SEAL FOR BANDS AND THE LIKE Filed March 14, 1950 IN V EN TOR.
Patented Dec. 2, 1952 SEAL FOR BANDS AND THE LIKE Stanley P. Turek, La Grange, 111., assignor to Modern-Aire Mfg. Corp., Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Application March 14, 1950, Serial N0. 149,507
4 Claims.
This invention relates to a seal of the kind used to secure, to an eye or other object, one end of a tension band in the general form of a strap, and more particularly such as is made of metal. It consists of a one-piece stamping so formed as to be laterally applicable to the band end portion which is to be secured, and cooperating therewith in holding the band fixedly in any desired lengthwise adjusted position.
A useful application of the present seal is with metallic bands which are employed in connection with mounts for antenna and the like. Such bands are commonly placed around a chimney, or other vertically extending object, with opposite ends of the band attached to a mast supporting bracket. It is important that the band be adjusted with a requisite tension according to the conditions of each application, and when done that this adjustment be made secure by use of the present seal irrespective of any screwthreaded adjusting device which may optionally be employed.
A suggestive embodiment of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing where- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper end portion of a chimney to which are applied two bands each in connection with a mast-supporting bracket, opposite ends of each band being secured with the use of the present seal;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one end of a band inserted through an eye for securement thereto, the seal being shown proximate to one edge of the band in position for application thereto by a movement which is laterally of the band;
Fig. 3, which is a similar view, shows the seal applied to the band with the laterally extended ear of the seal bent pursuant to a first operation; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing both ears of the seal bent to their locking positions in pursuance of a final operation.
In Fig. 1 is indicated a suggestive application of two attaching bands B to a chimney C, each band being connected to a corner bracket 6 which affords vertical support to a mast M. One end of each band is shown as attached directly to the bracket whereas the other band end is connected to an eye bolt 8 which is adjustably secured to the bracket. Applied to each end portion of the band is the improved seal S of this invention,
As shown best in Figs. 2-4, the seal may be produced from a metallic stamping of one piece in a form ready for application to the band to be secured. Each seal comprises a base I0 having along one side a transversely disposed web II which supports a, head I2 that is extended nearly in parallelism with the base but spaced therefrom. Adjacent the web II and in coplanar relation therewith is an ear I5 which is also extended transversely of the base but for a distance considerably further therefrom than is the head. Opposite the ear I5 is a second car I6 that is extended laterally away from the base, with a transverse pre-formed bend line H3 at a point which is a distance from the base It) substantially equal to the distance through which the web II proceeds away from the base. A fiange I9 is turned inwardly from the edge of the head I2 toward the base Ill at a point about opposite the edge thereof from which the ear I6 is extended.
A seal so constructed and formed is applied to the band B when it is ready to be secured. One end portion of the band is first inserted through the eye to which it is to be attached, and then doubled back upon itself to form a second ply 20 as shown best in Fig. 2. The seal is then advanced laterally to straddle the two band plies which are free to pass between the base I!) and the flange I9 so as to occupy positions between the base and head I2. Initially the head may stand out at a slight angle relative to the base so as to maintain sufiicient clearance between its flange and the base to facilitate movement therethrough of the two plies of the band. At this point the laterally extended ear I6 is bent outwardly into parallelism with the outturned ear I5 so as to extend past the proximate edge of the two plies of the band, thereby confining the hand against lateral shifting movement relative to the seal.
As a final operation, the doubled end portion 2i} of the band may be doubled back once more to overlie the head, as shown in Fig. 4. When done, the two ears I5 and I6 are then struck down, as by a hammer, so that their end portions engage this outermost third ply 22 of the band, as indicated clearly in Fig. 4. In this operation the head 52 will also be pressed down tightly against the second band ply 20. The band, in the region where attachment is made to the eye, .is thus twice doubled upon itself, once when passing through the eye and again when reversing itself adjacent the head of the seal. The two ears which are arranged to engage the outermost ply 22 of the band in its final position prevent any slipping or release movement of the band so that the seal may be counted upon to effectively hold these parts fixedly in position.
Whether or not an eye bolt 8 be used as a 3 medium for attachment of either end of the band is immaterial. This is just one example of a device to which the band may be attached. Another example is the slot shown at one end of the mast-supporting bracket 6. In any case where the band is to be fitted through or around a part where attachment is to be made, the end portion of the band when doubled back upon itself is adapted to receive the present seal and be secured thereby so as to remain fixedly in place.
I claim: t
