HEATING-DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,045, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed January 29, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. WEAMER and FRANKLIN T. ZIMMERMAN, of Auburn, De Kalb county, Indiana, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Heating- Drums and Dampers for StovePipes, 85c. and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specificaion, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of our improvement, with parts broken away and parts in section, disclosing the inner construction. The damper in this view is open to permit the direct passage of heat and smoke up the pipe. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device, taken on the right side'froin the position shown in Fig. 1. In this view parts are broken away and in section. Fig. 3 is also a sectional elevation with partsbroken away. This view shows the damper closedin the pipe, whereby the heat and smoke are deflected upward from the pipe into one compartment of the outer chamber and then passed downward in the opposite chamber, and then through an opening in the lower part of the pipe, and thence up the main body of said pipe, as indicated by arrows. Fig. 4 is a section on the line m m of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of the lower end of the device, showing a view of the slide in the pipe. Fig. 6 is a plan and side view, respectively, of the damper.

A represents the stove-pipe, and B a cylindrical casing, of larger diameter, fixed thereto.
Said casing is provided with conical ends B", which fit closely around the pipe.
G is the drum, having conical ends 0. The drum is of greater diameter than the cylindrical casing. The conical ends of this drum are secured to the pipe above and below the ends of the casing B.

F is a rod secured to the damper, and by means of which it is pivotally secured in the pipe.
F is the handle on rod F for operating the damper.
G is a slide provided with handle G.
H H are guide-strips or lugs on pipe A, in which the slide G works.
I is an opening in the pipe, which may be wholly or partially closed by the slide G.
.I is an opening in the pipe opposite from opening I. By adjusting the damper F the heat can be deflected through the opening I, or permitted to pass uninterrupted up the pipe.
J, is a pipe or tube passing through the drum 0 and easing B and communicating with the J is a similar pipe, and communicates with the same annular space. By means of this arrange ment the air is permitted to circulate freely within said space.
By means of the damper F or slide I the draft can be regulated. W hen the fire is first started, the damper F should be opened to permit the draft to pass directly up the pipe. After considerable heat has been generated, the draft may be deflected by turning the damper in the position shown in Fig. 3. Such action will cause the heat and draft to follow the course indicated by the arrowsthat is to say, the heat will pass upward through the space D, thence over the tops of the partitions E, as shown in Fig. 2, thence downward through the space D and into the pipe-opening I, and thence up the pipe and out the chimney. It will be observed that by this arrangement the heat, which usually passes directly up the pipe, is caused to pass up one side of the drum and down the other side, and is then permitted to escape through the open ing 1, and thence up the pipe, thereby heating the drum.
It must be apparent that there are several modifications in form that we may resort to without departing from the spirit of our invention.
