PATENTEU DEC] 5 I976 SHEET 1 [IF 3 PATENTED 0501 51970 SHEET 2 OF 3 CARTON INTENDED TO CONTAIN A ROLL OF A WEB- SHAPED MATERIAL AND COMPRISING A TEARING DEVICE The present invention relates to a carton intended to contain a roll of a web-shaped material from which pieces are meant to be torn off and comprising a number, preferably four, of sidewalls parallel to the longitudinal direction of the roll, a joint panel which is also longitudinal, and suitable end closing flaps.
The carton according to the invention is characterized in that the joint panel comprises a tearable strip, one of whose edges is saw-toothed, so that a portion of the joint panel which remains after the tearing operation will obtain a corresponding serration and may be used for tearing off the said pieces of the web-shaped material.
The carton according to the invention has considerable advantages in relation to previously knownconstructions of the same kind. Thus,no additional means have to be attached to the device, which was previously usual, e.g. in the nature of steel blades or the like, in order to permit the said pieces of material to be torn off. Furthermore, in its closed state the carton has a completely smooth outer surface. An additional advantage is that the carton blank is of very simple shape and easy to stamp out.
Additional advantages will be apparent from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings showing a preferred embodiment of the subject matter of the invention.
F lG. 1 shows the blank for a carton'according to the inven- I tion.
FIG. 2 shows the completely closed carton.
FIG. 3 shows the carton open and with part ofa web-shaped material projecting from the carton.
As appears from FIG. 1, the blank comprises four sidewall panels 1, 2, 3 and 4, a number of end closing flaps 5 to 14 and a joint panel, which is divided into two partial panelslS and 17 by a tearing strip 16.
The partial panel 17 is meant to be glued or otherwise fixed to the wall panel 1. The end closing flaps starting from the respective ends of the joint panel to 17 are divided up into partial panels 11 and 12 and 13 and 14, respectively, by means of slots 18 and 19, respectively, said partial panels being integral with the respective partial panels 15 and 17, respectively. The two ends of the tearing strip 16 are defined by extensions 20 and 21 of the respective slots 18 and 19, At least the extension 21 is somewhat extended onto panel 14 proper, e.g. l or 2 millimetres. Consequently, it is always easy to grip the said end of the tearing strip 16, when the carton is to be opened. The panel portions 11 and 12 are connected by means of an unbroken portion 22, which is formed by the slot 18 not extending all the way to the outer margin of the end kit closing flap. in the same way, the panel portions 13 and 14 are connected by means of an unbroken portion 23. The tearing strip 16 is formed by a number of W-shaped through punchings or line cuts 24 and essentially V-shaped punchings or line cuts 25. Between the W-shaped punchings 24 there are formed unbroken portions 26. As is shown by FIG. 3, these unbroken portions do not affect the tearing properties of the future tearing edge.-The rest of the unbroken portions 26 will as a matter of fact be located in every other tooth gap and on the torn-off strip 16, respectively. Finally, reference numeral 27 designates the web-shaped material from which pieces are meant to be torn.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiment described above but may be varied within the scope of the following claims. Thus, the end closures of the carton may be embodied in many different ways within the scope of the invention.
lclaim:
.1. A carton for dispensing a roll of web-shaped material comprising a pair of longitudinal sidewalls, a top wall and a bottom wall, two of said walls being outer walls, end flaps therefor to form a closed carton for the web, a longitudinal joint panel wall longitudinally contiguous with one of said outer walls and overlapping the other of said outer walls, said oint panel wall incorporating as an integral part thereof a longitudinally extending portion forming a tear strip, one side of said tear strip having a serrated configuration thereby to develop a serrated cutting edge when said tear strip is removed for tearing off portions of said web.
' 2. A carton as claimed in claim 1, wherein the joint panel wall is provided with end flaps, each flap being provided with a transverse slot extending from the adjacent end of the tear strip to a point near the outer margin of said flap and the inner end of at least one slot extending transversely of the longitudinal axis of said tear strip a short distance inside the inner end of said flap whereby when the carton is erected said tear strip will extend a short distance beyond the edge of said erected carton to facilitate gripping of said tear strip.
3. A carton as claimed in claim 1, wherein the serrated configuration of the tear strip comprises a series of spaced W- shaped line cuts connected by spaced uncut portions of the joint panel which are severed when the tear strip is removed.
4. A carton as claimed in claim 3, wherein the uncut portions between the series of spaced W-shaped line cuts are disposed in the gaps between the teeth of the serrated cutting edge when the tear strip is removed.
5. A carton as claimed in claim 2, wherein the transverse slot extending to a point near the outer margin of each flap of the joint panel wall divides each flap into'substantially two portions with sufficient flap material at the outer end thereof to connect the two portions together.
