No. 613,929 Claims priority, application Japan, Nov. 1, 1966, 41 72 294 Int. Cl. Db 3'/02, 55/10 US. Cl. 112-158 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a fancy-stitching sewing machine and more particularly to the improvement of needlebar devices with double needle action by use of which figures, letters and the like can be automatically stitched.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide needle-bar devices with double needle action in a fancystitching sewing machine whereby patterns asymmetrical as well as symmetrical with respect to the left and the right can be effectively stitched without turning back cloths to be sewn and interrupting needle motion.
Other objects, principle and details will become clear from the following description with respect to the preferred embodiments taken in conjunction with the appended drawings.
Referring to the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a front view partly in section of the needle-bar device according to the present invention connected to a sewing machine, part of said sewing machine being omitted;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation partly in section of said needle-bar device with the left needle and the left needle holder removed;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a pair of zigzag controlling rods;
FIG. 4 is a top plane view of a fiat plate to which a pair of needle holders are connected;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a needle holder;
FIG. 6 is a diagram showing some examples of patterns which can be easily sewn by use of the device according to the invention;
FIG. 7 is a perspective view of a pair of needle holders which are sow formed as to be pivotally supported by a common pin in an overlapped position;
FIG. 8 is a sectional view of another embodiment embodying needle holders and the oscillating mechanism thereof;
FIG. 9 is a front elevation of the device shown in FIG.
horizontal arms 11, 11" and 11'. In axial holes bored respectively through horizontal arms 11" and 11" there is s-lidably inserted a needle-bar 13 said needle-bar being caused to move up and down as in the case of an ordinary sewing machine by the crank rod 14 which rotates together with the main shaft 14 of the sewing machine.
At the lower end of the needle-bar 13, as best shown in FIGS. l-2, there is attached thereto a fiat plate 15. On the bottom surface of the flat .plate 15, there are pivotally supported right and left needle holders 16a and 16b by means of pins 17, each of the needle holders having an inverted L shape with horizontal and vertical portions. The upper surfaces of said horizontal portions are formed flat so as to be in close contact with the lower surface of the fiat plate 15. Further, in order to ensure said contact, metal fittings of inverted L shape 18a and 18b are screwed down to the vertical portions of said needle holders 16a and 16b respectively by means of screws 19, whereby needle holders 16a and 1611 can smoothly oscillate in a horizontal plane about pins 17 respectively as pivots.
To the lower ends of the needle holders 16a and 16b are attached needles 20a and 2012, respectively, by means of setscrews 21, said needles 20a and 20b moving up and down together with the needle-bar 1 3 and oscillating to the right and the left individually according to the oscillatory motion of the needle holders 16a and 16b respectively, the lower ends of said needles 20a and 20b going into and out of the vertically rotating shuttle 22.
In the axial holes bored through the horizontal arm 11' of the supporting frame 11 are rotatably inserted rotating sleeves 23a and 23b symmetrical with respect to the needlebar 13. At the upper ends of the rotating sleeves 23a and 23b there are integrally formed therewith connecting arms 23'a and 23'b, to one end portion of which are pivotally connected connecting rods 24a and 24b, respectively. The pivotally connected end portions of said connecting rods 24a and 24b, which are actuated by the zigzag generating device (not shown) in the sewing machine, oscillate independently in a horizontal plane whereby said rotating sleeves 23a and 23b are turned righthandedly or lefthandedly. In the hollow interior of the rotating sleeve 23:: is inserted a zigzag controlling rod 25a, whose horizontally bent upper portion is fitted in the axial slot made through the rotating sleeve 23a so that said zigzag controlling rod 25a may rotate together with the rotating sleeve 23a and move up and down independently of it.
The lower end portion of the zigzag controlling rod 25a, being inserted through hole 15a bored through the flat plate 15, is bent to form a horizontal shoulder portion 25'a and a hook portion 25"a, which are positioned in the groove 16a made on the upper surface of the horizontal portion of the needle holder 16a. Thus, when the zigzag controlling rod 25a rotates, said horizontal shoulder portion 25a causes the needle holder 16a to oscillate about the pin 17 as a pivot. Quite similarly is disposed the zigzag controlling rod 25b associated with the needle 2017 between the rotating sleeve 23b and the needle holder 16b.
In a sewing machine provided with the present needlebar device, the right and the left needles 20a and 20b oscillate individually in a horizontal plane according to the zigzag generating device while they move together up and down and thus, asymmetrical patterns, for example, as shown in FIG. 6, as well as symmetrical ones can be easily stitched. If necessary, the needles 20a and 20b may oscillate beyond the center line of patterns to be stitched so that the sweeping regions of both needles 20a and 20b partly overlap each other.
When the shuttle 22 of the sewing machine rotates horizontally as shown in FIG. 7, the right and the left needle holders 26a and 26b are pivotally supported by a common pin 17a in an overlapped position at the bottom surface of the needle-bar 13. In this case, the radius of the circle described by the needle 20'a or 20"b is set equal to that of the circle described by the bill edge of the shuttle 22.
Also, needle holders and the mechanism to oscillate them individually in a horizontal plane may be constructed as shown in FIGS. 8-10. Referring to these figures, in the base 28 fixed at the lower end of the needle-bar 27 there is a horizontal slot 28 with a circular cross section at right angles to the direction of movement of the cloth to be stitched, the lower part of said slot 28' opening to the bottom surface of the base 28 through an opening narrower than said slot 28'. In the slot 28' and said opening are slidably fitted right and left needle holders 29a and 29b of the form as shown in FIG. 10. Needles 20"a and 20"b are attached to the right and the left needle holders 29a and 291;, respectively, by means of setscrews 32a and 32b. Said needles 20"a and 20"b move up and down together with the needle-bar 27 and are caused to individually move linearly by the sliding motion of the needle holders 29a and 2%, respectively. Next, slots 30a and 30b are made in the upper portions of the needle holders 29a and 29b, respectively, at right angles to the direction of the sliding motion of the needle holders 29a and 2%. Under the extending portion 28" of the base 28, operating arms 31a and 31b are fitted to the slots 30a and 3012 through openings 28"a and 28"b respectively. The end portions of said operating arms 31'a and 31 h being fixed, respectively, to the lower ends of the zigzag controlling rods 31a and 31b inserted rotatably in axial holes bore through said extended portion 28" so as to cause linear sliding motion of the needle holders 29a and 2% by the rotating motion of the zigzag controlling rods 31a and 31b. The upper end of the needle-bar 27 and those of zigzag controlling rods 31a and 31b are connected to the main shaft of the sewing machine and the zigzag generating device respectively quite similarly as in the case of the previous embodiment.
As seen clearly from the foregoing, by use of the needlebar device with double needle action according to the present invention, even asymmetrical patterns can he stitched easily and efficiently without turning back the cloth and interrupting the motion of the needle, which is impossible in the use of a conventional needle-bar device where the right and the left needles oscillate symmetrically with respect to each other.
Although the above description was stated with respect to the preferred embodiments, it should be understood that many changes and modifications can be made Without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

1. In a sewing machine having a main shaft, a housing and a mechanism for providing fancy stitching, a needlebar device with double needle action comprising a needlebar operatively connected to the main shaft of the sewing machine for thereby being moved up and down, a flat plate being attached to the lower end of said needle-bar for movement therewith and having axial holes therethrough, a pair of needle holders each having an L-shape with a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, each of said needle holder horizontal portions having a groove therein, a pin pivotally supporting and connecting one end of the horizontal portion of each of said needle holders to and beneath said flat plate, a vertical needle carried by each of said needle holders, a pair of zigzag controlling rods individually and operatively connected to the sewing machine mechanism for providing-fancy stitching, an end portion of each of said zigzag controlling rods being rot'atably inserted through one of the axial holes in said fiat plate and including a horizontal shoulder portion, and one of said shoulder portions being received in the groove in the horizontal portion of one of said needle holders and the other of said shoulder portions being received in the groove in the horizontal portion of the other of said needle holders whereby an independent oscillating motion is imparted to each of said needle holders.
