L. L. HOUSE April 14, 1970 BOX TOY Filed April 22, 1968 I N VEN TOR.
Lina? Lee House United States Patent 3,506,302 BOX TOY Linda Lee House, 2430 NE. 215th St., North Miami Beach, Fla. 33160 Filed Apr. 22, 1968, Ser. No. 722,838 Int. Cl. A47c 5/12 U.S. Cl. 297148 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A toy for small children in which they may sit and watch television. This object is box-like in structure and has member supports, a removable beverage cup and play toys and bowl. The horizontal member may also be removed for cleaning by twisting.
This invention relates to boxes and more particularly a box toy for small children.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a box-like toy which will have side walls, end walls, one of which forms a back rest, the interior allowing the child to sit within while watching television or otherwise playing or eating.
Another object of this invention is to provide a box toy which will have wings horizontally extending from the side walls which will support a removable horizontal member upon which may be placed snack bowls or plates and horizontal member is also provided with an opening in which a flanged topped beverage cup may be contained.
A further object of this invention is to provide a box toy which will have pivotable latch members, the latch members providing a means of securing to the wings of the box so that the foodstuffs placed upon the horizontal member will not be upset accidentally by the child and will also allow the horizontal member to be removed for cleaning.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a box toy which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and eflicient in operation.
These and other objects will become readily apparent upon a study of the following specification together with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the lines 2-2 of FIGURE 1.
According to this invention, a box toy is provided with a pair of parallel side walls 11, and end wall 12 at one end and extending back rest 13 at the other end. Box toy 10 is provided with a bottom wall 14 upon which the small child may sit with the horizontal member 15 provided with a central opening 16 in which a beverage cup 17 may be placed. Beverage cup 17 is provided with a flange 18 to prevent cup 17 from falling through the opening 16 which is of smaller diameter than the flange 18. Cup 17 is also provided with a straw 19 for sipping the beverage contained therein. Horizontal member 15 also provides for bowls 20 in which food is placed for the child to eat. The ends of horizontal member 15 are sup- 3,506,302 Patented Apr. 14, 1970 ported upon the tapered wings 21 at the upper extremity of side walls 11 and is held in place by pivotable latch members 22 which are secured to wings 21 by means of screw 23 which allow latches 22 to be freely pivotable in order to remove horizontal member 15 for cleaning.
It will be noted that small children love to sit in boxes and this box toy 10 allows them to have their own personal snack box and will save the mothers considerable work because the children will not be sitting on carpeting, polished floor or expensive furniture while spilling food and beverages.
It shall also be noted that the bowls 20 are secured in position by suitable means on the top surface of the horizontal member 15, thus preventing the spilling or falling of the bowls 20 accidentally.
When the child is finished for the day, all of the refuse created by the child remains within the box toy 10 and the mother may push the box toy 10 to the kitchen in order to detach the horizontal member 15 so that she may wash it and the other portion of the object may be emptied of its crumbs into the garbage pail and may be easily hosed out if needed.
What I new claim is:
1. A childs toy comprising a pair of spaced apart side walls, a bottom wall, an end wall and a backrest forming an open box for seating a child therein, a pair of wing elements extending at substantially right angle along upper edge portions of each of said side walls, a substantially fiat article support member extending horizontally and transversely across the open portion of said box, end portions of said article support member resting on said wing elements, latch members pivotally mounted on each of said wing elements, said latch members having an offset leg portion engaging said article support member and removably securing said article support member on said toy, said article support member having an opening for receiving a beverage cup, said beverage cup having a flanged portion engaging said article support member and permitting said cup to be supported in said opening.
2. The structure as recited by claim 1 taken in combination with a plurality of receptacles for containing food secured on said article support member.
3. The combination according to claim 2 wherein said wing elements are tapered, increasing in width in the direction of said backrest whereby a child seated in said toy may use said wing elements as armrests.
