To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES E. LEADLEY, of Camden, in the county of Camden and State .of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
. clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to flue and tubular steam-boilers, and is especially adapted for use in connection with gas-generating furnaces, blast-furnaces, and other metallurgicfur naces for the purpose of utilizing the heat in the products of combustion and gases given off from such furnaces for generating steam or heating water. 1
Incarrying out my invention an uprigh tubular boiler provided with a fire-box, grate,
and ash-pit, and having an uptake or stack, is provided with a central divided flue connected at its lower end on one side with a pipe p from the gas-generating or other furnace, and
on the other side with a pipe connected with astand-pipe, the lower branch or end of which extends down into a seal-box or hydraulic main and dipping into thewater therein, and the upper portion of which extends to near the top of the boiler, and has its end provided with a close-fitting cap or lid, which is hinged or pivoted, and may be readily opened for the escape of waste products of combustion.
Having stated the nature and object of my invention, I will now more particularly describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows an elevation of my improved boiler. Fig. 2 shows acentral vertical section of the boiler and hydraulic seal-box, and Fig. 3 shows a horizontal section of the boiler above the seal-box.
The shell of the boiler A is set upon the cast-iron or other base, B, which forms the ashpit. The fire-box Gis formed in the boiler above the base so that an annular water-chamber is formed between it and the outer shell. The stack F opens into a large funnel, G. The door a closes an opening into the fire-box, anddoor a closes an opening into the ash-pit. A pressure-gage, H, and a water-gage, I, are connected to the side of the boiler, and a safety-valve, K, is fitted to the steam-pipe at the top of the boiler. A pipe, L, leading from the gas-generating or other furnace, connects near the lower end of the boiler with the central flue, M, divided by a vertical hollow water-circulating diaphragm, m, into a rising and return passage, and the return-passage is connected at the bottom by a pipe, N, with the uptake-pipe P, and with the dip-pipe 0, extending down into the hydraulic seal-box R, and dipping into the water contained therein. A pipe, S, rising from the top of box It, serves for conducting gas to the holder or place of use. My improved boiler is well adapted for use in connection with gas-generating furnaces in which water-gas is produced,and serves for the passage of waste products of combustion given off from such furnace during the time the airblast is being admitted for raising the fuel to ahigh heat, and also for the passage of hot gas to be stored generated in the furnace during the period in which steam is being admitted for decomposition. Hot products of combustion or waste gases from any source are conducted through flue M and off by the uptake P, the lid 10 thereof being open while hot gases to be stored used direct are passed through flue M and by pipe 0 into the seal box R, and thence by pipe S to the place of storage or use, the upper lid, 1), being closed at this time in order to cause the gas to pass from pipe 0 through the water in box R. The water-seal prevents the backfiow of gas when the lid 19 is open. Should the volume of products of combustion or gas flowing through flue M be sufficiently largeand at sufficiently high temperature to heat the water and generate steam, no fire will be required on the grate; but if the quantity and heat of the products and gases is deficient a fire may be keptin the fire-box, and this fire may be used 'alone for heating the boiler. Both the central flue, M, andthe fire boxand grate are, however, useful and desirable in conjunction for heating the boiler, and the boiler is improved by being made adapted for utilizing both sources of heat. The damper f in stack F is used for checking combustion, when desired, in the fire- 2. The central flue, M, closed at the top, and having a hollow water-circulating diaphragm or partition, m, and united by an inlet-pipe, L, and an outlet-pipe, N, for conveying furnace gases, in combination with a boiler, for the purpose described.
3. The central 'fiue having the diaphragm and the connecting inlet and outlet pipes, as described, in combination with the boiler, the hydraulic seal-box It, the dip-pipe O, and up take 1?, having a lid, 1), at its upper end, as and for the purpose described.
4. The steam-boiler having a fire-box and a connected stack, in combination with the central flue and the connected inlet-pipe and outlet-pipe for conveying furnace gases, for the purpose described.
