i 6 claims.' `(ci. sinistra) The present invention relates to polishing lappers for polishing inner cylindrical surfaces.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a lapper embodying a pair of semi-cylindrical sections with means for shifting the same either towards each other or away from eachother for the purpose of making the lapper conform to any particular diameter of a bearing or cylinder, with ,meansV for locking the sections in their adjusted positions.
Another object of the present'invention is the provision of a lapper of the type indicated wherein the sections adjacent their oppositely disposed faces may be provided with bevelled surfaces for receiving therebetween wedges with means for imparting a shifting movement of said wedges for riding upon the bevelled surfaces in either direction for the purpose of shifting the sections away from each other to conform the sections to any particular diameter of a bearing or cylinder, with means for locking the sections in their adjusted positions.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims. Fig. 2 is a similar view in the position of the device when the same has been turned 90 degrees from that shown in Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a longitudinal cross sectional View, partly in elevation, taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 5; and
Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Referring in detail to the present drawing the device includes a pair of semi-cylindrical sections 10, with their straight faces turned towards each other. Co-acting with said sections is U-shaped member 11, the vertical arms of which are disposed within the complementary recesses 12 made adjacent the inner face edges of said sections 10. Transverse bolts 13 are passed through said sections 10 and the vertical arms of said member 11 for maintaining the sections and said member 11 in an assembled co-acting position. Heads 14 and nuts 15, the latter engaging the threaded ends of said bolts 13, are located within sockets 16.
Adjacent the ends of each sections at the straight faces thereof each section 10 is provided with bevelled surfaces 17, between the opposed pairs of which in the two sections 10 wedge 18 is accommodated for shifting movement in either direction and in a longitudinal relation with the lapper. There are two wedges 18, each disposed adjacent one end of the lapper. Screw rod 19 has its lower smooth 2,742,743 Patented Apr. 24, 1956 ICC end passed through lower wedge 18. Rivet 20 at the lower end of said screw rod 19 engages said lower wedge 18 but does not interfere with the rotary movement of the former.
The upper end of said rod 19 is threaded and is in a threaded engagement with the upper wedge 18. Said upper end of screw 19 extends above the upper end of the device and is rigidly engaged by knob 21 by means of which the screw rod may be turned manually in either direction for the purpose of shifting Wedges 18 either towards each other or away from each other depending upon the direction of turning of said screw rod 19.
When said wedges 18 are shifted towards each other they are caused to vride upon the bevelled surfaces 17 for the purpose of shifting sections 10 away from each other. During this operation nuts 15-upon bolts 13 are loosened in order to permit such shifting of said sections 10. When said sections 10 have been shifted to a sufficient distance away from each other, in order to conform the sections to any desired diameter in conformity with the inner diameter of a bearing or cylinder for polishing the inner surface thereof, nuts 15 are then tightened to maintain sections 10 in their adjusted positions.
When screw rod 19 is turned to the opposite direction wedges 18 are caused to shift away from each other. The
wedges riding upon the bevelled surfaces 17 and towards the endsof sections 10, permit said sections to shift towardsv each other when nuts 15 upon bolt 13 aretightened, for the purpose of reducing the diameter of the two sections, in order to conformthe same to the diameter of any Ygiven bearing or cylinder.
The transverse arm 22, connecting the upper ends of arms of said U-shaped member 11, is disposed above knob 21. Connected to said arm 22 is shaft 23, which may be connected to any suitable chuck or any shaft-driving machine for the purpose of imparting a rotary movement to the lapper.
Coil springs 24 in an encompassing relation with the ends of bolts 13, and interposed between heads 14 and the bottoms of sockets 16, being under a contracted tension, tend to exert pressure against said heads 14 and the bottoms 'of said sockets 16 for tending to shift sections 10 towards each other. Action of wedges 18, while they are shifted towards each other by the operation of screw rod 19 shift said sections 10 against the operation of said coil springs 24.
When sections 10 are made of wood or similar cellulosic material, they may be impregnated with oil to which any suitable pulverized abrasive material may readily adhere. The particles of the abrasive material will eventually embed themselves into the surface portions of sections 10 to form ecient abrading surface to act upon peripheral Surfaces of bearings or cylinders in order to exert eicient polishing action thereof. These sections 10 may also be made of a suitable metal if desired.
Said U-shaped member 11 acts as a bracket through which a rotary movement may be imparted to said sections 10 while acting upon the inner periphery of a bearing or cylinder. v
It is further observed that said bolts 13 in addition to constituting means for locking sections 10 in their mutual adjusted relation by the action of said wedges 18 also act as means for connecting said bracket 11 with the lapper.
While there is described herein preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made-therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical sections, having opposed inner surfaces disposed in a face to face relation, at their ends adjacent tions for rigidly locking the same in their adjusted positions.
2. A device of the class described comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical sections having opposed inner faces, means for shifting said sections toward or away from each other, a U-shaped member, said U-shaped member including a pair of parailelly disposed arms and a transverse connecting arm, said parallelly disposed arms being interposed between said sections adjacent the inner faces thereof, said transverse connecting arm being beyond said sections, and a plurality of bolts passed through said sections and said parallelly disposed arms of said U-shaped member for maintaining said sections in their adjusted positions and for maintaining said U-shaped member in a connected relation with said sections.

A device of the class described comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical sections, having opposed inner faces disposed in a face to face relation, at their ends adjacent said opposed inner surfaces said sections being provided with bevelled surfaces, a pair of wedges each mounted between said bevelled surfaces in a contactual relation therewith in the pair of said sections, a screw rod passed through said wedges, said screw rod being adapted for rotary movement in either direction for the purpose of shifting said wedges towards each other or away from each other for adjusting the distance between said sections, a bracket interposed between the inner faces of said sections, one end of said bracket extending beyond an end of said sections, and a plurality of bolts each passed through said pair of sections and through said bracket, said bolts being adapted to lock said sections in their adjusted positions.
4. A device of the character described comprising a pair of sections, each substantially semi-circular in cross section, and having opposed inner faces, the inner faces of said sections having the lateral edges thereof adjacent each other and extending lengthwise of the pair of sections, said sections having beveled surfaces adjacent each opposite end thereof and spaced inwardly from the lateral edges of said inner faces, a pair of wedges mounted between the beveled surfaces complementary thereto, a member connected with the wedges and having means for moving said wedges toward and from each other for adjusting the distanced relation of said sections on a transverse plane, and means carried by said sections on opposite sides of said member and said wedges for locking said sections in their adjusted positions.
5. A device of the character described comprising a pair of sections having opposed inner surfaces disposed in faceto-face relation, said sections having beveled surfaces adjacent each opposite end thereof, a pair of wedges mounted between the beveled surfaces complementary thereto, a member connected with the wedges and having means for moving the wedges toward and from each other, a substantially U-shaped member including a pair of arms extending between the inner surfaces of the sections on opposite sides of the pair of wedges, and means connecting the arms of the U-shaped member with the sections.
6. A device of the character described comprising a pair of sections having opposed inner surfaces disposed in faceto-face relation, said sections having beveled surfaces adjacent each opposite end thereof, a pair of wedges mounted between the beveled surfaces complementary thereto, a member connected with the wedges and having means for moving the wedges toward and from each other, a substantially U-shaped member including a pair of arms extending between the inner surfaces of the sections on opposite sides of the pair of wedges, and bolts each extending through the sections and the U-shaped member for connecting said member therewith.
