Brooks 2/ BY WWW m -f ATTORNEY United States This invention relates to new and useful improvements in stands or holders for supporting garbage cans, or the like, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a stand or holder of the character herein described which may be conveniently and effectively employed to support a garbage can without any danger of it being knocked over by dogs, wind, et cetera.

The stand or holder in accordance with the invention also embodies means for anchoring the usual lid of the can so that it cannot be blown away by wind, yet is readily removable from the can to permit placing of garbage in the latter.

Another important feature of the invention resides in the provision of hook means for supporting the can lid after its removal from the can, so that both hands are free for placing garbage in the can and the necessity of holding the lid with one hand is avoided.

The can itself may be easily placed in the holder and removed therefrom for purposes of emptying, the lid anchoring means being such that the lid may be removed together with the can and retained on the can until such time as the latter is emptied and returned to the holder.

Other advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, neat appearance, in its durability, and in its adaptability to convenient and economical manufacture.

With the foregoing more important object and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention will be understood from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like parts, and wherein:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a garbage can holder in accordance with the invention, also showing one can in position therein; and

FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view on a reduced scale, showing a holder for only one can, as distinguished from the two can holder of FIGURE 1.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, more particularly to FIGURE 1 thereof, the garbage can holder in accordance with the invention is designated generally by the reference numeral and is adapted to accommodate two garbage cans in juxtaposed relation, one of such cans being illustrated at 11.

The holder 10 embodies in its construction an upright supporting post or standard 12, the lower end of which is embedded in the ground while its upper end is provided with a suitable cap 13.

Two frame assemblies 14 are secured to and disposed at opposite sides of the lower end portion of the post 12 for supporting the cans 11, and since these frame assemblies are identical in construction, a description of one will suifice for both.

Each frame assembly 14 comprises a horizontally disposed, circular ring 15 which is secured at one point along its circumference to the post 12, as for example by welding. A plurality of

16, 17 are disposed below the ring 15, one end of the bar 16 also being secured, as by welding, to the post 12, while its other end is provided with an upturned arm 18. The

16, 17 are horizontally co-planar, extend diametrically with respect to the ring 15 and cross each other at an intersection point 19, substantially at the center of the ring, although as already noted, the bars are spaced downwardly from the ring itself. The ends of the bar 17 are also proatent vided with upturned arms 20, and the upper ends of the

18, 20 are secured, either by welding or by suitable fastener elements, to circumferentially spaced points on the ring 15. For purposes of reinforcement, a diagonal brace 21 extends from the outer end of the arm 16 to the post 12, as shown.

16, 17. These bars support the can bottom in spaced relation from the ground and the ring 15 effectively prevents the can from being knocked over.

A pair of laterally projecting hooks 22 are secured to the post 12 adjacent the cap 13, each hook being adapted to removably receive a link at one end of a length of chain 23, as indicated at 23a. The other end of the chain is suitably secured, as at 23b, to the usual handle 24 of the can lid 25. The chain thus prevents the lid from being blown away by wind if for any reason it should be dislodged from the top of the can, but the lid may be removed together with the can from the holder by simply sliding the chain link 23a off the hook 22.

When the lid 25 is removed for insertion of garbage into the can, it may be suspended by its handle 24 from the book 22, so that both hands are left free and the necessity of holding the lid with one hand is eliminated.

The embodiment of the invention shown in FIGURE 2 is constructed in the same manner as that shown in FIG- URE l, but only one frame assembly 14, one hook 22 and one chain 23 are provided on the post 12 to accommodate only one garbage can, as will be clearly apparent.

While in the foregoing there have been described and shown the preferred embodiments of the invention, various modifications may become apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. Accordingly, it is not desired to limit the invention to this disclosure and various modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is:

1. In a garbage can holder, the combination of an upright supporting post, a can holding frame secured to and disposed at one side of the lower end portion of said post, said frame comprising a first horizontal bar secured at one end thereof to said post, a vertical arm extending upwardly from the other end of said first horizontal bar, a horizontally disposed circular ring secured at one side thereof to said post and having its diametrically opposite side secured to the upper end of said vertical arm, a second horizontal bar extending at right angles to said first horizontal bar, said first and second horizontal bars crossing and being secured to each other at a point substantially below the center of said ring, a pair of vertical arms provided at and extending upwardly from the ends of said second horizontal bar, the upper ends of said pair of arms being secured to said ring, and means provided at the upper end of said post for anchoring a can lid thereto.

2. The device as defined in claim 1 wherein said means comprise a laterally projecting hook secured to the upper end portion of said post, and a length of chain connected at one end thereof to said hook, the other end of said chain being adapted to be secured to the handle of a can lid and the lid being supportable on said hook by its handle when removed from the can.

Claims

1. IN A GARBAGE CAN HOLDER, THE COMBINATION OF AN UPRIGHT SUPPORTING POST, A CAN HOLDING FRAME SECURED TO AND DISPOSED AT ONE SIDE OF THE LOWER END PORTION OF SAID POST, SAID FRAME COMPRISING A FIRST HORIZONTAL BAR SECURED AT ONE END THEREOF TO SAID POST, A VERTICAL ARM EXTENDING UPWARDLY FROM THE OTHER END OF SAID FIRST HORIZONTAL BAR, A HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED CIRCULAR RING SECURED AT ONE SIDE THEREOF TO SAID POST AND HAVING ITS DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSITE SIDE SECURED TO THE UPPER END OF SAID VERTICAL ARM, A SECOND HORIZONTAL BAR EXTENDING AT RIGHT ANGLES TO SAID FIRST HORIZONTAL BAR, SAID FIRST AND SECOND HORIZONTAL BARS CROSSING AND BEING SECURED TO EACH OTHER AT A POINT SUBSTAN-
