July 3, 1962 L. QUlNlO, SR
CUTTING COMBS Filed Nov. 18, 1960 INVENTOR. 0% J4,
United States Patent 3,041,721 CUTTING CQMBS Louis Quinio, Sin, 532 Second Ave, Tarentum, Fa. Filed Nov. 18, 1960, Ser. No. 70,153 1 Claim. (Cl. 3li30) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in barber combs, more particularly to composite comb and cutting implements for training and styling hair, and it is among the objects thereof to provide a comb structure in which a double comb or a pair of combs are arranged in superposed relation with a cutting blade disposed therebetween with the teeth of the combs in alignment with one another and the cutting element being adjustable relative to the edge of the teeth.
The invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan View, partially cut away, of a composite comb and cutting device embodying the principles of this invention;
FIGURE 2, a cross section partially in elevation, taken along the line 22 of FIGURE 1; and,
FIGURE 3, a vertical section taken along the line line 33 of FIGURE 1.
With reference to the several figures of the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the handle portion of a comb having a substantially elliptical body 2 with teeth 2a extending substantially halfway through the width of the body of the comb, a second comb element 3 being superposed upon the comb 2 and secured thereto by threaded screws and nuts 4 and 5, respectively. The screws 4 extend centrally from the body 2 for mounting comb 3. The drill holes of the upper comb portion 3 are spaced so that teeth 6 of the comb 3 are in register with the teeth 2a of the comb 2, leaving the spaces '7 between the teeth extending across the edges of the parallel combs.
Disposed between the comb elements l and 3 is a cutting blade 8. In its longitudinal movement it is confined by the screw elements 4. It is looked in position by clamping action of the movable comb element 3 and the nuts on screws 4 so that the cutting edge ltl can be spaced any desired distance from the edge of the teeth 2a and 6.
As shown in FIGURE 2, the cutting blade 8 has double knife edges 10 and 11 and it may be removed from between the combs and turned 180 to change the cutting edges in relation to the teeth of the combs.
The ends of the cutting element 8 are recessed, as shown at 12, FIGURE 1, to form shoulders 13 for limiting the transverse movement of the cutting blade. The ends 12a of the comb elements are rounded to act as end guards so that there is no possibility of the sharp edges of the cutting blade being exposed at the ends of the comb.
A function of the above-described hair styling and trimming tool is as follows:
The operator adjusts the blade within the limits of the shoulder 13 with the edge 10 a desired distance from the end of the teeth of the comb to get the desired trimming of the ends of the strands of hair and by having the teeth 6 and 2a of the comb in register, the hair strands freely pass between the teeth against the cutting edge and are neatly severed.
By simply loosening the knurled nuts 5 and adjusting the blade 8 in relation to the ends of the comb teeth, the operator can change the cutting action as it .rnay be required to cut oil more or less of the ends of the hair strands for difierent portions of the head in accordance with the particular requirements.
The body of the comb is of sufficiently greater area than the width of the cutting blade to protect the operator from any part of the blade since none of it is exposed except between the spaces of the teeth of the comb; also by virtue of the recesses 12, the blade cannot accidentally release from its supports between the combs, and because of the predetermined spacing of the shoulders 13, the cutting member cannot be adjusted to be exposed beyond the ends of the teeth of the comb.
It is evident from the foregoing description of this disclosure that a composite comb and cutting element, as therein described, provides a simple, safe and expedient means for styling and trimming hair.
Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
I claim:
A composite comb and cutting implement for styling hair comprising a fiat substantially elliptical shaped body portion having teeth along one edge for combing hair and having a handle extending thereon, a removable comb element having teeth corresponding to the teeth of said elliptical shaped body and a cutting blade disposed between said body and removable comb element, said elliptical shaped body having threaded pins extending centrally thereon for receiving thumb nuts and said removable comb element having drill holes spaced to receive the threaded pins and to maintain the teeth in alignment with the elliptical shaped body portion and said cutting blade having recessed ends with rounded shoulders for abutting said threaded pins but being movable therebetween to adjust the blade edge relative to the ends of the comb teeth within the limits of the spacing of the shoulders in the blade to prevent the cutting edge of the blade from extending to and beyond the end of said teeth.
