NITED STATES PATENT @Fercaa STEFAN LUDE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING BD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,485, dated January 30, 1883,
Application filed October 12,1882. (No model.)Y
To all whom it may concern: g
Be it known that I, STEFAN LUDE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in 4the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Beds, of which the t'ollowing is a specification. f
My invention relates to folding beds; and it consists in aI case or frame resembling an ordinary dressingcase, and provided with a movable front having side pieces adapted to be folded inside the case when the mattress is rolled up, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a central longitudinal section of my bed extended for use. Fig. 2 is a similar View folded, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the jointed side pieces.
A represents a frame, made to represent a dressing-case and provided in its upper part with two drawers, A A. The front B of the case A below the drawers is paneled to represent drawers and made movable. This front B forms the foot-board ot' the bedstead when it is drawn out, and is connected to the frame A by side pieces of wood or metal, C, which are hinged together in sections, as shown, and adapted to fold into a small space when the device is closed.
Each section of th'e sides is provided with a bead or rail, c, on its upper edge, on which is a sliding sleeve, C', which does not in any way interfere with thefolding of the side pieces, but when they are drawn out may be slid along the break-joints and secure the whole rm and straight, as seen in Fig. 1. These side pieces are hinged to the inner side ot' case A, as shown. l
Secured to the inner side of the .front B by ahook, b, is a bottom of canvas or othersuitable material, D, which, when the bedis drawn out, is secured at the other end .to similar hooks, b b', at the inside of the case A, and
forms a bottom on which the folding mattress E rests. When the bed is folded the mattress E and the bottom D are both folded and rolled up and secured to the foot-board B by straps d d and hooks d d', as shown by Fig. 2.
When folded the device forms a desirable article of furniture, and the drawers A may be used for any purpose desired, and when extended it forms a convenient and rm bed, is very cheaply and easily constructed, and is operated without the necessity of lifting any part of it, asis usual with folding beds.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a folding bed, the combination, with the frame A and front B, of the jointed side pieces, C, made inv several parts, hinged together, and provided with rails c and lockingsleeves G, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a folding bed, of the case or frame A, provided with drawers A', with the front B, having jointed side pieces, C, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, in a folding bed, of the case A, having drawers A and hooks b', with the movable front B, having folding side pieces, C C, the bottom D, hooks b, mattress E, and strap d and hooks df, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose setfortb.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEFAN LUDE. Witnesses:
J. E. STEvENsoN, GHAs. KREssMANN.
