CAMPER'S CUPBOARD Filed May 27. 1968 "I INVENTOR.
@- 4 flan 4w i. //A6/V United States Patent 3,519,318 CAMPERS CUPBOARD Donald E. Hagen, 34304 Judy Lane, Palm Springs, Calif. 92262 Filed May 27, 1968, Ser. No. 732,189 Int. Cl. A47b 75/00; A47f /08 US. Cl. 312-245 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE One of the objects of the invention is to provide a heavy collapsible canvas cupboard, having detachable top and shelf boards, that can be hung for quick camping use.
Another object of the invention is in the provision of a portable collapsible canvas cupboard arranged for rapid extensible hanging use.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a detachable rod means for sustaining the collapsible cupboard for table supported use.
The fundamental theory of the present invention is to furnish campers a portable foldable canvas cupboard that can be set up quickly for use in either a hung or table supported manner. The apparatus may be used as a canvas soaked evaporative cooler if desired.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon consideration of the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, herewith, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the device hung in one position of use;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the device in a table supported position of use;
FIG. 3 is a perspective schematic view of the collapsible cupboard;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the device in carrying position;
FIG. 5 is a view taken on the line 55 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the device with a zipper type front flap.
The drawings disclose a preferred embodiment of the invention. A heavy canvas rectangular shaped cupboard exterior is formed with a top 10, bottom 12, sides 14 and 16 and back 18. The front of the cupboard is open except for two narrow vertical side or securing strips 20. The elements are cut and sewed in a suitable manner to form a rugged and weather proof casing. A top supported front cover 22 may be secured at 24 in a plural manner to lower ends of side strips 20. The front cover 22 may be alternatively zipper secured at 25 as shown in FIG. 6. A pair of front flap tie strings are shown at 27. Although a canvas covering has been indicated, any other material such as pliable plastic or the like might well be used.
The heavy canvas exterior although foldable in collapsed position (FIG. 4) is sufficiently strong to practically assume a rectangular form when expanded. However, to insure solid support of elements therein; plural 3,519,318 Patented July 7, 1970 board shelves 28 and bottom board 28a are placed on horizontally disposed plural canvas shelves 29 secured to the sides. A flat cupboard forming and supporting board 30 has connection with the canvas top 10 as shoam in FIG. 5.
A cupboard hanging chain 32 is grommeted at 34 in the top 10 and passing through an aperture 36 in the board 30 is then connected to the board by means of a large chain ring loop 38 and washer 40. The connection is loose for collapsed portability. Cover tie straps of any kind desired may be attached as shown at 41.
When the device is hung from a branch, FIG. 1, or in any other manner, the apparatus as described will assume an extend complete and secure cupboard. However, if the collapsible canvas cupboard is to be set up on a table or otherwise as in FIG. 2, a rod 42 must be passed through coinciding openings 44 and 46, respectively, in the plural board shelves 28 and cross canvas shelves 29. The rod 42 rests on the bottom shelf and abuts the underside of the top board 30. The lower canvas shelf and board 28a are apertured to receive the rod 42 and the bottom end thereof is placed in an offset position as shown in FIG. 3. A loop or ring 50 for securing the hanging cupboard is shown in FIG. 1.
The operation of the device is simple, easy and convenient. It is easily carried in the collapsed position of FIG. 4 and either hung for use as shown in FIG. 1 or placed on a table as disclosed in FIG. 2. The front flap may be detachablly connected as desired. The heavy canvas exterior may be water soaked and the cupboard be cooled by evaporative action if desired. The apparatus need not be rectangular in shape although preferred.
I claim:
1. A campers collapsible cupboard comprising:
a cupboard shaped collapsible canvas exterior having an open front and flexible attachable cover;
cross canvas strips therein forming flexible shelves;
at flat board or other material in the top of the canvas exterior shaping the cupboard when extended;
means for supporting said flat board to extend and give shape to said cupbooard; and
flat shelf boards co-extensive with and supported by the cross canvas strips.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 in which a hanging chain or strap passes through the canvas exterior and is secured to the top board.
3. A device as set forth in claim 1 in which a detachable rod is provided for supporting the flexible cupboard when in table use.
4. A device as set forth in claim 1 in which the flat shelf boards are detachable.
5. A device as set forth in claim 3 in which the detachable rod passes through openings in the canvas and flat board shelves and abuts the top board and bottom shelf.
