BEDSPREAD Filed Oct. 16, 1961 INVENTORS BY CLYDE B. CLARK HAZEL M. RAGSDALE MAZERA A TTQKNEYS United States Patent 3,144,666 BEDSPREAD Hazel M. Ragsdale Mazera, Palm Desert, and Clyde B.
Clark, Los Angeles, Calif., assignors to M.C.D.C. Corporation, a corporation of California Filed Oct. 16, 1961, Ser. No. 145,330 2 Claims. (Cl. 5333) This invention relates generally to bedspreads and more particularly to an improved bedspread arrangement for combination box springs and mattresses. This application is a continuation-in-part of the co-pending patent application of Hazel Ragsdale, Serial No. 844,396, filed October 5, 1959, for Bedspread, now abandoned.
Conventional bedspreads as employed in motels and hotels are frequently subject to undue treatment such as occurs, for example, when luggage and the like is placed on top of the beds when occupants enter a room, or when soiling occurs due to spilling of drinks, dropping of ashes, and so forth. Even if the bedspread is not actually soiled, wrinkling of the same detracts from the overall appearance of the room. As a consequence, the bedspreads generally require continual straightening and frequent laundering, usually after each use.
With the foregoing in mind, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide an improved bedspread in which the spread itself is formed of liquid repellant material such as plastic for easy manual cleaning and which is suitably contoured to fit the bed in question, whereby laundering expense and the like are greatly reduced.
More particularly, it is an object to provide an improved bedspread arrangement particularly adaptable for commercial operations such as in motels and hotels, which is extremely long lasting and which is so constructed as to provide a substantially wrinkle-free appearance.
Briefly, these and other objects and advantages of this invention are attained by providing an under spread portion for positioning between the conventional box springs and mattress. This under spread portion is described in considerable detail in the above referred to co-pending application. Cooperating with the under spread portion is a cover spread of liquid repellant material, such as plastic, shaped to fit the bed and designed to complement the under spread.
This cover spread is also described in the referred to co-pending application. In accordance with the improved bedspread of the instant application, the cover spread is provided with novel elastic means for securing the same in place and yet not interfering with easy folding down of the spread preparatory to using the bed. The elastic portions of the cover spread constitute important features of the instant improvement in that they will prevent sliding of the plastic material of which the major portion of the spread is constructed. This sliding movement, characteristic of plastic material has been a problem heretofore, which problem has now been solved by the instant invention.
A better understanding of the invention will be had by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an exploded perspective view looking upwardly at the under side portions of the under spread and cover spread parts making up the bedspread of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view showing the under spread and cover spread in place about a box spring and mattress on a conventional bed; and,
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary cross section taken in the direction of the arrows 33 of FIGURE 2.
Referring first to FIGURE 1, the basic parts making up the improved bedspread of the present invention comprise an under spread 10 having a border 10' dimensioned to correspond to a conventional box spring (not shown in FIGURE 1). Above the under spread 10 is a cover spread 11 having a border 11' similarly dimensioned to correspond to the mattress. Also illustrated is a plastic pillow slip structure 12.
The under spread 10 is arranged to be positioned between the box spring and mattress. As shown, this under spread is provided with an elastic strip 13 having its upper edge secured to the inside of the border 10' about the entire perimeter thereof. The elastic strip 13 extends downwardly to engage the sides, foot, and head portions of the box spring.
The under spread also includes an under skirt including under skirt portions 14, 15, and 16 depending downwardly beyond the elastic strip 13. In the preferred construction, the under skirt depends from opposite sides of the border as shown at 14, and 16, and from the foot of the border as shown at 15 to cover the corresponding side and foot portions of the box springs. The head portion is open since a headboard will ordinarily eclipse the head end of the under spread.
Referring now to the cover spread 11, there is provided, as shown, a border skirt having portions 17, 18, and 19 arranged to partially overlap the underskirt portions 14, 15, and 16, respectively, when the spread is assembled on a box spring and mattress bed structure. Also included is an elastic band 20 secured between the front edge portions of the border skirts 19 and 17 at the head end of the spread as at 21 and 22. This elastic band 20 is arranged to engage the head end of the mattress over which the cover spread is positioned.
At the foot end of the cover spread 11, there is provided an elastic under band 23 secured to the inside intersecting portions 19 and 17 of the border skirt with the spread 11 adjacent the foot end thereof as at 24 and 25. This under band 23 is arranged to pass under the foot portion of the mattress.
The plastic pillow slip 12 includes a pocket 26 for receiving a pillow. By providing a separate cover for the pillow, the cover spread may remain flat over the entire area of the bed and thus always provide a neat appearance.
The assembled relationship will be clear by referring to FIGURE 2. As shown, there is provided a headboard 27 for a bed including a box spring structure 28 and mattress 29 shown in the cut-away portion. The elastic strip 13 of the under spread is shown surrounding the entire perimeter of the sides of the box springs 28 so that the under spread is securely held in position. Similarly, the under band 23 is shown passing under the foot portion of the mattress 29.
It will be noted in FIGURE 2 that the border skirt, for the cover spread 11, such as indicated at 17 and 18, depends downwardly a suflicient distance to overlap partially the underskirts 14 and 15, respectively. It will also be clear that the underskirts 14 and 15 in turn depend downwardly sufficiently to completely eclipse the elastic strip 13.
In the side view of FIGURE 3, the point at which the elastic strip 13 is secured to the intersection of the underskirt and the under spread portion at the inside of the border 10' is clearly shown.
With the foregoing construction, it will be evident that it is a simple matter to turn down the cover spread 11 by simply sliding the elastic band 20 from the head end of the mattress 29. The foot portion of the cover spread may remain in position, or if it is desired to remove the spread entirely, it may be easily removed since the foot 3 end of the bed is free of any similar structure corresponding to the headboard 27.
In placing the bedspread on the bed, the under spread is first positioned and will ordinarily remain in position on the box springs since it is shielded from most types of soilage or wrinkling. The cover spread in turn is readily positioned by first looping the under band 23 under the foot portion of the mattress and then positioning the elastic band 20 at the head end of the spread between the headboard 27 and the head end of the mattress. The dimensioning of the spreads themselves is such that they will be held in wrinkle-free relationship to the box springs and mattresses. Only the cover spread need be removed when the bed is to be used.
From the foregoing description, it will be evident that the present invention has provided a greatly improved bedspread which is repellant to liquids in view of its construction of plastic material, which is maintained in a substantially wrinkle-free condition as a consequence of the unique use of the elastic structures, and which will be long lasting and easy to turn down or make up as required.
Minor modifications that fall clearly within the scope and spirit of this invention will, of course, occur to those skilled in the art. The bedspread is therefore not to be thought of as limited to the exact construction set forth merely for illustrative purposes.
What is claimed is:
