JAMES s/PEIRoNNEr, or wrIEAToN, ILLINOIS.
NUT-LOCKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,275, dated August 14,1883.
Application filed June 14, 1883.
I which the following 'is a specification, reference being hadtherein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for locking nuts on bolts. and is I more especially adapted to use on railways.
This invention has for its object to provide a cheap and simple means for locking nuts on fish-plates of railroad-rails, which object is accomplished by the device shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of the nut-locking device complete, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view of a pair of rails and fish-plates, showing the-locking device applied.
Similar letters of reference in the drawings indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A indicates the locking device, which consists of a rectangular elongated plate provided on its inner side with a solid central or openings 0.
rectangular bearing portion, a, and oppositelyextending spring-arms b, which are provided near their outer ends with elongated slots This plate and bearingportion is designed to be made integral, and in operation the central bearing will engage theouter face of the fish-plate, and the slots in the spring-ai ms pass over the threaded ends of the bolts.
(No model.)
Thus as the nuts are applied the springarms will be forced downward or inward, which will firmly press against the under side of the nuts and prevent the same from turning.
I am aware that aspringplate provided with a, central bearing is not new, some of which have arms extending in opposite directions,
and provided at their outer endswith lugs or bearing-projections to engage afish-plate or. railroad-rail, and also that a bent or bowed plate, having near its ends lugs or projections to engage bolt-nuts, has been used, and therefore do not claim such, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a
device for locking nuts on railroad-rails, con- I sisting of the metallic plate A,.provided on its inner side with the solid centrahbearing portion, a, and oppositely-extending spring-arms b, having elongated slots or openings 0, and free at their outer ends, without lugs or projections, all made integral, and the arms adapted, when in operation, to engage but the inner lower sides of the bolt-nuts, substantially as and for the purposes specified. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
