parts for those described without departing from oravoiding the scope of this invention.
I am aware thatin thepatent of Prahar, No. 339,577, a frame is shown and described hav-. ing a spring-latch similar in arrangement to the catch 1), herein specified, but having arearwardly-extending flange adapted to come in contact with the side of the frame to limit its scope or movement. In the improved device the use of this flange is avoided for reasons already given, and the mechanism for limiting the movement of said catch is sufficiently concealed, so as not to be objectionable.
What I claim as new is The combination, with the hinged sections, oneof which is provided with a limiting projection and the other with a co-operating catch, of a catch, b, provided with a slot or recess,
b on its under side, intoywhich said projeco- .June, 1886.
