1 Claim. (Cl. -443) The present invention relates to sleeping bags and the like, and more particularly to a novel and improved sleeping bag adapted especially for, although not necessarily limited to, indoor use. V 7

One aspect of the invention is directed to the provision of an improved sleeping bag combination, comprising a comforter, sheet and blanket arranged in a novel manner and adapted to provide a sleeping bag of improved utility and appearance. In accordance with the invention, the outer or cover element of the combination comprises a comforter, which is light in weight, easily handled and of pleasing outward appearance. The comforter is pro vided with improved arrangements for fastening a blanket section and sheet thereon, and may be folded over and zipped together along its edges to form a complete sleeping bag; and, when desired, the comforter may. be used alone, as an ordinary cover or auxiliary blanket, for example. One of the more specific aspects of the invention resides in the provision of a sleeping bag combination'comprising a folded comforter as an outer cover, a blanket section removably secured to the inside upper face of the comforter, and a sanitary sheet secured to and covering the entire inside face of the comforter. Whenever desirable or expedient, the blanket section may be removed from the combination, and the sheet, as wel1'.as the blanket section, is readily removable or detachablefrom the cover for cleaning, or where it is desired to use the cover alone.

Another specific aspect of the invention resides in the provision, in a sleeping bag oombination of the general type above described, of improved means for fastening the sheet and/or blanket section to the cover whereby excessive local strains upon the various components or elements are avoided. In this respect, the invention incorporates conveniently located elastic fastening elements, which provide sufficient resiliency to avoid or substantially minimize the possibility of damaging the various components during use of the sleeping bag. j, g

A further specific feature of the invention resides in the provision, for use in asleeping bag combination of Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken along line 3--3 of Fig. 1;

Referring now to the drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates generally an outer cover member of the combination which, in the illustrated form of the invention, is of substantially rectangular form, having a longitudinal center line 11. Advantageously, the cover 10 may be constructed substantially like a conventional comforter. Thus as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the cover may comprise inner and outer layers 12, 13 of material, between which is a suitable filler 14 and, in the preferred form of the invention, the outer face of the cover, defined by the outer material layer 13, is provided with a suitable decorative design.

Along the opposite side edges 15, 16 of the cover 10, and also along one end edge 17 thereof, is a zipper 18. The zipper begins at the center of the end edge 17 and extends outwardly to and then along the opposite side edges 15, 16. Accordingly, when the cover 10 is folded along its center line 11, the zipper 18 may be closed to forma bag. As shown in Fig. 2, the zipper 18 is secured to the inside face 12 of the cover a short distance inside therespective edges 15-17. The arrangement is such that the zipper is normally not visible from the outer face of the flattened'cover. i

' In accordance with one aspect of the invention, "a

plurality of elastic fastening elements 19 are securedto the inner face 12 of the cover along the side and end edges 15-17 and also along the center line 11. In the, illustrated combination, the fastening elements 19 are in the form of short strips of elastic material secured at their ends to thecover and disposed in generally parallel relation to the adjacent side edges thereof or to the center line thereof, as. the case may be. As shown best in Fig. 2, the elastic fastening elements 19 disposed along the cover edges 15-17 are located inside the area bounded by the zipper 18, so that the fastening elements are inside the bag when the zipper is closed, and are not visible from the outer face of the flattened cover. In the, illustrated form of the sleeping bag combination, the center line 11 divides the cover 10 into two sections 20, 21 of equal size and of substantially rectangular form. The cover section 20 may be considered the upper the type described above, of an improved sanitary sheet which is of greater length thanthe cover and-.h as'a s plit end portion forming a pair of flap-like sections. 'The arrangement is such that, in the complete combination, one of the flap-like sections may be turned over the top of the cover, while the other section extends out beyond the cover and may be tucked between or under cushions upon which the bag is supported.

The above and other advantageous features of the invention may be better understood upon reference to the following detailed description and accompanying drawings, in which:

section in that, for the purpose of thepresent description, it will be assumed that this section will be uppermost when the cover is folded to form a bag. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a blanket section22 having a shape and size corresponding generally to, that of the upper cover section 20, is secured to the inner face of thejupper cover section. Actually, the dimensions of the blanket section 22, are somewhat less than those of the cover section 20, so that when the blanketsection is placed upon the inner face of the cover section 20, the

' edges of theblanket section lie within the area bounded by the fastening elements 19 disposed along edges 15, 17 and center line 11.

Advantageously, the blanket section is provided along its opposite edges and along one end edge, which may be considered its bottom edge, with outwardly extending fastening tapes 23 located at points corresponding to the locations of the elastic fastening elements 19. Accordingly, as shown best in Fig. 5,-the tapes 23 may be tied or otherwise secured to the fastening elements 19, so that the blanket section 22 is properly held in place against the inner face of the upper cover section 20.

Disposed over substantially the entire inner face of the cover 10 is a sanitary sheet 24 which is substantially rectangular in form and has a center line aligned with the center line 11 of the cover. As shown in Fig. 2, the sheet 24 is of slightly less width than the cover 10, so as to lie within the area of the cover face 12 bounded by the fastening elements 19 along the edges thereof. Also, in accordance with an important aspect of the invention, the sheet 24 has a portion 25 projecting outwardly beyond one end of'the cover which may be considered the top end. The projecting portion of the sheet is split longitudinally substantially along the center line of the sheet, from the top end of the sheet to or perhaps slightly beyond the top edge of the cover 10, to form separate flaps 26, 27.

Secured to the side and bottom end edges of the sheet 24 are fastening tapes 28, which are located at points corresponding to the location of the fastening elements 1.9 and which extend outwardly from the edges of the sheet a distance of a few inches. Similar fastening tapes 29 are secured to one face of the sheet which may be considered the internal face, substantially along the center line of the sheet and at spaced points corresponding to the locations of the fastening elements 19 along the center line 11 of the cover.

The sheet 24 is secured to the cover 10 by tying or otherwise securing the several fastening tapes 28, 29, along the edges and center line of the sheet, to the various elastic fastening elements 19 of the cover. Accordingly, when the cover is folded, to form the bag, the opposite edges of the upper and lower sheet sections will be secured to the cover, substantially as shown in Fig. 3.

In the complete sleeping bag combination of the invention, the blanket section 22 is first secured in place to the inner face of the upper cover section 20. The sheet 24 is then secured in place over the top of the blanket section, and the bag is folded along the center line 11 and closed by the zipper 18. The various fastening elements 19 and tapes 23, 28, 29, being located within the area bounded by the zipper 18 do not interfere with the closing thereof. When the bag is readied for use, the flap 27 on the upper sheet section is folded over the outer face of the upper cover section, substantially as shown in Fig. 1. The flap section 26 may be extended out beyond the top end of the bag to cover the surface or support on which the bag is placed; or, if desired, the flap 26 may be tucked between or under cushions to assist in holding the bag in place.

The use of the elastic fastening elements 19, in the manner described herein, is of substantial importance in that, when the bag is in use, excessive local strains on the sheet and blanket section are avoided or substantially minimized. The useful life of the various components of the sleeping bag combination is thereby substantially increased. In this respect, it will be understood that, in appropriate cases, the various fastening tapes 23, 28, 29 may be formedof elastic material, in which case the fastening elements 19 may or may not be of elastic material as may be deemed expedient.

As may be readily understood, the blanket section 22 may be removed or eliminated from the combination whenever desired and, in this respect, it will be noted that the blanket section may be removed without completely removing the sheet 24.

Another important feature of the invention resides in the fact that the cover 10, being constructed substantially like a conventional comforter and having a pleasing outward appearance, may be used alone as a cover or auxiliary blanket. To this end, the zipper 18 and fastening elements 19 are located on the inner face of the cover, and are not visible from the outer face when the cover is in open or flattened form.

It should be understood that the specific form of the new sleeping bag combination, and the components thereof illustrated herein, is intended to be representative only, as certain changes may be made therein without departing from the clear teachings of the invention. Moreover, the invention is not to be considered as limited to the sleeping bag combination as such, but resides as well in certain of the individual components thereof.

I claim:

A sleeping bag combination comprising a flat cover formed by a comforter or the like of rectangular shape and having a longitudinal centerline dividing the cover into sections, said cover being adapted to be folded along said centerline to form upper and lower sections, said cover having inner and outer faces, zipper means disposed on the inner face of said cover along the side edges and at one end edge thereof, said Zipper means being disposed slightly inside said edges and being thereby concealed from view from the outer face of said cover, said zipper means being engageable to form the cover into a bag, a flat blanket section corresponding generally in shape to the upper one of the sections of said cover and not substantially larger than said upper section, said blanket section being secured to the inner face of said upper cover section, and a sani-tary sheet having a body portion corresponding generally in size and shape to the entire cover and being secured to the inner face of said cover, said sheet being adapted to be folded along its centerline with said cover, said blanket section'lying between said one cover section and said sheet, said sheet being of greater length than said cover and having a portion projecting beyond one end of the cover, said projecting portion being split longitudinally to form flaps, one of the flaps being adapted to be turned over the outer face of said cover, and the other of the flaps being adapted to extend beyond the end of the cover, said cover having fastening loops of elastic material along its side edges and along said centerline, the side edges of said blanket section being secured to fastening loops along one side edge and along said centerline, and said sheet being secured along its side edges to fastening loops along the side edges of said cover and along its centerline to fastening loops along the centerline of said cover.
