Description

Feb. 10, 1953 M. D. HECK NUT-EJECTOR TYPE SOCKET WRENCH F'iled'Oct. 14, 1949 Inventor Patented Feb. 10, 1953 NUT-EJECTOR TYPE SOCKET WRENCH Matthew Dan Heck, Amarillo, Tex., assignor of one-half to Violet L. Potter, Amarillo, Tex.
Application October 14, 1949, Serial No. 121,418
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to socket wrenches and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a socket wrench Whose nut receiving portion is reciprocally mounted upon the handle of the wrench and Which is normally outwardly positioned by means of a compression spring. That portion of the handle which lies within the nut receiving portion is hollowed to receive the end of a bolt or the like upon which a nut is threaded. Removal of the nut from the nut receiving portion is facilitated by movement of the nut receiving member against the action of the spring which automatically ejects the nut. This is sometimes a very tedious job particularly when the nuts are covered with oil or grease and therefore hard to handle with the fingers.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a socket wrench of the character described having simple means for ejecting a nut therefrom.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel nut receiving member for a socket wrench.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for mounting a reciprocal nut receiving member upon the handle of a wrench.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character set forth Which may be easily connected and disconnected from an operating handle.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly broken away, of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view partly in elevation, of the device shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 2, and
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view taken along line 6-6 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a socket wrench having a solid cylindrical handle I!) having an enlarged portion H at one end in which enlarged portion is a socket 12 for receiving an operating handle I 3. The enlarged portion I I provides an annular collar I 4 at its juncture with the main portion ll! of the handle.
At the end of the handle l opposite to that of the enlarged portion ll there is provided a centrally disposed recess l and inwardly of the 2 i recess I5 there is provided a longitudinally extending slot I6.
A cylindrical nut receiving member I! is slidahly mounted upon the handle it! and is provideo, with a diametri ally extending rivet l8 which extends through the slot I6 to thereby limit the longitudinal movement of the nut re.- ceiving member it upon the handle 19.
A compression spring 49 is interposed between the collar l4, and the inner end 20 of the nut receiving member H.
In operation, it will be apparent that when it is, for example, desired to remove a nut 21 from a bolt 22 that the device is so placed that the bolt 22 will enter the recess 15 while the nut 2| will be engaged by the inner faces of the nut receiving member ll. Thereafter, movement of the operating handle !3 will cause the handle Ill and the nut receiving member I i to rotate as unit to thereby eventually remove the nut 21 from the bolt 22. The nut 21 may then quickly be removed from the nut receiving member I! manually moving the nut receiving member inwardly against the action of the spring !9, whereupon the end of the handle containing the recess 15 will abut against the nut 21 and eject the same from the nut receiving member.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and describedherein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising a handle having a recess in one end, an enlarged end for the handle opposite the recessed end and having a socket therein, a nut receiving member reciprocally mounted upon the recessed end of the handle, yieldable means for normally holding nut receiving member outwardly of the end of the handle and means for limiting the reciprocal movement of said nut receiving memher, said last-mentioned means comprising a longitudinal slot in the handle and a rivet diametrically mounted in said nut receiving member and extending through said slot.
