It will be understood that the following description of the construction and the method of operation, fitting and utilization of the folded rigid cigarette package fitted with lifting insert is intended as explanatory of the invention and not restrictive thereof.; f
r In the drawings, the same reference numerals designate the same: parts throughout" the various views, except otherwise indicated.
One embodiment of the package shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 hasthe same form, contourand cross-section as the conventional typefof soft paper cigarette package. The package is used for a-total of twenty cigarettes located vertically within the package, so that they can be withdrawn through the top thereof, the cigarettes being located in three rows, including two rows having seven cigarettes each, and a central row which is staggered relative to the front and rear rows and therefore has only sixcigarettes, although this arrangement may be varied to suit the requirements of a particular package.
The package is formed of an inner wrapper 15 of tin foil or a similar material, the upper and lower ends of the tin foil adjacent thetop and bottom of the cigarettes being folded to form the longitudinal and side upper and lower flaps as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 and hereinafter described in greater detail. I
Theouter wrapper 17, which is formed of relatively thin rigid paper and fitted around the tin foil inner wrapper, is shown in Fig. 1 and in its developed form in Fig. 2.
The outer wrapper consists of a front and a rear panel 19 and 20 of rectangular contour, the height of the front and rear panels being substantiallyequal to the height of; the cigaretttes in the package, with the width thereof equal to the width of a rowof seven cigarettes, and a pair of side panels. 21 and 22, integral with and located between the front. and rear panels. An additionalaux iliary rear panel 23, which is folded inside the rear.
*flaps' being foldedalongthe score line 27 at the bottom of the panels, to form the lower portion of thecompleted package which encloses in Fig. 1. r .1 r g A narrowsideflap 281-is formed integral with one of the side panels 21,1eft-hand, Fig. 2, the side flap being either of rectangular contourof: a width slightly less than the width of the side 'panel"2l,-or it maybe of substanthe tin foil wrapper as shown tially trapezoidal form, as shown in Fig. 2, the sides-30 of the side'flap being sloped inward slightly from the point i ,of 'engagement lwith the side panel. Theside flap 28 is folded inward t me the tinfoil inner wrapper,- under r the front and rear panels to form they bottom of the package as shown in Fig. 1.
The abutting surface of the bottom, front and rear longitudinal flaps 25 and 26 may be glued to oneanother, or attached to one another by other suitable means to form the lower end of the completed package.
As shown in Fig. 2, the upper end of the front and rear panels has a plurality of longitudinal and side flaps formed integral therewith, the depth of the flaps from the point at which they fold away from the respective panels being substantially equal to, .or somewhat less than the cross width of the package, or the distance across the three staggered rows of cigarettes located within the package, as shown in Fig. 1. I
' The upper end of the front panel 19 has a relatively short longitudinal front flap. 32 integral therewith, one side. of the longitudinal flap 32 being cut away for reasons hereinafter described in greater detail.
The. upper end or" the left-hand side panel 21 has an upper side flap 33 integral therewith, the side flap being of trapezoidal contour, substantially the same as the lower side flap. 28, the width of the flap at the junction with the side panel being equal to or slightly less than the width of the .side panel 21, the width of the outer end of the flap being reduced in the same manner as that of the lower side flap 28. I
. A portion of the upper end of the auxiliary rear panel is cut out 35, as shown in Figs. land 2, to form a hinged opening fiap 36, which is integral with and of substan tially the same width as that of the left-hand section 37, Fig l, of the rear flap, which is integral with the narrow Vertical section 33 of the auxiliary rear panel 23 located adjacent the cut out 35 and forms the top of the closed package.
A score line 39 is formed between the hinged opening flap 36 and the left-hand section 37, Fig. l, of the longitudinal rear flap, the score line forming a hinge point when the opening flap 36 is elevated into the opening left-hand portion, Fig. l, of the longitudinal rear flap,
to enable the opening flap to be folded into the closed position shown in Fig. l, with the two folded sections located between the front and rear panels 19 and 20 of the outer package wrapper and the adjacent panels of the tin foil wrapper. The outer edge of each of the folded sections 40 and 43a of the hinged opening flap is of arcuate contour, the length of each of the folded sections being narrowed from a length substantially equal to the distance between the. side wall of the package and the hinged score line 39, to a point in substantial alignment with the outer edge of the hinged opening flap from the folded sections at the outer end of the opening flap. The length of the end 42 of each folded section, which is located adjacent the slit at the junction between the folded section 40, 40a and the left-hand section, Fig. l, of the rear flap 37, is substantially equal to the distance between the score line 39 separating the hinged flap from the left-hand section, Fig. l, of the upper rear flap, 37, to limit the angular movement of the hinged flap 36 when it is opened to the open position shown by dot-dash lines, Fig. l, the extremity of the long end of the folded sections 40, 40a; engaging the inner surface of the adjacentside panel 22. of t packa e outer wrappe o arres he mo em n of the hinged opening flap 36 when it reaches the open ve a pos t n s own-by ot-d sh nes. g- 1. V
e The tin an inner-wrapp r h ch is p d. a d the cigarettes, inside the relatively rigid outer wrapper, informed by wrapping. a sheet .of tinfoil around the i6 cigarettes, to form a front and a rear panel, located ads jace'nt the front and rear rows of cigarettes -.orthe insert walls, and a pair of side panels located adjacent the end lines of cigarettes in the package, or the adjacent insert side wall, the panels extending upward beyond the upper edge of the cigarettes and downward below the lower edge thereof, to enable the extending portions of the tin foil wrapper to be folded into a pair of longitudinal front and rear upper and lower flaps, one of which overlaps the other, and a pair of upper and lower side flaps lo cated adjacent the side panels, which are folded under the front and rear tin foil flaps at the top and bottom of the package.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4, a-slot 44, 45, is cut through each of the upper longitudinal front and rear upper tin foil flaps, the slot 44, 45 being located under the hinge line of the hinged opening flap 36, thus sepa ate ing each of the longitudinal front and rear upper flaps into a long left-hand sect- ion 46, 47, which is located at the top of the left-hand side of the package, one section ofone flap overlapping the mating section of the opposite flap, and a relatively short right- hand section 48, 49
which is readily detachable in a manner hereinafter described in greater detail, to facilitate removal of the righthand end lines of cigarettes from'the package.
In the package shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a thin fairly rigid paper insert is inserted into the package between the cigarettes and the tin foil inner wrapper, the insert serving as a stop to limit the upward movement of the lifting element fitted to the package.
The insert comprises a front and a rear wall 50 of rectangular contour, the height of the front and rear walls being substantially equal to the height of the cigarettes in the package, the width thereof being sub? stantially equal to the width of theadjacent front and rear walls 52 of the tin foil inner wrapper fitted to the package, the front and rear walls of the insert being connected by a side wall 53, as shown at the right-hand side, Fig. 1, which is integral with the front and rear walls and substantially perpendicular thereto, the side wall being located between the mating side wall of the tin foil inner wrapper and the right-hand end line of ciga, rettes. The upper edge of the side wall is substantially in line with that of the front and rear walls of the insert. The left-hand edges of the front and rear wallsof the insert have a gap therebetween which is substantially equal in width to the cross width of the three rows of cigarettes in the package, staggered in the usual manner, in order to firmly grip the cigarettes within the package.
In order to provide clearance for the lifting element,
which is inserted into the package in the position shown in Fig. 1, adjacent the right-hand side wall of the tin foil inner wrapper, a portion of the lower part of the front and rear walls 50 and the corresponding lower portion of the side wall 53 of the insert are cut out, as shown in Fig. 1, to provide a stopfor limiting the upward movement of the lifting element.
The lower edge 54 of the side wall of the insert which is located approximately at the midpoint between the upper and lower edges of the front and rear wall thereof,
forms the top of the cut-out, this edge which is .in sub,
stantially horizontal alignment with the upper edge 55 of the cut-out through the front and rear walls of the insert serving as a .stop to limit the upwardmovement of the lifting element. The left-hand end of the line 55 forming the upper edge of the cut-out-in the front andrear walls of the insert is connected with the bottom edge of each of these walls by a sloping line 56 which forms the left-hand side of the cut-out. 1
The lifting element located adjacent the right-hand side of the package shown inFig. 1, is similar insorne respects to that shown in Fig.l 12-. The lifting element consis s of a horizontal base which is locatedunder the two rig to the vertical section not the 'liftingele'ment and. the base thereof, as well as a pair of outer tabs 62, which are integral withithe side tabs 60, the outer tabs being glued or otherwise attached to the outer surface of the vertical section 61 of the lifting element, which is mounted inside the right-hand side panel of the tinfoil inner wrapper, the base and the side tabs forming a lifting channel which is utilized as a means for lifting two or more endlines of cigarettes to a point at which they can readily be gripped-by the user to facilitate removal from the package. a
- As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the upper end of the vertical section of the lifting element has a liftingtab 63 integral with the extreme upper end thereof, and anintermediate tab 64, located between the lifting tab 63 and the vertical section 61 of the lifting element, the two lifting tabs 63 and 64 being bent into substantially'the position shown in Figs. 3 and- 4 when the package is closed. 7 a
The intermediate tab 64 is-located under the right- hand sections 48 and 49 of the front and rear longitudinal-tin foil flaps, with the lifting tab 63 folded into a position in which it abuts and partially covers the right- hand sections 48 and 49 of the longitudinal upper tin foil flaps. Thus after the hinged opening flap 36 of the outer wrapper is lifted into the open position shown by dot-dash lines, Fig. 1, the operator may grip the upper or lifting tab 63 of the lifting element, thus causing the intermediate tab to engage and sever the right-hand sections 48,.49 of the upper longitudinal tin foil flaps, thereby severing and removing the tin foil flap sections 48 and 49 and exposing the end lines of cigarettes located under the opening flap. l V
After the upper edge of the end lines of cigarettes is exposed, theoperator may elevate the two end lines 58 and 59 of cigarettes to a point at which they may readily begrasped by the user for removal from the package, the
lifting element being lifted until the upper portion of the end lines of cigarettes is exposed and readily available for removal from the package, or the lifting element may be elevated until the upper edge-of the side tabs 60 of the lifting element engage the stop lines 54 and 55 of the insert shown in Fig. l, and hereinbefore described, thereby limiting the upward movement of the end lines of cigarettes supported by the bottomchannel section of the lifting element. l
The two right- hand end lines 58, 59 of cigarettes may thus be lifted by lifting the upper liftingtab 63 of the lifting element, thereby-lifting the intermediate'tab 64 located under the short right- hand sections 48 and 49 of the longitudinal front and rear tin foil flaps, thereby tearingthe right-hand end sections of the longitudinal front and rear tin foil flaps, exposing the two or more end lines 58 and 59 of cigarettes, after which the lifting element is continuously raised until theupper edge of the base, side tabs 60 and 62 engages the upper edge 54 l the lower section .thereof, thereby exposing thehingedopening flap 36 of the outer wrapper, and enabling the user to lift it to the open position shown by dot-dash lines, Fig.1, substantially perpendicular to the upper longitudinal flap 37 .of the outer wrapper.
Thenumber of end lines of cigarettes lifted by the lifting channel would be determined by the requirements of a'particular package. .In the package shown in Fig. 1, two end lines 58 and 59 are lifted by the liftingelement, although thismay be varied by increasing or decreasing the projecting distance between the outer edge of the base section or lifting channel of the lifting element and the inner edge of the vertical section 61 thereof. T After the end lines of cigarettes are removed from the package, 'tlie cigarettes remaining in the package may progressively be elevated in substantially the same manner, by tapping the cigarettes over toward the right-hand edgeof the package, thereby enablingthe lifting element to'ibe progressively elevated, twolor more cross-lines of cigarettes being raised to a level corresponding to the point reached by the ,lifting element when the bottom side tabs 60 and 62 thereof engage the lower'edge of the front,-rea r and side walls of the insert shown inFig. 1, at the top of the cut out therethrough.
T he'lifting clement while shown attheright-hand side of the package in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, may be located with equal facilityat the left-hand side of the package, the construction of the package and the lifting element thereof being substantially the same as those shownin Figs.
' 1, 3 and 4, except for the reversal 'of the position of the lifting element relative to the package, and the corresponding repositioning of the hinged opening flap located at' the top of the outer wrapper.
Figs. 5 and 6 show a modification of the cigarette package shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4.' 7'
- The inner tin coil wrapper is substantially the same as that shown in Fig; 1 and hereinbefore described, except that the right-hand sections of the upper longitudinal tin foil flaps located under the hinged opening flap 36 at the top are cut out, along withthe adjacent upper side flap of the tinfoil inner wrapper.
A separate removable tin foil section 70 such as that shown in Figs. 5 and 6, would be provided to cover the rearpanels 72 and 72a respectively, are folded over the and 55 of the cut-out in thefront and rear walls of the insert and the side wall thereof, and in that manner limit to that shown in Fig. 7, the two longitudinal cellophane,
front and rear flaps 67, 67a and the side flaps 68 thereof completely-covering the upper left-hand rear longitudinal flap37 of the outer rigid paper wrapper and the' hinged opening flap 36 hingedly attached thereto, as shown in Fig. 2, after the hinged opening flap is folded over into the closedposition' shown in Figjl, the hinged opening flap covering the lifting tabs ,63, 64 of the lifting element; and the adjacent right-hand sections 48 and -49'of the longitudinal frontand rear tin foil flaps, the tear strip' 69 connecting the upper and lower sections of the cello phane sealing wrapper enablingthe user to readily dea top of the end lines of cigarettes as shown in Fig 5, one
of the longitudinal front and rear flaps 74,7411 overlapping the other. The extended upper portion of the side panel 73 and the adjacentprojecting portionsof the end of the front and rear flaps are bent over to form a side flap 75 of trapezoidal contour, the width of the outer portion of the side flap being substantially equal to the width of the side panel 73, the left-hand edge 76 ofthe side flap, which is located adjacent the hinged joint of the hinged opening flap 36, being reduced in width, to form a narrow lip, which facilitates gripping the side flap in order to remove the entire removable tin foil section 70 from the-position shown in Fig. 5', in order to expose the end lines of cigarettes, and the upper lifting tab 77 of the lifting element, when the hinged opening flap 36 is elevated to the open position shown in Fig; 5, substantiallyperpendicular to the upper longitudinal rear flap 32 of the outer rigid wrapper.
The outer wrapper of the package shown in Fig. 5 is substantially the same as that shown in 'Figs. 1 and 2 Y 9 The longitudinal rear fiap 37 integral'with the auxiliary rear panel of the outer wrapper, which for-ms a portion of the top wall of the package, is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 1. The hinged opening flap 36 hingedly attached to and integral with the longitudinal rear flap 37 is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 1, the hinged opening flap 36 assuming the position shown in Fig. 5, substantially perpendicular to the top Wall of the outer wrapper when it is opened to permit removal of the removable tin foil section 70.
The front and rear panels 72 and 72a of the removable tin foil section 70 are located between the longitudinal front and rear rows of cigarettes, and the front and rear sections 40, 40a of the hinged opening flap 36, when the hinged flap is located in the closed position shown in Fig. 1, the front and rear panels of the outer wrapper remaining in engagement with the lower portion of the front and rear sections 40 and 40a of the hinged opening flap, when the hinged opening flap is elevated to the open position shown in Fig. 5. i In another modification of the construction shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, the outer package or wrapper, made of thin substantially rigid paper, is substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and hereinbefore described.
The tin foil inner wrapper is similar to that shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, except that the longitudinal frontand rear tin foil flaps at the top of the package are divided into two sections, the left- hand sections 80 and 81 which are substantially the same as those shown in Figs. land 4 and hereinbefore described, and the right- hand sections 82, 83 located between the hinged joint 39 of the hinged opening flap 36 and the righthand side wall of the inner wrapper, which are perforated along the front and rear longitudinal edges 84, 85 and the cross-line 86a thereof, which isv located in substantial alignment with the hinge line 39 of the hinged opening flap 36.
The side flap which is located adjacent the right-hand edge of the inner tin foil wrapper is folded into a flap 87 of substantially trapezoidal contour as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the side flap 87 being located above and engaging the upp r face of the hinged opening flap 36 when it is in the closed position shown in Figs. 1 and 7.
The outer sealing wrapper formed of cellophane, or other transparent plastic material, is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 1 and hereinbefore described.
The upper end of the sealing wrapper comprises a pair of longitudinal front and rear flaps 88, 8811, one of which is located above and overlaps the other and is attached thereto, and a pair of side flaps 89, which are substantially the same as those shown in Fig. 1. The narrow tear strip 69 connecting the two sections of the cello! phane outer wrapper is substantially the same as that employed in the conventional type of soft paper package, thus completely separating the upper cellophane sec tion 90, which is readily removable from the lower section, which remains fitted to the package.
In the construction shown in Fig. 7, the front and rear longitudinal cellophane flaps 88, 88a and, the right-hand side flap 89 thereof are glued, or otherwise attached. to the substantially trapezoidal side flap 87 of the tin foil inner wrapper.
Thus when the tear strip 69 of the cellophane outer wrapper is removed from the cellophane wrapper, thus completely severing the upper section 90 from the lower section thereof, the upper section 90 removes with it the right-hand side flap 87 of the tin foil upper flaps to which it is glued, the right-hand side flap being readily detached from the balance of the tin foil inner wrapper along the Wide perforated edge 86 of the side flap. When the tin foil side flap 87 is raised by raising the separated upper section of the cellophane outer wrapper, the side flab 8.7 a s h it h o r -h n iQl1L3 of the upper longitudinal tin foil flaps which are per forated and therefore readily detachable along the lon g i tudinal edges 84 and 85 thereof, and the cross-edges 86, 86b: thereof which are perforated, thereby completely removing the perforated right-hand section of the flaps of the tin foil inner wrapper, which remains attached to the cellophane section upper flaps 88, 88a, 89 in the manner shown in Fig. 8. i
When the right-hand sections 82 and83 of the longis tudinal flaps of the tin foil inner wrapper are raised by the cellophane upper section 90, they partially elevate the hinged opening flap 36, which may be elevated to the opening position, shown in Figs. 1 and 5, thereby exposing the upper lifting tab 77 of the lifting element and the exposed upper edge of the end lines 58, 59 of'ci'g} arettes located under the hinged opening flap, after the perforated detachable tin foil'flap sections 82, 83, and 87 are removed. The upper lifting tab 77 of the liftingelement which in this construction is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 5 and is located in the same positiOn relative to the rigid paper outer wrapper.
Fig. 10 is a vertical section through the right-hand side .of the package construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8, This drawing shows the relation between the right-hand side flap 87 0f the tin foil inner wrapper, which overlaps the right-hand edge of the hinged opening fiap 36. The front and rear longitudinal cellophane flaps 88, 88a which cover the topof the package are shown glued to the righthand tin foil side flap 787, thus enabling the right-hand tin foil section shown in Fig. 8, to be removed when the upper section 90 of the cellophane outer wrapper is removed from the package. The junction between the left and right-hand longitudinal tinfoil flaps is shown perforated to facilitate removal of'the right-hand tin foil flapsections in the'manner shown in Figs. 7 and 8. i Fig 11 shows another modification of the cigarette package shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the package being pro.- vided with a modified type of lifting element as shown in detail in Fig. 12. e
The lower or lifting portion of the lifting element shown in Figs. 11 and 12, is essentially the same as that 7 shown in Fig. 1. The lifting element shown in Figs. 11 and 12' comprises a vertical section 91 which is located adjacent the right-hand side wall of the package, between right-hand end line 58 of the cigarettes and the right-hand. tinfoil side wall, and a horizontal base 92 integral with cular to the base, the outer tabs 94, 94a integral with the ends of the end tabs being folded into a position in which they abut the outer surface of the vertical section 91 of the lifting element to which they are glued, or otherwise attached, to form a lifting channel to lift the end lines 58, 59 of cigarettes in the same manner as the lifting element shown in Fig. 1.
In place of the lifting tab at the top of the vertical section 91 of the lifting element, the lower portion of the vertical section, between the outer tabs 94 and 94a, has'a'parallel-sided semi-oval shaped cut out 95a there'- through', the material cut out being bent upward into a position substantially perpendicular to the vertical section 91 of the lifting element to form a lifting tab 95 as shown in Fig. 12, which is used as a means of elevating the lifting element in place of the upper lifting tab of the lifting element shown in Fig. 9.
" A vertical slot 96 of rectangular form, the width of the slot being slightly, greater than the width of the lifting tab 95 of the lifting element, is cut through the hand side wall 97 of the rigidpaper outer wrapper of the package, the horizontal upper edge 98 of the slot bein o hea ed 2 m abl i to se a a top: to
limit the upward movement of the lifting'tab 9513f the I lifting element, when the lifting element is elevated to Y side wall 97 of the outer wrapper when the cellophane sealing wrapper is wrapped around it.
The lifting element, while shown at the right-hand side of the package in Figs. 1, and 7 may be located with equal facility at the left-hand side of the package, the constructionof the package and the lifting element thereof being substantially the same as those shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 7, except for the reversal of the position of the lifting element relative to the package, the reversal of the relative position of the insert fitted to the interior 'of the package to limit the upward movement of the lifting element, and the reversal of the position of the hinged I opening flap 36, which would be moved to the left-hand side of the package from the position shown inFigs. 1, 2, 5 and 7. r i
. The construction of the upper longitudinal flaps, of the tin foil inner wrapper shown in Figs. 1,- and 3, as well as the removable tin foil section shown in Figs. 5 and 6, or the detachable tin foil longitudinal front and rear and the side flaps shown in Figs. 7 and 8,;would be located with equal facility at the left-hand side of the package, where the lifting element is located adjacent the left-handside wall of the package wrapper, f' It will apparent .to those skilled in theartthat my present inventionis not limited to the specific detailsde- "12 stantially perpendicular to the hinged operiingifiap, one of'said folded. sections being located adjacent the inner surface of the'mating front and rear longitudinal panels of the outer wrapper when the package is closed, each of said folded sections. having an integral extension'projecting beyond the hinged junction between the hinged opening flap and the longitudinal flap integral therewith, directed toward the longitudinal flap, the extension, of each of said folded. sections being adapted to remainin engagement with the'adjacent surface of the mating longitudinal panel of the outer wrapper when the hinged opening flap is angularly displaced to a position substantially per-. pendicular to the longitudinal flap to which it is hinged, the perpendicular distance between the inner surface of the hinged opjeningflap and the extreme edge of "each folded section being slightly less than the distance between the hingedjunction of the hinged opening flap and the adjacent side panel 'of'the outer wrapper. the opening flap being operative to uncover a portion of top of the package when it is angularly elevated about the to which it is hinged.
