assiguor to Daimler-Benz Aktieugesellschaft, Stuttgart-Unterturkheim, Germany Application July 23, 1954, Serial No. 445,353 Claims priority, application Germany July 25, 1953 17 Claims. (Cl. 123-140) My invention relates to a governing system for a fuel feed device of an internal combustion engine and is particularly applicable to a fuel-injecting device of an engine in which gasoline is injected into an air charge for subsequent compression and ignition by a spark plug.
Engines of that type require that the ratio of mixture between air and gasoline be kept within very narrow limits. It is a prerequisite for a compliance with this requirement that the quantity of fuel injected for each reciprocation of the piston be proportional to the weight of the air charge sucked into the cylinder by the piston, such weight depending on both the atmospheric pressure and the temperature of the atmosphere.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a governing system for a fuel feed device of an internal combustion engine in which the quantity of the fuel fed per cylinder charge is controlled so as to secure the most favorable ratio of mixture, such control depending on the pressure and the temperature of the atmosphere.
More particularly, it is an object of the invention to provide a governing system for a fuel-injecting device in which the quantity of the fuel injected is subject to a primary control in dependence on the volume of the cylinder charge and to a secondary control in dependence on the temperature and the pressure of the air.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved governing system for the purpose indicated which complies in a superior manner with the theoretical and practical requirements in which the secondary control depending on the pressure and temperature of the air charge will have a greater influence when the injecting device is set for injection of a larger quantity of fuel,
and will have a smaller influence when the injecting device is set to inject a small quantity of fuel.
Further objects of my invention will appear from a detailed description of a number of preferred embodiments of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that such detailed description serves the purpose of illustration of the invention rather than that of restricting the same.

bodiment of the invention, the diaphragm chamber being 7 shown on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 5 is a side view of the control system shown in I nalled in a stationary bracket 29 and having one armcounected by a rod 30 to the pressure gauge 25, and- Fig. 4 partly in section along the line V-V;
Fig. 6 is a view similarto that of Figs. 1 and 4 of a any time being determined by position of a control member 12 in the form of a horizontal rod movable in lengthwise direction. The intake manifold 13 of the engine is connected by a pipe 14 to a diaphragm chamber 15 mounted in stationary relationship to the engine 10 and closed by a diaphragm 16. The quantity of the air charges sucked by. the reciprocating pistons into the cylinders of engine '10 is controlled by the orthodox throttle valve 17'adjustable by an accelerator pedal or the like. The vacuum produced in the intake manifold 13 when the throttle valve 17 is more or less closed is transferred by the pipe 14 to the diaphragm chamber 15. Therefore, the diaphragm 16 will at any time assume a position representative of the vacuum and, consequently, of the weight of the air charges. In the position shown,
the throttle 17 is partly closed. The diaphragm 16 is subjected to the pressure of a spring 18 inserted between the bottom of chamber 15 and a member 19 fixed to the central portion of the diaphragm. When the throttle 17 isfurther opened the pressure prevailing in the intake manifold 13 and in the diaphragm chamber 15 will rise a moving the diaphragm 16 in the direction of the arrow 20. When the throttle 17 is closed, however, the diaphragm will move in a direction opposite to that of arrow 20.
The novel governing system comprises the following basic elements: 1
(1) The control member 12 movable in axial direction to vary the quantity of fuel fed to the engine by the fuel-injecting device 11.
(2) 'A main actuating member constituted in the present embodiment by the diaphragm 16 which is responsive to any change of the weight of the combustion air fed into the internal combustion engine, it being understood that the weight of the air charge controlled by the throttle 17 will vary in proportion to the pressure prevailing in the intake manifold 13. I
.(3) 'A joining device which connects the control member 12 and the main actuating member 16 for the transfer of actuating motion from the actuating member 16 to the control member 12 in the axial direction of the latter, whichdirection hereinafter will be referred to as the first direction. In the embodiment shown, such joining device comprises a rod 21 fixed to the central portion of the diaphragm 16 and provided at its end with a laterally projecting pin 22, a slotted member 23 engaged by the pin, and a rod 24 connecting the slotted member 23 to the rod 12.
(4) A correction member, such as a pressure gauge 25 or a temperature-responsive thermostat diagrammatically indicated at 26, and
(5) Means connecting the correction member 25, or 26 respectively, to the joining device 21, 22, 23 for transfer of an adjusting motion from the correction member, such as 25, to the joining device in a second direction which extends transversely to the first direction, such means comprising in the present embodiment a two-armed lever 27 pivotally connected to rod 21 preferably at the free end thereof, a two-armed lever 28 jour- Patented Mar. 4, 1958 3 a link 31' which connects the other arm of lever 28 to one arm of lever 27.
In the embodiment shown, the other arm of lever 27 is connected by .a. link 32 to one arm of .a bell crank. 33
which is fulcrumed on. a'stationary, bracket".34and' has: its other arm connected by. a link 35 to thetherrnostat tion extending: transversely to the arrow 20 to thereby effect-a"corrective-adjustment of' the control member 12" in addition to the actuating motion of the diaphragm 16'. Thus, it will appearthatwhen the temperature .ofthe air snckedinto the cylinders of theyengineincreases; links 35 and 32-will be moved inthe. directionof'arrows 36' and 37 whereby lever 27 will ,bcrocked upwardly about its right hand end lifting pin 22. .Pin 22; however, is. guided by" link 21 along an arc about apoint'which sub.- stantially coincides with the center of the diaphragm. 16. Therefore, pin 22is movable substantially at right angles to link-21r Astheslot' 40 of the slotted member 23 is. slightly inclined-pin, 22causes the slotted. member 23' to be displaced. in a direction away from the engine. 10.. The slotted member 23, in its'turn; will displace: link' 24 and control member 12 in-a direction opposite to the. arrow 20 thusreducing the quantity of fuel injected. Sucha reduction of the fuel feed correspondsto theres' duction-of"thedensity of the combustion air caused by the rise of 'thetemperature. tainedwhen 21*" reduction of the atmospheric pressure causes'the pressure gauge ZSftoeXpandand lever 28 to rockinclockwise directionwhereby 1ever.27 will be rocked'upwardlyabout its left hand end. It will be understood; of course, that'bothrocking motions of lever. 27 will be superimposedupon each other when changes of the temperature and of the air pressure occur simultaneously.
The opposite corrective adjustment of control member 12 will occur upona reduction of the temperature or" an increase of the atmospheric pressure, aswill be. readily understood. In such event, pin 22. will be; depressed moving control men1ber'12'in the direction of arrow 20.
From the foregoing it. Will be understood that upward or-downwardadjustmentof the.joining deviceeifects' a correctiveadjustment of'the controLmember 12 in addition to theactuating motion accomplished bydiaphragm' 16. Aswill now be explained such corrective adjustment caused by the up-and=down adjusting motion;transferred to the joining device. from the correction member 25' or 26 is variable by movement of theactuating member' lfi in'such a,mannerthat,"for.a given movement of,"
A similar. effect'will'be obmanifold 13 and in the diaphragm chamber 15 increases.
'As"a-result; the diaphragm 16 movesopposite to the direction of arrow 20 thereby compressing spring 18. This actuating motion of the diaphragm 16 is transferred to the control member 12 through the elements 21, 22, 23 and 24 of the joining device; thus reducing the quantity of fuelinjected: When-,thisttransfer;ofymotion occurs, the rod 37 will rock about, its pivot 39 whereby the angle A included between the slot 40 anda line 41 perpendicularly to rod 21*.will bereduced'tdthe'amountiB; the:slot dthiow assuming the position 40"shown injdash-dotted lines. As a result, a given increment of the adjusting .motion imparted; to; pini22ialong. slot- 40Lwillr produce a smaller increment of corrective adjustment of control member 12 than before when link 37 was in 'the position shown in full lines. When the'throttleis fully closed the member 23 will be moved to the position 23' discussed above, its slotbeing inthe position 40". Inhthisposition the, angle. B has: beenfurther reduced to zero so that.
a verticaldisplacementof pin 22 does not affect the positionof control member 12 in any way.
WhileangleAcoordinated tothe extreme full load conditionof, controhmember,12:.is,larger than angle .13, it is. stilllso. small;that the. actuation of rod 21 by the diaphragm 16..will. exertianegligible vertical force component only upon. the pin v22. Therefore, the correction -ther-axial', direction. of controlmember 12, the link 37 adjustment to be larger than positioning the control member 12 for asmaller fuel feed.- This result is, obtained by a pivotal movement of the slotted member 23.v The in a direction away from theengine lflpulling theslotted 1 member 23 to the position shown ,indottedlines at 23'.

In Figs. 4 and.5.,therejis.illustrated an embodimentdiffering from .thatshownin .Figs: 1, ,2 and. 3 by the struc,- ture .of the-meansconnectingthe correction member to the joining device. lnthis embodiment, such means comprises; alinkage -in.whichboth. :Lthermostat 44am! a pressure-responsive device. 49-. are included. in scriatim. More particularly, the. joining device comprises a linkage composed of the thermostat 44 provided with a stem 46, a bell crank 47 pivoted thereto andfulcrumed on a stationary bracket 48', and a pressure gauge 49, compressible' by atmospheric pressure, such pressure gaugebeing connected by a stem 50 to the bell.crank 47and by a .stem51 to the pin or follower member 22. The other elements. are arranged in. the same manner. as shown in Figs. 1; 2 and3 and described with reference thereto.
Hence, it will appear thatin this embodiment the link age only .for adjusting the elevation of the follower member; ZZdiffell'S? from .the mechanism shown in Figs.

to .thebracket 38, aswvill appear from Fig.5..
(1) a first link 52 mounted for rocking motion about an axis 53 which is laterally offset from the first direction, i. e. the axis of rod 12;
(2) a second link 54 pivotally connected to the first link 52 at a pivot point 55, and
(3) means for connecting one of said links, such as 54, to the control member 12 and for connecting the other one of said links, such as 52; to the main actuating member or diaphragm 16, such means comprising links 56 and 57 in the embodiment shown.
The pivot point 55 is so spaced from the axis 53 that it is substantially aligned with said first direction, i. e. the axis of control member 12, as indicated at 55, when the throttle is closed and the diaphragm is fully sucked into the housing 15 for zero fuel injection, such position of the links 52, 54 and 57 being indicated by the dashdotted lines 52', 54 and 57'. The two-armed lever 27 which is mounted and operated in the same manner as described with reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 by a thermostat 26, a pressure gauge 25, and associated levers 28 and 33 and links 31 and 32, is directly or indirectly con nected to the second link 54, for instance by a connecting pin 59, so as to rock link 54 about the pivot point 55. Such rocking motion is indicated by the arrows 58 when the parts assume the position shown in full lines, and by the arrows 60 when the parts assume the position indicated by the dash-dotted lines 52', 54' and 57'. Here again, a certain increment of the adjusting motion produced by the correction member 25 or 26 will cause a corrective adjustment of control member 12, such corrective adjustment, however, decreasing down to zero" the control member 12 adjusting the fuel feed is actuated by a substantially straight linkage movable in its lengthwise direction, such linkage being automatically actuated by an actuating member, such as diaphragm 16, responsive to' any change of the weight of the air charge of the engine. One or more correction members movable in response to a physical change in the atmosphere, such as change in temperature or pressure, are adapted to adjust a joining device included in the linkage. The adjusting motion so produced, however, is variable by movement of the actuating member 16 in such a manner that, for a given movement of the correction member 25 or 26, positioning the control member 12 for a larger fuel feed causes the corrective adjustment to be larger than positioning the control member 12 for a small fuel feed, as shown at 23'. The corrective effect produced by the correction member 25 or 26 on the position of controlmernber 12 is proportional to the weight of the air charge. Therefore, when the engine is operated with half of its full power, the control member 12 determining the amount of fuel injected is only adjusted half of the full adjustment obtained by the same change of the atmospheric condition when the engine is operated at full power. When the fuel feed is reduced to zero, no adjustment of control member 12 will be produced by a change of the atmospheric condition. Such a correction proportional to the total quantity of fuel injected corresponds to the exact requirements.
In one form of the novel control system, the joining device mounted for an adjusting motion transversely to avest in the slotted member, the rockingmotion of the slotted member being" produced by the main actuating motion in such asense that the slot of the slotted member will be more inclined when the control member is in its full power position and will be less inclined when the control member is in a reduced power position. The maximum inclination of the slot, however, is so small that the actuating force transferred by the joining device will not produce any material force component reacting upon the thermostat or pressure gauge. 7
In another form of the novel control system, the joining device capable of adjustment transversely to the main actuating motion comprises a pair of links pivoted to each other. The corrective effect is obtained in that one of the links is movable about a pivot point which, when the linkage is actuated to increase the fuel feed, is increasingly offset from the direction of the main actuating motion. 7
The term physical change in the atmosphere is used hereinafter to designate changes occurring in the atmosphere due to variations in temperature, pressure, et cetera.
