United States Patent BAG Michael A. Votolato, Providence, R. I. Application December 23, 1955, Serial No. 555,623 2 Claims. (Cl. 229-53) My present invention relates to paper bags, and more particularly to a novel construction of bag having a flared folding top.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a paper bag having a flared top portion which forms a Wide mouth.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a bag which is readily adaptable as a disposable garbage bag.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a bag having a folding top and suitable for bagging dry materials.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a bag having a folded conical top that is simple in construction and easy and economical to manufacture and assemble.

With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, my invention consists of a novel arrangernent of parts, more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more particularly defined in the appended claims.

In many communities trash and garbage is bagged and tied by the householder for collection. Trash or garbage receptaclesare provided into which a paper bag is placed and removed and tied when full. These bags are a problem to keep properly against the side of the receptacle, a problem to fill, and a problem to properly tie. In addition, certain dry items such as potatoes, seeds, fertilizer, etc. are bagged in paper bags and the tops usually stapled or sewed. The present invention is designed to provide a paper bag suitable for either garbage disposal or the bagging of products. It eliminates many of the disadvantages of the conventional bag normally used for these purposes.

The present invention essentially comprises a bag having a frusto-conical inverted top which flares outwardly making it simple and easy to fill. Furthermore, the top is designed to fold into a sealed position easy to tie or seal. For the purposes of the present invention, the top can be made integrally with the bag body or may be made separately and attached to the bag body.

Referring more in detail to the drawings illustrating my invention, the bag 10 shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is of the conventional butcher bag type having a front and back 11 and sides 12 which can be telescoped inwardly to collapse the bag to a flat position. The bag 10 is provided with a top 13 which flares outwardly in a hexagonal shape as shown in Fig. 4.

The top 13 is formed from a blank shown in Fig. 6,

the dotted lines indicating the folds. The panel 14 forms the front of the top and the similar panel 15 forms the back. The triangular panels 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 form one side, and similar panels 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 form the other side. The top 13 opens into an outwardly flaring shape as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In closing the bag, the sides fold inwardly as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 and the top edge is folded over, as at 26, to seal the bag. While in this position, an opening 27 is punched through the fold 26 and a string may be used to tie the bag shut. It will be noted that the inwardly folded sides are also caught by the string and opening 27 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7.

The above described construction thus shows a bag having an easy filling flared top that can be quickly collapsed and sealed shut. It can easily be used for garbage or for bagging materials. When the bag is used for bagging materials, it can be mounted as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. A rectangular container 28 is provided with a flange 29 extending around the bottom edge. The container is also provided with a hexagonal flared top 30. Two or more tangs 31 are struck up from adjacent the upper edge of the top 30 to pierce and hold the bag 32 in the container. The tangs 31 extend upwardly and the weight of the bag is downwardly. After filling, the user places his feet on the flange 29 on opposite sides of the container, straddling the container. He can then grasp the upper edge of the bag 32 and pull upwardly to slide the bag out of the container, the bag easily slipping off of the tangs 31.

The above construction can be used as a trash basket, or the container can be used for the convenient bagging of produce or other items. In either case the flared top makes filling easy and the top easily folds to sealed position. Other advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to a person skilled in the art.

I claim:

1. A bag comprising a body portion closed at the bottom end and open at the top, and an auxiliary top portion extending from the top edge of said body portion, said auxiliary top portion flaring outwardly to provide a bag opening larger than said body portion opening, said auxiliary top portion being creased along predetermined lines to fold said top portion into front and rear rectangular portions and triangular side portions extending between said rectangular portions, the top edges of said rectangular portions folding over to seal the bag.

2. A bag comprising a body portion closed at the bottom end and open at the top end, said body portion comprising an integral one-piece member having a main body portion with vertical sides and an auxiliary top por tion flaring outwardly to provide a top opening wider than said main body portion, said auxiliary top portion being creased along predetermined lines to fold said top portion into front and rear rectangular portions and triangular side portions extending between said rectangular portions, the top edges of said rectangular portions folding over to seal the bag.
