HAlviE-TUG AND TRAGEQFASTENING.
SPBCIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,931, dated December 9, 1884.
Application filed May 2, 1884. (Xn model.)
.To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that we, Ci-rnrsrIAN C. Seawa- NER, of Vinterset, Madison county, Iowa, and HARRY S. BOLLINGER, of Chicago, Cool; county, Illinois, have invented an Improved Harness Hanie-Tug and Trace-Fastening, of which the following is a specification.
Our improvement relates tothe inanner of forming eyes in the hanie-tug, and a hook or buttoning device on the end of a trace adapted to be detachably inserted in the eyes, and the trace thereby adjustably connected with the llame-tug. j
Our invention consist-s in the construction and combination of a haine-tug having eyes and a contractible and expansible button and trace-fastening device, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a top view, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of a haine-tug having eyes and loops formed of one piece of nietal and one leather strap. Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. a a transverse section, of ahame-tug formed oftwo overlapping metal pieces'and a leather covering on the lower piece. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the end of Fig. 3, showing a locking device for detachably connecting the two overlapping metal pieces without rivets orscrews. Fig. 6 is a top view showing a trace detachably and adj ustably connected with a harnetug having a cockeye haine-clip flexibly connected with its front end. Fig. 7 is a perspective view, and Fig. S a vertical longitudinal section, of a clip having a hook and buttoning device adapted to fasten the end of a trace tothe harnetug having eyes.
Jointly considered these figures clearlyilillustrate the construction and operation of our complete invention.
A and B are metal plates fastened together in a manner similar to th at shown in the United States Letters Patent No. 286,230, issued October 9, 1883. The base-plate A has a series of perfor-ations or eyes, l 23, in the line of its center, and annular flanges C onv the upper side of each eye, Vas clearly shown in Fig. 4. The upper plate, B, has flanges on its edges and under side and flanged perl'orations in its center corresponding in size and number with the series of eyes l 2 3 and their annular flanges C in the plate A, that are designed to project through the plate B.
Dis ahook formed on the rear end and center ofthe top plate, B, to project through a oorresponding opening in the end of the plate A, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, for the purpose ot' locking the two plates together and dispensing with a screw.
F is a loop formed on the rear end of the plate A.
G (shown in Figs. l and 3) is a loop formed on the front end of the plate A for 'the purposes of producing a long and jointed hainetug, as represented by Fig. 3.
H represents a cockeye-clip hinged to the end of a hanietu g adapted for aslip--tug harness.
J is a leather covering drawn over the baseplate A and fastened by means of stitches or in any suitable way, and then covered and its raw edges concealed by means ofthe top plate, B, -in such a manner that the anges on the under side and edges of the top plate will press upon the leather and form a tight joint and finished appearance.
To connect the top plate with the leather covered base-plate we simply slip the hook D through an opening in the base A and under the base of the loop F, and then lay it upon the covered base-plate A in such a manner that the annular flanges C will project upward through the corresponding flanges in the plate B. By then inserting a single screw, K, in Jthe overlapping front ends of the two metal plates the llame-tug is completed and ready for use.
L represents a clip adapted to be :fixed to the end ofa trace by means of rivets in a common way.
M is a hook extending at right anglesfroln the front end and under side of the clip. It is semicircular and has an open chamber, N, adapted to receive a latch, and a spring to operate the latch.
l? is a latch pivoted in the hook. Its lower end has a flange, It, corresponding with a similar flange on the lower end of the hook M, anda round head, S, at its top, that projects above the front of the clip. V
T is a wire spring ixed to the pivot V, that IOO connects the latch with the hook in such a oagei manner that it Will, in its normal condition, hold the lower end of the latch away from the hook to increase the circumference of their llanges, which serve as a button in the eyes of the hame-tu g to keep the trace connected with the haine-tug.
Annular shoulders formed in the lower edges of the eyes or llanges G engage the flanges R of the latch and hook and allow the leather to remain flat against the plate A.
Figs. 1, 2 show a modified forni of our hametug, in which the plate Bis provided with laterally-projecting perforated ears at its ends and opposite',r sides, adapting it to be riveted upon a leather strap that will yield, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the buttoning device on the end of thetrace is inserted in one ofthe series of eyes 1 2 3, as required, to adj ustably connect a trace with a haine-tug.
We claim as our invention-'- 1. In ahaine-tug, the combination ofa nieta plate, A, having a series of perforations, l 2 3, and annular flanges C, extending vertically from said perforations, a metal plate, B, having flanges extending downward on its edges,
and perforations adapted to admit and engage the anges G, and a leather covering extend- 'ing over the under side of the plate A and under the edges of the plate B, as and for the purposes stated.
3. The combination of the clip L, hook My N, the latch l? R S, and a spring, V, substantially as shown and described, for the purposes specified.
4. The improved haine-tug and trace-coupling, composed of the solid plate A, having Vperforations and annular flanges C, a plate,
B, having a series of perforations adapted to admit the flanges Con the plate A', and a hook, D, adapted to enter an opening in the end of the plate A, a leather covering onvthe plate A, having its edges covered by the plate B, p
a loop at the rear end, and a loop or clip at the front end, of the combined plates A and B anda clip having an expansible. hook adapted to enter and engage the annular flanges C, fixed to the front end of a trace, as and for the purposes stated.
