To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, CARL KEIBEL, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Folsong, near Tauer, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders; and I do hereby dclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters. or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part o f this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in candle-holders or attachments to Candlesticks or chandeliers, and has for its object to provide means whereby candles of different diameters may be held by the holder without reducing or enlarging the diameter of such candles by shaving the end or wrapping paper or other material upon said end to reduce or enlarge its diameter to make it t the holder or candlestick.

The invention consists7 essentially, of a preferably conical or tapering sleeve or thimble, screwthreaded upon its interior periphery, and preferably cut away to form tongues or fingers, for purposes hereinafter described; and the invention further consists in the combination, with the screw-threaded sleeve, of an inclosing sleeve or thimble, provided in its bottom with openings, for purposes herein after set forth 5 and the invention further consists in constructing the holder in such manner as to adapt it for general use on Candlesticks or holders of. usual construction.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis an y elevation of an ordinary candlestickprovided with the improved holder, shown in section. Fig. 2 shows the holder and part of the candlestick in elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder and its inclosing-sleeve. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the inclosing-sleeve detached. Figs. 5 and 6 show the holder detached in section and by a plan view,.respectively, the sections being taken on line .r x of the latter iigure. Fig. 7 shows in section the holder with its inclosing-sleeve mounted upon a plug for application to eandlesticks of usual construction.

The holder may be permanently attached to or formed on a can dlestick, and made of any suitable material in which a screwthread may be molded, cut, or spun--suchas metal, sheet metal, glass, or porcelain, or other suitable material-and when so constructed the holder may or may not be provided with a screwtheaded shank to screw it into a boss or bearing formed'in the upper tubular part of the candlestick. I prefer, however, to make the holder, with its inclosing-sleeve, detachable from the Candlestick, so as to facilitate the cleaning thereof, or so as toreadly replace it in case it should become broken when formed of some fragile material.

The holder is adapted for'use with or without an inclosing-sleeve. In practice I preferably employ such a sleeve to receive and hold the drippings of the candle, as well as the cuttings taken from the end thereof when the candle is screwed into the holder. If preferred, however, the Candlestick may be provided with a projecting, flaring, or other iange or rim on a level with the upper face of the boss, in which the holder is seated, not to receve the drippings from the candle only, but also to receive the cuttings taken from the end of the candle when it is screwed into the holder.

The holder itself, when made of a rigid material, is made to taper from its flaring mouth downward, to adapt it to hold candles of different diameters. This is, however, not absolutely necessary when the holder is made of some more or less flexible material, in which the screw-thread may be cut or spun, in which case the holder may be made practically tubular, since the fingers or tongues will be more or less elastic, and said tongues forming a trumpet-shaped or daring mouth, candles of various diameters maybe held thereby, as the tongue `will yield radially to a greater or less extent either way. When, however, the holder is constructed of a more or less exible mate rial, the tongues should possess sufficient rigidity to insure their cutting into the end of and hold the candle securely.

To facilitate the removal of the drippings IOS and cuttings, and to avoid the soiling ofthe Candlestick, the inclosing-sleeve is preferably made detachable from the holder proper, and is provided in its bottom with a central aperture and two 0r more circumferential openings, that afford access through its under side, and whereby such drippings or cuttings may be readily removed.

In the accompanying drawings, C indicates the Candlestick, provided with a boss or seat, c, that has a central screw-threaded opening, c", for the reception of the screw-threaded shank or stem h of the holder H.

The holder H consists of a base-disk, h', to which-is securely attached, or upon which is formed, a shank, h, and of three (more or less) fingers or tongues, h2, having their upper portions made to iare or curve more or less ontwardly, and preferably made to taper from their upper daring edges to the disk 7i. -A continuous screw-thread common to all the tongues is formed upon or cut in their inner faces, as shown, each tongue presenting, therefore, upon its vertical faces a series of sharp cutting-points, p, formed by the apex of the salient angle of the screw-threads. This arrangement facilitates the fixing into position ofthe Candle, as the sharp edges will readily bitein and take hold ofthe candle when screwed into the holder. When the holder is made of sheet metal, the sleeve, after having the screwthread Cut or spun thereon, may then be cut away to form the elastic tongues h2,and where the metal is cut away a series of very sharp Cutting-points will be formed upon the edges, as above set forth.

The inclosin g YVsleeve or thiinble Sois tubular, and has a daring mouth, s, and preferably a recurved tiange, s', as shown. In its bottom is formed a central opening, s2, through which the shank h of the holder proper passes. Itis further provided with two (more or less) Circnmferential openings, s3, arranged around vthe central opening, s2.

The shank hof the candlestick may be provided with any suitable screw-thread, either a screw-thread adapted to be screwed to a metallic seat, or a wood-screw thread, as shown in Fig. 7, to adapt it to be mounted upon a plug or cork, B, for use with and as an attachment for any usual form of Candlestick.

It will be seen that when the shank of the holder H is passed through the opening s2, and the holder screwed into its seat or plug, the latter will tirmly hold'the sleeve or thimble S in position.

Having now described my invention, what I claim is l. The combination, with a candlestick or analogous device, of a holder composed of an interiorly-screw-threaded sleeve tapering from top downward, into which candles of various diameters may be screwed, as described.

2. The combination, with a Candlestick or analogous device, of a holder composed of aseries oftingers or tongues provided u pon their inner faces with a continuous screw-thread common to all the tongues, between which the candle is screwed, and by which it is securely held, as described.

3. The combination, with a Candlestick or analogous device provided with a boss or seat having a screw-threaded opening, of a holder composed of a series of tongues or fingers provided upon their inner faces with a continuous screw-thread common to all the tongues, and with a screw-threadedstem or shank, whereby said holder may be'detaohably connected with said candlestick, as and for the purposes specified.

4. The combination, with acandlestick or analogous device having a boss or seat provided with a screw-threaded opening, of a candle-holder provided with a screwthreaded shank, and an inclosing-sleeve for the same provided in its bottom with openings 83, and adapted to be mounted upon said shank, and held firmly between the holder and seat on the Candlestick when said holder is screwed thereto, as described, and for the purposes specified.

5. The combination, with a Candlestick or analogous device having a boss or seat provided with a screwthreaded opening, of a holder composed of a tapering sleeve provided with an interior screw-thread and a screwthreaded shank, said sleeve being cut away to form a series of more or less elastic fingers or tongues, having upon their vertical edges a series of cutting-points formed by the apices of the salient angles of said screw-thread, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

6. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for Candlesticks composed ofa downwardly-tapering holder formed of fingers or tongues provided upon their inner surfaces with a continuous screw-thread common to all the tongues, said holder being provided with a shank whereby it may be secured to a cork or other plug inserted in any usual candlestick, and whereby candles of different diameters may be held thereby, as set forth.

7. As a new article ofmannfaoture, the hereindescribed candle-holder H and its inclosingsleeve S, constructed foroperation and attachment to a Candlestick of usual construction, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
