IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,502, dated October 15, 1861.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that- 1, WILLIAM H. TOWERS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Broom-Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making partof this specification.
The figure is aside elevation of the improved broom-handle with the broom-corn secured thereto. v
This invention although very simple, is nevertheless very useful in facilitating and strengthening the attachment of the hroomcorn to the broom-handle, and it consists in the formation of a series of circular grooves in the handle of such relative sizes and at such relative distances apart as shall correspond with the sizes and positions, respectively, of the series of surrounding layers of broom-corn and windings of wire around them.
For example, the lower groove 1 is formed in the handle A, opposite where the first series of windings of wire around the end of the first layer of broom-corn 60 takes place, and is made of sufficient capacity to enable the first groove 1. The next groove 3, which is somewhat smaller than the grooves 1 2, is formed opposite where the series of windings of wire which is to secure the end of the next layer (2 of broom-corn, which, like the first layer a, is equally distributed around the handle. The next groove 4, which is a slight degree still smaller, is formed opposite the windings of wire which secure the end of the next layer (Z of broom-corn, and the next groove 5 opposite the windings of wire which secure the end of the next and final layere of broom-corn. By such relative distances apart and sizesof the grooves l 2 3 l 5 their capacities and positions are made to correspond, respectively, with the sizes of the series of layers a b c (l c of broom-corn designed to be bound in them and the positions of the series of windingskof wire employed for that purpose, thus insuring-an extraordinary degree of firmness of attachment of the broomcorn to the handle with less wire than heretofore employed.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Forming a series of grooves around broomhandles of such relative sizes and distances apart as shall correspond with the hulk of the successive layers of broom-corn, and the positions of the respective series of windings of the wire binding the ends of the same in the ,grooves, substantially as described.
