Description

Jan. 1, 1963 E. v. SLEPICKAY HEAD APPAREL WITH coounc MEANS Filed May 18, 1960 INVENIOR. Evzlyn \(Slzpmko.
3,070,803 Fatented Jan. 1, 1963 Free 3,070,863 HEAD APPAREL WITH CQQLING MEANS Evelyn V. Slepicka, Rte. 1, Box 867, West Chicago, Ill. Filed May 18, I960, Ser. No. 29,887 it Ciaim. (Cl. 2-7) The present invention relates generally to head apparel, such as hats, caps, and the like, and in part1cular to head apparel having cooling means.
An object of the present invention 1s to provide head apparel having cooling means formed integrally therewith, such apparel being designed to afford the wearer thereof with optimum comfort yet not bemg conspicuous in appearance.
Another object is to provide, in a hat or cap, cooling means readily and with facility replenished when the cooling effect has been spent.
A further object is to provide a novel and un1que form of head-gear suitable for individuals who are employed outdoors and normally are subjected to the suns radiant heat.
A still further object is to provide head-gear having therein a reservoir for liquid so that an emergency supply of water or liquid food is readily available to an individual whose activities may take him afield and remote from any water supply.
These and other objects will be fully understood upon consideration of the following description .and in view of the attached drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of a hat, constructed according to the present invention,
FIGURE 2 is a view taken on line 22 of FIGURE 1, on an enlarged scale,
FIGURE 3 is a view of a cap,
FIGURE 4 is a view taken on line 4-4 of FIGURE 3, on an enlarged scale,
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view of another form of the hat of FIGURES 1 and 2,
FIGURE 6 is a sectional view of another modified form of the invention,
FIGURE 7 is a sectional View of yet another hat, and
FIGURE 8 is a. sectional view of a still further modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, in FIGURES 1 and 2, the numeral 10 designates a hat generally, the hat I0 having a crown I2 and a flexible brim 14 extending about the perimeter of the crown 12 and formed integrally therewith. The brim 14 is dependingly supported from the crown 12.
A flexible water impervious bag 16 is positioned within the crown I2 and is supported by its perimeter from the crown 12.
The bag 16 is provided with a filler opening 18 closed by a removable closure member 20. A liner element 22 extends about the inner face of the crown 12 below the bag 16 and has an upperflange 24 joining the peripheral part of the bag 16. A sweat-band 26 extends about the crown 12 adjacent the brim 14, as shown most clearly in FIGURE 2.
In FIGURES 3 and 4, a cap 39 is shown, constructed much along the same lines as the hat 10. The cap 30 has a crown 32 and an eye shade type partial brim 34.
Within the upper part of the crown 32 and spaced therefrom, to form an air cell or space, is a bag 36 having a filler neck 38 closed at the upper end by a removable plug or closure member 40.
The free open end of the neck 38 is contiguous to the outer surface of the crown 32, The bag 36 is supported by its periphery from the crown 32.
With reference to FIGURE 5, another hat 50 is shown in which the crown 52 and brim 54 are of two layers of material and the space between, constituting a conduit means, is filled with cooling liquid, as at 56. In this form of the invention, the crown 52 and brim 54 form a bag having a filler opening 58 closed by a plug, cap, or the like, constituting a closure member 60.
An air cell or space 62 above the water filled bag part of the crown 52 has an access opening provided by overlapping parts of upwardly extending portions 62 and 64 of the crown 52. The overlapping parts of the crown portions 62 and 64 are detachably secured together by suitable fastening elements 68. The elements 68 may be snap fasteners or the like.
In the form of the invention shown in FIGURE 6, the hat 70 is similar to thehat 50 but the air space 72 is formed by a flap 74 which fastens to the crown 76 on one side of the latter. Another fastening element 78 is employed to detachably secure the flap 74 over the water filled crown.
In the hat 80, shown in FIGURE 7, the bag 82 is detachably secured to the crown 84 on one side of the latter. The bag 82 has a filler opening closed by a closure member 86. A fastening element 88 secures the bag 82 to the crown 84.
In FIGURE 8, 90 represents a hat having a large opening 92 in the bag 94. A plug element 96 is removably positioned in the opening 92. The plug element 96 is fabricated of sponge or other water pervious material so that it permits evaporation at a slow rate of the water filling the bag 94, thus cooling the air about the head of the wearer. A flap 98 extends over the bag 94 to provide an air cell or space, as in the previously described forms of the. invention shown in FIGURES 1 to 7, inclusive.
It is also a feature of the invention that the water filled brim cools the forehead and face of the person wearing the hat.
In each form of the invention shown it is contemplated that the bag for the cooling liquid may be formed of water impervious material such as clear or colored plastic, flexible or rigid. The hat or cap may be of felt, cloth, straw or any other material in fashion or suitable for the activities of the individual wearing the head covering apparel constructed according to the present inventions. The hat or cap and the bag may be formed integrally or formed separately.
The invention contemplates the use of any size opening for the bag employed, and a closure member fabricated of material of any nature found practical or commercially feasible. I
It is also intended that the invention cover any suitable liquid for filling the respective bags. Such liquids may be water cooled to any degree found desirable. Ice may be included also. The liquid may be also a mixture of materials if found practical. Liquid food such as iced tea or other beverages may be included among the liquids to be covered by the present invention.
It is intended that the invention also extend to the principle of using warm or hot fluids as well as cold, such fluids to include beverages and foods. In the use thereof, the head covering in any of its forms above described may be filled with any liquid hot or cold and for any purpose within the teaching of the claim.
Also, the invention contemplates that any means, mechanical, chemical or otherwise, to cool or heat a hat or cap or other head apparel is to be embraced by the scope of the invention and that numerous changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit thereof as defined by the following claim herewith annexed.
What is claimed is:
A head apparel with cooling means of the character described embodying a crown and a brim at right angle thereto, the said crown and brim being of double wall liquid proof construction having a space therebetween in which is placed coolant liquid through a capped filler opening centrally located in the uppermost outer wall of the said crown and a second capped filler opening in the said brim and an upwardly extending member having its lower edge turned horizontally inward and secured to the said crown, the upper portion of the upwardly extending member also being turned horizontally inwardly and having two overlapping edges removably secured together the said upwardly extending member forming an air space between the upper surface of the said crown and the under surface of the uppermost horizontal portion of the said upwardly extending member.
