June so, 1970 v s. C. NESTEGARD Sm HOLDER Filed Sept. 11. 1967 w mm Wm W5 N m m C m 0 m J ATTORNEY United States Patent 01 3,517,905 Patented June 30, 1970 3,517,905 SIGN HOLDER Sander Charles Nestegard, 403 Karen Place, White Bear Lake, Minn. 55110 Filed Sept. 11, 1967, Ser. No. 666,790 Int. Cl. G09f 7/18 US. Cl. 248-469 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A sign holder having a triangular shape in plan for displaying three equal sized rectangular cards to make the holder multidirectional.
This invention relates to a sign holder and specifically to sign holders as used in retail stores to advise the buying public of sales, prices, brand names, etc.
It has previously been commonplace for retail stores to use sign holders for display advertising and pricing, which holders have rectangular frames to receive two back-to-back rectangular cards to afford two-directional viewing of the sign. The known holders are formed with a slot in the center at the top of the holder to receive and frame the pair of back-to-back cards in rectangular openings in the opposite sides of the holder. These frames are formed in various ways and generally have a standard or sleeve secured below the frame to receive a support.
The present invention affords a new and novel holder to support display cards and thus attract the buyers attention and will be readable from any direction around the holder.
The sign holder of the present invention is relatively simple in construction, but in the many years of retail store fixture manufacturing has not been present.
The sign holder of the present invention permits easy insertion of the cards and properly supports the card against warping or bowing due to changes in humidity.
The sign holder of this invention comprises a closed equilateral three-sided frame with each side having a rectangular configuration and an enlarged central rectangular opening and a base connecting and secured adjacent the bottom of each side.
The above and further novel features and advantages of the sign holder of the present invention will be more fully understood after reading the following detailed description which refers to the accompanying drawing wherem:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a sign holder formed in accordance with the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a plan view; and
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view.
The sign holder is formed preferably from sheet stock of steel or aluminum. It is stamped to form two connected rectangular frame sections or sides and two integral parallel bars which form the upper and lower bars of the third frame. The two sides are formed by three wide strips joined by four narrower parallel bars. The free ends of the two parallel bars may be joined as by welding or soldering to the strip forming one vertical edge of the first frame after the stamped section is bent at the center of each of the wide strips back upon itself at an angle of 60 to form a closed triangular frame.
The closed frame thus formed comprises three equilateral sides 11, 12 and 13. The side 13 is formed by joining the free ends of bars 14 and 15 to an edge of a vertically disposed strip 16 as by weldments indicated at 17. Strip 16, with a strip 18 and bars 19 and 20, form the first side 11. Strip 18 and a strip 21, with connecting bars 22 and 23, form the second side 12. Bending strips 16, 18 and 21 along their longitudinal axis gives them an appearance from a position normal to the sides of a width equal to that of the upper and lower bars forming for each side a frame of a symmetrical configuration.
A base 24 is provided for the holder and comprises means joined to each of the sides adjacent their lower edge and extending toward the center of the frame which afford means to hold the display cards in the holder. The base illustrated is a plate having three arm members, each joined at a free end to the lower inner edge of a side as by welding. In the illustrated embodiment the base 24 has an esthetic shape formed of curves in a three-prong design with a projection or normally upwardly projecting support member 25 positioned near each side in spaced parallel relation thereto. The spacing being sufiicient to receive a pasteboard card 26 of at least 10 ply between the members 25 and the bars 13, 20 and 23. The width of each side is sufiicient to receive a standard width display card with the edges of each card meeting in the corners and providing mutual support on the edges. The projecting members 25 provide a central support to restrict bowing of the cards 26 with changes in humidity. In the disclosed device the members 25 are short tabs cut out and bent upwardly from the plate 24 and have a height not greater than the width of a bar.
Beneath the center of base 24 is secured the supporting means for the sign holder 10. In the illustrated device the support is a cylindrical sleeve 27 formed at one end with a small reduced diameter stem which may fit in an opening in the center of base plate 24 and be swagged or otherwise secured therein.
A rod 28 is fitted in the center bore of sleeve 27, which rod projects upward from a heavy base member 30 having an esthetic scalloped configuration.
The sides 11, 12, and 13 may be of a size to frame any conventional sign cards, whether 5 /2 x 7 inches, 7 x 11 inches, 11 x 14 inches, 14 x 22 inches, or 22 x 28 inches. and either dimension of each size being the width dimen- S1011.
Having thus described the present invention, it is to be understood that slight modifications may be made herein, but all such modifications are contemplated as within the spirit and scope of this invention which are covered by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A sign holder for supporting three card-like signs in a triangular array with each card framed by a rectangular border, said holder comprising three planar sides of equal height joined one to the other at their edges to form a triangle, each side being defined by four thin planar bars of equal width forming a thin planar rectangular frame about a rectangular center opening, a base joining said three sides at the bottom and centrally of each side, and a support member projecting from the base near the center of each side in spaced relationship thereto whereby said signs positioned within the holder adjacent and parallel to each side areheld in vertical position behind each side by the base and in a planar position therewith by the support members and by contacting each other adjacent the inner corners of the holder.
2. A sign holder according to claim 1 wherein said support member comprises a short tab projecting upward from the base.
3. A sign holder according to claim 1 wherein said frame forms an equilateral triangle in plan with equal-sized sides.
4. A sign holder according to claim 3 including a support for the holder secured to the center of the base and depending therefrom.
