A"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER WOMAOK, OF FALKS STORE, IDAHO TERRITORY.
PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,445, dated August 18, 1885.
Application filed Marlin 2s, rees. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern.'
Beit known that I, ALEXANDER VVOMAOK, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Falks Store, in the county of Ada and Territory Vof Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to detachable handles for picks; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, strong and durable, and one to which the pick may be easily attached and detached when desired or foundV necessary.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in thecornbination, with a handle having a head at its upper end, a longitudinal passage through said head, and a vertical passage communicating therewith, of a pick having a seat and a key or wedge toengage said seat. Y
The invention further consists in the"'in1- proved construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a pick constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a crosssection, showing the key for holding the parts in place. v y
In the accompanying drawings, in which like lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures, A represents the helve or handle, having the head B secured to one end thereof. This head B has inwardlyextendingplates O, which are formed integral with the head, and are provided with holes or openings for the passage of rivets, screws, or other suitable fastening for holding said head in place upon the end of the helve or handle, said plates inclosing the sides of the handle and being connected by plates a, thus forming a band, the end of said helve or handle resting in a seat, a, formed in the head B. The head Bis provided with a rectangular passage, b, which is arranged as shown, and is adapted to receive the pick. Communicating with this passage b is a passage or opening, f, Vformed in the head midway the ends of the same. v
C represents the pick, which is of the usual form. This pick is provided on its inner side at about its center with a rectangular seat or recess, c.
The pick is applied to the head by inserting one end of the pick through the longitudinal passage until the seat in the pick has arrived at a point so that it will register with the vertical passage or opening in the head. A wedge or key, D, is then passed through the slot f and engages the seat c in the pick, and thus prevents the movement of said pick in either direction.
If the pick becomes broken, or it is necessary to sharpen the same, the wedge or key is removed and the pick may be easily detached.
It will be seen from the above description that my improved handle is not only cheap and vsimple in its construction, but that it is strong and durable, and effective for the pur` l poses intended.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The handle A, in combination with the hollow head B, vprovided with longitudinal plates C, which are shaped to fit the handle, plates a3, connecting the ends of the plates O, the front end of the head being provided with an interior enlargement, forming a seat, a, for the end of the handle, a transverse slot or passage, f, provided at the front end of the head, so as to divide the latter into two parallel arms, a rectangular vertical passage, b, provided through both arms, the pick C, having its central portion attened or made rectangular to closely iit the passage b, a rectangular transverse seat or recess, c, provided in the pick, and a wedge or key passing through the seat c and slotf, and having its ends resting on the two arms of the head, as set forth.
2. The handle A, in combination with the 9 head B, provided with a seat, a, for the handle, a transverse slot or opening, f, provided at the front end of thehead, so as todivide the latter into two parallel arms, a rectangular vertical passage, b, provided through both ICO arms, the piek G, having its central portion In tesbinlonythatIelaim the foregoing as my flattened or made rectangular to fit the pasown I have hereto afixed my signature in pressage, a rectangular seat; or recess, c, provided ence of two W1 bnesses.
in the piek, and a Wedge or key, D, passing ALEXANDER TOM/XCR. 5 through the seat c and slot f, and having its Vitnesses:
ends resting on the two arms of the head, for SAMUEL R. MITCHELL,
the purpose set forth. CHARLIE H. Ross.
