Description

Jan. 27, 1959 D.- M. BLOSSER' CAR TENT Filed Sept. 24, 1956 T. a I w i p M m #4 T M.
477-am 4'K United States Patent CAR TENT Denzil Maurice Blosser, Long Beach, Calif. Application September 24, 1956, Serial No. 611,459 1 Claim. (Cl. 135-71) This invention relates to a car tent, and particularly one in which a frame is detachably mounted on the top of the vehicle, the frame being provided with telescoping rods which project horizontally towards one side of the vehicle so that the inclosed area of the tent is located on the ground and at one side of the vehicle.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel car tent of the character stated, which can be quickly and easily extended or retracted, and which is carried on the roof or top of the car so that it maybe at all times ready for use as desired.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel car tent which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be easily mounted on the roof of the car.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my car tent in position on a vehicle.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of one of the corner supports of the frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, my car tent 1 is mounted on the roof 2 of the vehicle 3 in the nature of a luggage carrier. The frame 1 is substantially rectangular in shape and consists of two frame strips 4 and 5 which extend horizontally of the car top 2 and are secured to the top in the following manner: Each of the frame strips 4 and 5 are provided with a pad 6 at each end thereof which rests on the roof 2. Suitable hook straps 7, of usual and well known design, are secured to the strips 4 and 5 and engage the usual gutter 8 on the car roof. Thus the strips 4 and 5 are securely mounted on the car roof 1 but are readily removed when desired. The strips 4 and 5 extend longitudinally on the roof and substantially the full length thereof. A pair of tubes 9 and 10 are fixedly secured ,at the front and rear of the frame 1, that is, the tube 9 is fixedly mounted adjacent the front edge of the strips 4 and 5 While the tube 10 is fixedly secured adjacent the rear end of these strips. The tubes 9 and 10 thus extend horizontally and transversely of the top 2 of the vehicle. A plurality of telescopically mounted extensions 11 are projectable from the tube 9, and similar extensions 12 are projectable from the tube; 10. The extensions 11 and 12 thus extend horizontally beyond the side of the vehicle 3 and form the roof frame members of the tent. A tie rod 13 is attached to the outer end of the outermost extensions 11 and 12 and acts as a brace and spacer for the extensions.
A pair of posts 14-15 extend downwardly from the outer corners of the rectangular frame formed by the members 11, 12 and 13. These posts rest on the ground and support the outer ends of the extensions 11 and 12. The posts 14-15 each fit into a pad 16 on the outer ends of the extensions 11 and 12. Thus the rods 14-15 may be removed when the extensions 11-12 are retracted. A canvas or other fabric cover 17 is thrown over the extensions 11-12 and the sides of this tent cover extend to the ground, thus forming a three sidedinclosure; the fourth side of the inclosure is the vehicle 3. The canvas cover or tent 17 is attached at one end to the bar 18, which bar is provided with a number of snap fasteners so that the tent 17 is thus attached to the frame 1 at one end.
When not in use the tent 17 is rolled up and is stored parallel to the bar 18. The tent 17 may also include a floor diagrammatically shown at 19 and one end of this floor can be pinched under the lower edge of the car door, thus holding the floor in position.
Having described my invention, I claim.
A car tent comprising a frame, said frame including horizontally arranged strips, the ends of said strips being joined together to form said frame, means detachably securing said strips to the roof of the car, a pair of tubes fixedly mounted on said strips, said tubes being horizontally arranged and spaced on said strips, extensions comprising a plurality of arms telescopically mounted in each of the tubes, said extensions being extendable horizontally toward one side of the car to form roof members, a bar fixedly mounted on said tubes at substantially. the longitudinal. center of said tubes, said bar extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the car, fastening means on said bar, a fabric cover, one end of said fabric cover being secured to said fastening means, said cover extending over the extensions to form an inclosure, said inclosure being arranged at one side of the car, a tie rod extending between and secured to the outermost extension, and a corner post depending from the outer ends of the extensions and resting on the ground.
