Description

June 30, 1964 C. GOODMAN ETAL CORRECTIVE BED BOARD Filed Sept 20,
/7 INVENTORS CHARLES GOODMAN F G 3 LOUIS GREEN ATTORNEi there are no other alternatives.
United States Patent 3,138,806 CQRRECTIVE BED BOARD Charles Goodman, 240 Gallatin St, and Louis Green, 197 N. Main St, both of Providence, RI. Filed Sept. 20, 1962, Ser. N 0. 224,933 1 Claim. (Cl. -327) Our present invention relates tocorrective mattresses and more particularly to a corrective auxiliary board which can be used in combination with a standard mattress.
The principal object of the present invention is to pro vide a corrective board construction which will transform an ordinary mattress into a. corrective mattress.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a corrective board which can be used to renew old sagging mattresses.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a corrective board which can be used in combination with a standard box spring and mattress.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a corrective board which can be converted to a bed in and of itself.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a corrective board construction having the above advantages, which is simple in construction and easy and economical to manufacture and assemble.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view our invention consists of a novel arrange:- ment of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed descrip tion following in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and more particularly defined in the appended claim.
In the'drawings,
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a corrective'board embodying our invention.
FIG. 2 is a transverse section'takenon line 2-2 on FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of a conventional box spring and mattress utilizing the corrective board of the present invention.
After a period of some use most mattresses tend to sag or become lumpy or to take the shape of the person sleeping on them. After a while people may begin to suffer from backaches making it diificult to obtain a good nights rest. There are on the market so-called orthopedic mattresses which are equipped with additional stiffening to provide a very stiff support for the human form making it much more comfortable to sleep on. 1 However, these mattrmses are costly and the person needing the mattress would have to replace the old mattress. Another alternative is a bed board. This comprises a stiff large board which is placed between the box spring and the mattress to reduce the sagging effect of the mattress and to stiffen the mattress. Short of sleeping on the floor The present invention provides a stiffening board which can be madeeconomically and which can be placed on top of a conventional mattress to obtain all the effects of an expensive orthopedic mattress at a fraction of its cost. The board of the present invention also serves to correct all the lumps and curves and dents in an old mattress without the cost of replacing it.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, FIG. 1 illustrates applicants corrective board 10 which comprises a layer of wood 11 approximately /3 in thickness. The
Wood or board 11 is covered with a layer of foam material 12 which is illustrated as foam rubber but which can be foam plastic or foam urethane or even cotton batting or ordinary mattress filling material. It is contemplated that the thickness of the board 11 and the filler material 12 at the center 13 be approximately 3". However, the entire outer portion is covered with a suitable tight cover 14 forming an edge border 15 which reduces the thickness of the entire board to 2" at the borders.
The above construction provides a stiff large board, A3 in thickness, covered with a suitable soft padding which ranges from 1%" at the edges to approximately 2% in thickness in the center. This padding is sufiicient to make it comfortable to sleep on and yet stiff enough to correct any aches and pains caused by a bad back. Such a board can be made at a fraction of the cost of a corrective mattress, and can be used in various ways. First of all, as illustrated in dotted lines in FIG. 1, it can be supplied with legs 16 and turned into a bed in and of itself. Furthermore, as shown in FIG. 3, a standard frame 17 is provided with a box spring 18 and a conventional mattress 19. The mattress 19 can be old and lumpy and curved. However, the board 10 is laid on top of the mattress 19 and serves to straighten out the lumps and to stiffen the sleeping surface in the same manner as an expensive orthopedic mattress. Thus all the comfort. and usefulness of such a mattress can be obtained at a small cost.
The corrective board 10 can of course be made in any desired size. It can be made in double widths to cover a large double bed or it can be made in smaller widths to cover a single bed or even in sections to one half of a bed at a time so that one person can sleep with the board and one can sleep without it. This is due to the fact that the board is easy to handle and is not part of but only an addition to a conventional mattress and box spring. The device of the present invention is so light and easy to handle that it may even be possible to split the board across the center transversely and hinge the parts together so that it can be folded and put away if necessary. Other advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to a person skilled in the art.
We claim:
A stiffening board for a bed comprising a stiff rectangular wooden board approximately in thickness, a layer of foam plastic padding overlying said board, and a cover fabric surrounding said board and said plastic padding, said cover fabric being tightly drawn over said board and plastic to reduce the thickness of said board and plastic from approximately 3" at the center to approximately 2" at the edges, said board being of generally rectangular shape and approximately the same size as a conventional mattress.
