Description

Oct. 30, 1962 G. CLARE 3,061,151
SCREW TYPE POURER Filed Dec- 25, 1960 INVENTOR. George Clare ATTORNEY United tates Patent 3,061,151 SCREW TYPE POURER George Clare, Maplewood, N.J., assignor to Clarernould Plastics Company, Newark, N.J., a corporation Filed Dec. 23, 1960, Ser. No. 77,935 Claims. (Cl. 222478) This invention relates to a pourer and more specifically to a screw cap type pourer adapted to be screwed onto the threaded neck of a bottle to facilitate the dispensing of its liquid contents.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved pourer constructed and arranged so as to be rotatably secured in fluid tight relationship in the neck of a bottle.
Another object is to provide a relatively simple fluid tight swivel connection between the pourer and a stopper fitted onto the stern of the pourer whereby the pourer is rendered readily rotatable relative to the stopper.
Other features and advantages will be apparent when considered in view of the drawings in which:
'FIG. 1 is a side elevation view shown partly in sec tion of an improved screw cap pourer in accordance with this invention.
FIG. 2 is an end view of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged view of the pourer stem illustrating a detail of construction in accordance with this invention.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail illustrating the improved pourer construction.
FIG. 5 is a side view of the stopper of this invention illustrating another detail of construction.
FIG. 6 is a top view of FIG. 5.
Referring to the drawing, FIG. 1 illustrates the improved pourer 10 which forms the subject of this invention. As shown the pourer 10 comprises preferably a rectangular shaped hollow head portion 11 having a spigot 12 integrally formed in one end thereof and a vent opening 13 formed in the opposite end. If desired a cover 14 may be pivotally connected over the opening of the spigot 12 which is adapted to be self-opening when the bottle 15 in which the pourer 10 is fitted is tilted to dispense its liquid content.
Connected to the bottom of the head 11 is a hollow stem 16 which is adapted to extend into the externally threaded neck 15A of the bottle and through which the liquid content is permitted to flow to the spigot 12. As shown, partition walls 17, 18 extend between the side walls of the head to define therebetween a liquid passagew-ay 19, with partition 17 extending downwardly into the stem 16 so as to define a vent passageway 20 in communication with the vent opening 13. As shown the vent in passage 20 extends below the inlet 19A to the liquid passageway 19.
As shown in FIG. 2, the head 11 is preferably formed of two half sections 11A, 11B from a suitable material, such as plastic, and which are secured together by a suitable adhesive. The rectangular shape of the head provides space upon which suitable display material (not shown) may be imprinted thereon, e.g. trademark, brand name, or the like.
In accordance with this invention a thread cap 21 provided with an opening 22 through its top is loosely fitted about the stem 16 and a stopper 23 is disposed about the stem 16 to maintain the cap 21 thereon. Preferably the stopper 23 is formed of polypropylene, nylon, or the like.
In the illustrated embodiment the stopper 23 is provided with a flange 23A at its upper end, which when inserted in the neck of the bottle is adapted to rest on the top of the bottle as seen in FIG. 1 and FIG. 4. The body 23B of the stopper depending below the flange 23A tapers inwardly. As shown, the stopper 23 is provided with a bore 24 which snugly receives the stem 16. Thus as shown in FIGS. 1 and 4, the pourer 10 is secured to the bottle 15 by the insertion of the stopper 23 and stem 16 fitted thereto into the neck of the bottle, after which the thread cap 21 is threaded onto the neck so that it wedges the flange 23A into fluid-tight relationship with the top of the neck 15A.
In order to render the pourer 10 rotatable relative to the stopper 23 fixed within the neck of the bottle, means are provided to form a fluid-tight swivel connection between the pourer head 11 and stem 16, and the stopper 23. As shown the swivel means include a cooperating groove and ridge. In the illustrated form the stem 16 is provided with an annular projecting ridge 25 which is adapted to be received in an annular groove 26 formed in the stopper 23. Because of the nature of the stopper material, the ridge 25 and groove 26 permits relative rotation between the stopper 23 and the stem 16, while at the same time forms a fluid-tight connection. therebetween. Thus no leakage or evaporation is likely.
With the construction described, the display material imprinted on the pourer (not shown) can be readily aligned with the label of its respective bottle, without effecting the removal of the threaded cap 21.
While the instant invention has been disclosed with reference to a particular embodiment thereof, it is to be appreciated that the invention is not to be taken as limited to all of the details thereof as modifications and variations thereof may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A screw type pourer, adapted to screw onto the threaded neck of a bottle containing a liquid content comprising a rectangul-arly shaped hollow head portion having a spigot integrally formed on one end thereof and a vent opening formed in the other end thereof, a hollow stern dependingly connected to the bottom of said head portion, means partitioning said stem and connected head to form a fluid passageway communicating with said spigot and vent passageway, a stopper having a bore therein and a flange about the upper end thereof adapted to be received in the neck of a bottle up to the flange thereof, and a screw cap loosely fitted on said stern between sai-d stopper and said head partition for securely attaching the stopper thereof to the bottle, and means for swivelly connecting said head and connected stern relative to said stopper whereby said head can be rotated independently of said threaded cap, said latter means including an annular ridge c-ircumscribing said stern and a cooperating annular groove formed in the bore of said stopper adapted to receive said ridge.
2. The invention as described in claim 1 wherein said stopper is formed of polypropylene.
3. The invention as defined in claim 2 wherein said stopper is frusto-conical.
4. A screw type pourer adapted to screw onto the threaded neck of a bottle for dispensing its liquid content comprising a pouring head having a spigot and a vent opening, a stern receivable in the neck of the bottle connected to said pouring head, a screw-cap having an opening through which said stem is adapted to extend, a stopper having a flange, said stopper being adapted to be fitted into the neck of said bottle up to said flange, said screw cap being adapted to secure the stopper to the neck of the bottle, and said stem and stopper having cooperating means to render said head and connected stem rotatable relative to said stopper and in fluid-tight relationship therewith.
5. The invention as defined in claim 4 wherein said stem is provided with an annular ridge and said stopper is provided with an annular groove adapted to receive said ridge whereby said stopper and pourer are rotatable relative to one another and in fluid-tight relationship.
