Description

Jan. 20, 1953 H. w. MARANO ENVELOPE AND SUPPORT CLIP THEREFOR Filed Sept. 25, 1950 INVENTOR. 30a Hams/Pr N MAE/9N0.
A TTOR NE Y Patented Jan. 20, 1953 UNITED TES P E Herbert W. Marano, Brooklyn, N.Y., assignor. to r Wilson Jones Company,- Chicago, 111.," a corporation of Massachusetts Application'september 23, 1950;Setial No. 186,360
'2 Claims. (01. 129-20) 1 The present invention relates to storage albums; that is, albums wherein such articles as fiat phonograph record discs'may be stored. In albums of this general type, it is highly desirable that the individual album leaves or disc-holding receptacles lie flatly against one another when the'album cover is opened, and'also swing easily against and away from each other to permit easy inspection of and access to the separate leaves. The foregoing and other objects of the present invention will in part be apparent and in part pointed out specifically in connection with the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof, it being understood that articles other than phonograph record discs may be stored within the album of the present invention.
In the drawings annexed hereto, forming a part hereof,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of device constructed according to and embodying the present invention in open position;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, partly in section, with the upper bracket broken away to show the lower bracket, with the individual leaves spaced away from each other;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3--3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the hinge clip component of my invention.
The album proper is indicated by reference numeral l0 and comprises side panels I2, l4, and back panel 16, to which back panel the cover panels are pivotally connected at l8, l8. The sides and back may be formed of three elements of relatively thick, heavy material, as cardboard, fibre board, wood, metal or the like, to protect the albums contents, but may also be formed of a single sheet of material of leather, synthetic plastic or the like, scored at l8, l8 for hinging to permit swinging of the side panels l2, l4 with respect to the back panel I6. To the inner face 20 of back panel 18 are secured a pair of hinge brackets 22, 22 of the present invention, one each near the top and bottom, and spaced apart a distance the least bit greater than the height of the disc-holding leaves to be disposed therewithin. Each bracket 22 comprises a short flat base portion 24 which rests against back panel l6, and is secured thereto as by rivets 25, 25. Each bracket also includes a semi-circular portion 26 extending outwardly from base 24 at right angles thereto, each extension having a semi-circular slot 28 formed therethrough, spaced from the peripheral curve of the extension.
Each disc holder 30 comprises a pair of similarly rectangular shaped sheets 32, 32, of such material as paper, linen, cloth or the like; secured togetheralong the inner and outer vertical edges 34, 36 and along the lower edge 38. The upperedges 40, 40 are free topermit'them to be spread apart for insertion'of discs or other material into and removal from between: sheets 32, 32. The disc is indicated at 5 in Figure 1. The word record is used herein to designate generally any material to be stored in an album of the type described, and is not to be construed as limited to phonograph recordings and the like.
A pair of hinge clips 50, 50 are provided for each disc holder, one being secured to the upper inner corner and the other to the lower inner corner. Each clip 50 is U-shaped in section having a pair of fiat, spaced apart and opposed wing members 52, 54. Wing 52 is relatively narrow, and is provided with a plurality of triangular punchings 56 directed toward the opposing wing 54. 58 of its xtended side 60 is bent inwardly at right angles. A portion 62 of extension 60 is spun into a small diameter elongated tube to form a hinge pin 64, extending lengthwise beyond the strip 6'6 connecting wings 52, 54. The extended pin 64 is of such diameter as to fit easily into arcuate slot 28. The upper and lower hinge clips are identical, and are stamped from a single, integral blank of suitable metallic material.
As seen in Figure 3, the hinge clip mounted at the lower inner corner of container 30 is secured thereto by inserting both sheets of the container corner between the spread-apart wings 52, and through the sheets 32, 32. The upper hinge clip is locked to but one of the sheets, since, in the form of container shown, the sheets must be separable if access is to be had from the top. Of course, as will be obvious, the containers may be so constructed that the front edge is open, in which case the upper clip will be secured about both sheets, as at the bottom of Figure 3. Pins 64, 64 extend upwardly and downwardly of and in the plane of containers 30, and brackets 22, 22 are so spaced apart as to receive the containers therebetween pins 64, 64 extending through the arcuate slots 28, 28 as shown.
The cover side panels l2, l4 are sufficiently long as to overlie container 30a, or any container even when swung to the outermost part of the brackets from the back panel I6.
With the bracket and hinge clip of the present invention as herein described and illustrated, each of the container leaves 30, 30' may be Wing 54 is wider than wing 52, and the edge shifted independently of the others, and will ride along the track of slots 28, 28 to rest flatly against the other leaves. The brackets 22, 22 may be formed easily, as by stamping same from thin-section metallic material, and the hinge clips, with the integral pin portions, may similarly be formed as by stamping, of thin-section metallic material. The number of containers 30, 30 which may be inserted in the brackets is limited only by the length of the slots and the thickness of the hinge pins. Preferably, the maximum number of containers inserted in any one album book is such as to allow some little movement thereof along the track, and permit free pivoting of the leaves about. the pins.
Having now described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A rectangular envelope open at the top thereof and a support clip therefor, the clip comprising a pair of relatively wide, flat plates of springy metallic material, the plates being integral and connected along corresponding edges, one of which plates is wider than the other and has a portion thereof extended beyond the narrower plate, a hollow circular pin integral with the wider plate and extending upwards of and beyond the aforesaid connected corresponding edges, in line with the extended portion of the wider plate, the narrower plate being inserted within the envelope through the open top thereof and bendable into confronting relationship to the wider plate, whereby to grip the envelope between the two plates.
2. The combination of claim 1, wherein the extended portion of the wider plate is bent at right angles to the plane of said plate, and the edge of the envelope adjacent the open top rests against the bend.
