Description

Nov. 17, 1964 H. s. SCHMID CAPTIVE BALL PADDLE TOY Filed July 23, 1962 xrb l. kl
IN V EN TOR. f/E/vey 5 gchm ID United States Patent 3,157,400 CAPTIVE BALL lADDLE TGY Henry S. Sehrnid, 7000 W. Vienna Ave, Milwaukee 22, Wis. Filed July 23, 1962, Ser. No. 211,559 1 Claim. (Cl. 27397) This invention relates to improvements in captive ball toys, and more particularly to a novel captive ball toy of the pendulum type.
An object of the invention is to provide a paddle which may be manipulated with a pendulum movement to keep a captive ball in continuous movement.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of a captive ball toy embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the same.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary detail view showing the string mounting.
FIG. 4 is a horizontal cross-sectional view taken through the handle member.
FIG. 5 is a frontal edge view in elevation of the device showing the ball travel during play.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral refers to the device generally, which comprises a handle shank 11 provided with a pair of reinforcement strips 12 and 13 on either side thereof. A top bracket 14 is 30 provided with a laterally projecting member 15 provided with a circular groove in a vertical plane at 16 thereof, to receive the loop 17 on the upper end of the string 13. A resilient ball 19 is attached to the lower end of the string 18.
ice
At the lower end of the device integral with the handle shank ll is a substantially circular paddle portion 20. When the handle 11 is grasped by the operator, he may keep the ball in continuous movement by a sharp pendulum movement of the paddle 20. The paddle portion 20 is disposed laterally or" the handle shank 11 on the same side as the projecting swivel member 15 and on a plane with the axis of the latter.
It Will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A captive ball toy comprising a circular plate paddle portion, an integral handle tangentially disposed thereon, an integral bracket on the opposite end of said handle disposed on the same side as the paddle portion, a swivel element extending laterally of said bracket, a cord having one end looped engaging said swivel element, and a resilient ball secured to the free end of said cord, said cord being of a length to permit said ball to strike centrally of each face of said paddle when the handle is moved in pendulum swinging movement.
