No. 653,179 Claims. (Cl. 206-46) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is directed to a sleevelike paperboard wrapper for hosiery and the like which includes a bifunctional glue lap. The glue lap maintains the integrity of the wrapper tube after it is folded from a blank and additionally releasably holds the hosiery within the wrapper.

In the merchandising of hosiery and similar items of apparel, it has long been the practice to provide some type of packaging in the nature of wrappers, boxes, or envelopes therefor. The hosiery wrapper of the present invention provides a wrapper which provides ample space for bearing advertising, brand identification, price, size, etc., and with the hosiery, forms an attractive and durable package. As an important aspect of the invention, hosiery may be packaged securely with the utmost of ease. Moreover, the wrapper itself is simple to manufacture from paperboard or similar sheet material and is, therefore, very inexpensive.

In accordance with the invention, the new wrapper is in the form of a tube or sleeve which contains a new and improved manufacturers joint. Specifically, the overlying free edge portion of the blank from which the sleeve is formed, i.e., the glue lap which forms the manufacturers joint, carries a strip of special pressure sensitive adhesive, which cooperates with an underlying remote free edge portion of the blank having at least one discontinuity formed therein. Thus the adhesive, which is protected by a removable cover strip before package formation, completes the m-anufalcturers joint where it ongages underlying edge portions, =and will be exposed by the discontinuity to provide an article-engaging adhesive band.

In accordance with the principles of the invention, the new structure lends itself to simultaneous packaging and sleeve formation. That is to say, the sleeve may be erected from a blank directly around the hosiery or article to be packaged. When the overlying glue lap is adhered, by pressure, to the underlying sleeve portion, it will simultaneously releasably secure the hosiery to the wrapper, itself, through the adhesive band.

For a more complete understanding of the present invention, reference should be made to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to FIG. 1, a paperboard blank from which the new wrapper may be formed, includes a rectangular top panel 11 in which are hinged rectangular side wall panels 12, 13 along score lines 14, 15, respectively. A first bottom forming panel 16 having generally convergently tapered sides and a length less than the top panel 3,415,35 9 Patented Dec. 10, 1968 11 is articulated to the side Wall panel 12 along a score line 17 parallel with the score line 15. In [accordance with the inventive principles, the free edge .18 of the panel 16 has a portion removed to form an opening or discontinuity 19 therein. Advantageously, the edge is generally U- shaped, as shown. A second bottom forming panel 20, also having convergently tapered sides and a length less than the top panel 11, is articulated to the side wall panel 13 along a score line 21 parallel with the score line 14.

The free edge 22 of the panel 20 is a continuous glue lap and carries a coating strip of special pressure sensitive adhesive 23, which is adapted to form a firm bond with the free edge portions 18 and to form a readily releasable bond with a packaged textile article such as hosiery. The adhesive is covered before use by a waxed protective release tape 24 which is of slightly greater width than the adhesive strip 23.

Advantageously, the adhesive 23 and tape 24 may be applied to a press sheet in the area of the glue lap 22 before the blank is die cut to facilitate manufacture and to provide the protective tape with the identical profile of the panel 20. A particularly suitable adhesive and release tape for use in the present invention is commercially available under the trade designation Kleen-Stik Dubl-Stik from the corporation of the same name in Chicago, 111.

To form a wrapper 25 (FIGS. 2 and 3) from the blank 10, the contents to be packaged, for example, hosiery H, are placed upon the top panel 11. Thereafter, the side walls 1 2, 13 and bottom panels 16, 20 are folded up and about the hosiery into a tube or sleeve having a generally rectangular cross section. As shown in FIGS. 2 and 4, the panel 20 overliesthe panel 16, and the adhesive 23 forms a manufacturers joint, at 'a central axis of the wrapper, having a generally U-shaped configuration. Importantly, exposed bands 26 (FIG. 4) of adhesive 23 will be releasably bonded to the hosiery H simultaneously with the formation of the sleeve 25.

As will be appreciated, the new wrapper provides a simple and inexpensive means of identifying, protecting, advertising, and packaging hosiery and similar articles. Furthermore, it should be understood that the foregoing description of an illustrated embodiment of the invention has been exemplary only.

I claim:

1. A four-walled container for folded hosiery articles and the like, comprising (a) a tubular sleeve of rectangular cross section formed from a one-piece paperboard blank and including a top wall, first and second side walls articulated to said top wall and a base wall;

(b) said base wall including a first flap and a second flap articulated respectively to said first and second side walls;

(c) one of said flaps including an adhesive strip adjacent its free end edge;

((1) the other flap including at least one notch at its free end edge;

(e) first portions of said adhesive strip overlying said other flap and securing said one flap thereto;

(f) the remaining portions of said adhesive strip being exposed through said at least one notch to dispose an adhesive band at inner surfaces of said sleeve, said band being of substantial dimensions and sufiicient to secure said article to said sleeve.

2. The four-walled container of claim 1, in which (a) said notch is generally U-shaped.

3. The four-walled container of claim 1, in which (a) the side edges of said underlying flap are convergently tapered;

(b) said exposed adhesive portions define adhesive bands adjacent said edges.
