(Cl. 20-2) The present invention relates to improvements for ventilating attics and for allowing the access of light and air thereto. More specifically, the present invention relates to new and improved package dormer units and method of providing the same on buildings.
Oneobject of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which contains all the parts necessary for providing a roof with a complete, Weather-tight dormer unit, which is designed in such a manner that it can be installed easily and quickly not only during the construction of new buildings but also in existing buildings without requiring any basic changes or alterations of an existing structure.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is shaped and dimensioned in such a manner that it lits rafters irrespective of whether or not they are spaced in the standard manner or properly centered, and which will t any pitch ofaroof.
A`further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which consists of only a few simple parts that can be manufactured inexpensively and are light in weight so that they can be handled easily, which-according to the specic method disclosed hereinafterw-can be installed with a minimum of skill by anyone who is able to use a few simple tools, and which is sturdy, durable,` of a pleasing outer appearance, `and well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended. `lWith `the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangements of parts without "departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing a single window dormer unit made primarily of wood is shown, although multiple units, or units made of metal, plastic material or the like, obviously can be made also according to the principle of the present invention.
The numerals 2 and 4 denote a pair of rafters, to which are attached roofing boards 6 and roofing 8 (Fig. 2) in the usual manner. The parts 2, 4, 6 and 8, which are indicated by dash-and-dotted lines in the drawing, form no part of my present invention. A package dormer unit according to the present invention, as delivered to the ultimate user for assembling and installation consists of a window unit 10, a pair of inner side plates 12 of plywood or the like, a pair of outer side plates 14 of plywood or the like, a top plate 16 of plywood o-r the like, a pair of spacing boards 18, two pairs of angular side flashing members 20 and 22, a sill flashing member 24, a top flashing member 26, live longitudinal molding members 28, and a package of nails.
These parts are assembled and installed by the following method:
After the most suitable place for the dormer unit has been decided upon, and unless the unit is to be installed in a new construction to which the roof is not yet attached, a portion of the roof covering is removed and the roof sheeting is cut out to provide an opening to be closed ultimately by the dormer unit. Then the window unit 10 is placed in position, is plumbed and held with a temporary brace (not shown), as the unit 1t) will have to be removed again. The window unit 10 consists of a frame portion 30 to which a window sash 32 is hinged by any suitable means, so that the sash 32 can be tilted relative to the frame portion 3l), and of a sill portion 34. The upright edge sections of the inner side of the frame portion 30 are provided with vertical recesses 36, and the sill portion 34 is provided at its lower section with a longitudinal slot 38 and at its extremities with cross-slots 40. if the horizontal distance between the recesses 36 differs from the distance between the rafters 2 and 4, one or more spacing boards 18 (one in the instance shown) may be interposed therebetween to build up to the proper distance, or of the distance between the recesses 36 is larger than the distance between the rafters 2 and 4 the lower portions of the recesses 36 are to be enlarged by cutting oft pieces with a plane or a saw, so that the lower portions of the recesses 36 t between the rafters 2 and 4. Then one edge portion of one of the inner side plates 12 is inserted into the recess 36 of the window unit 10, .and said plate 12 is aligned with the top of the window unit 10, and is adjusted to a level position. For facilitating the level adjustment the plates 12 and 14 preferably are provided with level lines 42 and 44 respectively (Figs. 6 and 8). When level, the one plate 12 is nailed to the rafter 4 and the same is done with the other plate 12, which is nailed to the spacing board 18 and the rafter 2. Thereupon the window unit 10 is temporarily removed. Then the side flashing members 29 are tacked to the plates 12 in` such a manner that their vertical flange portions are adjacent the plates 12 and their horizontal flange portions are parallel to the rafters 2 and 4 respectively. Thereupon the vertical flange portions of the side flashing members 22 are tacked upon the Vertical llange portions of the side flashing members 20 in such a manner that the horizontal flange portions thereof are spaced abovethe horizontal flange portions of the members 20 about three eighths 3 of an inch, so that roof covering can be inserted between the horizontal flange portions of the members 20 and the horizontal flange portions of the members 22. Depending upon the pitch of the roof a portion of each plate 12 will extend more or less below the rafters2 and 4, and this portion may be cut oil. The main portions of the plates 12 extend above the rafters 2 and 4, and the outer side pieces 14 have `to be cut in such a manner that when the lower edges of the plates 14 rest upon the flashing members 22 the side pieces 14 register with main portions of the plates 12 which thus extend above the rafters. After this has been done, the plates 14 are nailed upon the plates 12 with the vertical flange portions of the flashing members 20 and 22 therebetween (Fig. 4). Then a longitudinal vertical edge portion of the sill flashing member 24 from which portions 26 have been cut out (Figs. 14 and 15) is inserted into the slot 38, and the window unit is placed l back into position, thereby the lower extremities of the vertical flange portions of the flashing members and 22 extending into slots 40, to allow the side flashing members 20 and 22 to go over the sill flashing member 24 at the cut-out portions 26 thereof, and the frame portion 30 of the window unit 10 is nailed upon the vertical edge portions of the plates 12 and 14. Then a longitudinal edge portion of the top flashing member 26 is nailed upon a longitudinal edge portion of the top plate 16, and the latter is nailed upon the upper portions of the plates 12 and 14 and the frame portion 30 of the window unit 10. Then the molding members 28, which preferably are quarter-circular in cross-section, are nailed to all right-angularly intersecting joints of the parts 10, 12, 14 and 16. The unit can then be completed by attaching shingles or any other suitable roofing to the top of the plate 16 and by painting the unit.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is ntended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A package dormer unit comprising a window unit having a frame and a sill portion, a pair of inner side plates constructed and arranged for being attached to vertical portions of said window unit as well as to a pair of rafters in such a manner that their main portions protrude ,upwardly beyond the rafters, a pair of outer'side plates constructed and arranged for being secured to those wardly beyond said rafters, at least one spacing board interposed between at least one of said rafters and one of Y said inner side plates, two pairs of side flashing members of which each pair is interposed between and secured to one of said inner side and outer side plates, a top plate constructed and arranged for being secured to the upper edges of said plates, a top flashing member adapted to be attached to said top plate, a sill flashing member secured to the sill portion of said window unit, and a plurality of molding members constructed and arranged for being attached to adjoining edge portions of said plates and said window unit.
to said first slot and extended into the end sections of said sill portion, a pair of first plates adapted to engage with one of their edge portions the recessed vertical edge sections of said frame portion and to be secured thereto, a pair of triangular plates registering with triangular portions of said first plates and adapted to be secured to the latter in such a manner that the lower portions of said first plates protrude beyond said triangular plates so that the latter extend vertically above a pair of rafters of a building, at least one spacing board adapted to be interposed between at least one of said rafters and at least one of the aforementioned lower portions of said first plates, two pairs of side flashing members being shaped as angle bars in cross-section and each pair having vertical flange portions interposed between one of said first plates and one of said triangular plates and having horizontal flange portions which are vertically spaced from one another and the upper horizontal flange portion` being adjacent that edge portion of the triangular plate beyond which protrudes the aforementioned lower portion of the first plate, a third plate adapted to be secured to the upper edges of the said first and said triangular plates, a top flashing member adapted to be attached to said third plate, a sill flashing member extending into the first slot in said sill portion of the window unit, and a plurality of molding members adapted to be attached to adjoining edge portions of said plates and said window unit, the lower extremities of the vertical flange portions of said side flashing `members extending into the second slots in said sill portion,

In a building having a roof supported by roof rafters, a dormer unit occupying an open portion of the roof be tween two rafters, said dormer unit comprising a window unit having a frame portion provided at one side with recessed vertical edge sections and having a sill portion provided at its lower side with a first slot extending'thereinto throughout the length of the sill portionV and a pair of second slots right-angularly disposed to said first slot and extended into the end sections of said sill portion, a pair of first plates each of which has a vertical edge portion extending into and secured to one of the recessed vertical edge sections of said frame member, a pair of triangular plates each of which registers with a triangular portion of one of said first plates and is secured thereto in such a manner that the lower portions of said lfirst plates protrude beyond said triangular plates so that the latter extend vertically above said rafters, a spacing board interposed between one of said rafters and one of the aforementioned lower portions of said first plates, two pairs of side flashing members being shaped like angle bars in cross-section and each pair having verticalflange portions interposed between a pair of plates which pair is formed by one of said first plates and one of vsaidtriangular plates and having horizontal flange portions which are vertically spaced from one another and the upper horizontal flange portion being adjacent that edge portion of the triangular plate beyond which protrudes beyond the aforementioned lower portion of the first plate, a third plate secured to the upper edges of said plates and said window unit, a top flashing member attached to said third plate, a sill flashing member extending Iinto the y first slot in said sill portion of the window unit,.and a plurality of molding members which in cross-section are quarter-circular being attached to right-angularly intersectmg joint portions of said plates and said window unit.
