This invention relates to sports caps. More particularly the invention concerns a cap having a crown portion including a pocket on a front portion thereof.
An object of this invention is to provide in a cap an improved pocket construction formed in the crown thereof, said pocket construction including a minimum amount of material supplementing that of the crown whereby to reduce bulkiness at the pocket and the pocket being adapted to be extended to accommodate bulky articles.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a cap, improved pocket construction formed Vin the crown thereof, said pocket construction including an opening at the upper end thereof and a closure therefor which blends in with the crown and gives a smart appearance to the cap as a whole.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cap comprising aV crown including seamed panel portions together with a pocket panel disposed on one of the panel portions and interconnected to the crown in a manner avoiding undue bulkiness at the panel seams.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a cap comprising a crown formed from seamed panels, together with a pocket on one-of said panels, the pocket including a panel formed with an expansion gusset and closure means at the upper end of the panel which gives a smart, finished appearance to the pocket and harmonizes with the crown as a whole.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a neat, durable cap including a pocket and closure therefor, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, comfortable to wear, attractive in appearance, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this invention and accompanying the same:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the front portion of a cap embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial elevational View of a rear portion thereof;
Fig. 3 is a. sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
3 Claims. (Cl. 2-197) Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken of Fig. 1 and y Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5---5 .of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, I0 designates a cap embodying the invention. The same comprises a crown portion I I conformable to the head of the wearer, and a visor IZprOjectng from the front thereofv and` secured thereto, as at I3. v
The crown portion I I `comprises a pair of similar, fabric side panelsl anda pair of interconnected, similar, fabricintermediate panels I5 which interconnect side panels I4. The panels I4, I5 are suitably cut to provide proper contour for the crown'. As shown in vFig. 5, the marginal edges of each pair of adjacent panels I4, I5, are folded back on their respective inner on the line surfaces, as atl Illa,y I5a, respectively. .The thus.
formed, abutting, folded side edges I6, I'I vare se.- cured together'by stitching I3. The seam formed by stitching I8 extends .from the rear edge I9 of crown II to a point 20.
A tape 2l having infolded edges'22 is placed over the edge portions Ida, I 5a=and is secured in place by stitch lines 23, 24. Thetapes 2I extend from the front edge I3 of the -crown to the rear edge I9 thereof. The abutting edges of Aintermediate panels I5 are similarly treated, as shown in Fig. 4, except that lthe stitching I8 extends from the rear edgey I 9 to the front edge I3y of the crown.
A substantially rectangular shaped pocket, open at the top and generally indicated Vat 25, is formed on the outer surface of the crownIII on a front portion thereof.v The pocket. 25 extends between the juncture of eachv pair Aof ad,- jacent panels I4, I5 and upwardly fromy edge I3 to point 20. The pocket 2,5 is formed by means of a single, substantially rectangular shaped pocket panel 26 of fabric. The panel 26 is disposed over the outer surface of panels I5, whichv form the back portion of the pocket 25. The top marginal Aportion 21 of panel 25 is folded into contact with the inner surface thereof tolform a top folded edge 28. The panel 26 further comprises side edges 29 which are received between the folded side edges I6, I1 of panels I4, I5, respectively, as shown in Fig. 4. The edge 29 of panel 26 is secured to panel I 4 by a stitch line 30 and to panel I5 by a stitch line 3I. The bottom edge of the panel 26 is secured between the bottom edges of panels I5 and the visor at I3.
The panel 26 further includes a vertically disposed, box pleated portion 32 on the central porportions 36, 3'I on either side of the fold line 35.:
The portion 36 is secured to panels I5 by a stitch line 38, the lower edge thereof being slightly spaced above the folded edge 28Yof pocket panel-- l The lower marginal YVedge of. portion v3l is 26. folded upwardly into contact with .the innery surface thereof, thus forming fold line 39, A tape 40 provided with slide fastener elements is disposed in contact with the folded marginal edge of portion 31 and secured thereto by a stitch line 4I. Similarly, a tape 42 provided with slide fastener elements is disposed in contact with `marginal portionv 2'I of panel 26, and secured thereto by stitch line 43. The opposite end portions of the strip 34 are received between the abutting edge portions of panels I4, I5 and are traversed by the stitching 24. A slide fastener closure member 44 is provided for interengaging the elements on tapes '40, 42 to open or close the pocket 25. The stitch line 43 secures the upper edge of the pleated portion 32.
It will be apparent that the pocket 25 is conveniently disposed on the front of crown Il, for receiving change,. golf tees and vmiscellaneous articles. I'he pocket is readily opened and closed by vthe highly accessible slide fastener 44. pleated portion 32 provides for expansion of the pocket 25 when the pocket is to receive bulky items. With the portion 32 moving outwardly,
' undue pressure on the cap wearers head is avoided. Upon removal of any item from the pocket 25, the portion 32 readily reassumes its normal, flat folded position relative to the panels I5.
It is also apparent that the closure portion of the pocket 25 isl calculated to give an overall jaunty effect to thev cap as a whole, yet efficiently providing for ready access to the pocket.
The crown portion I I of cap I0 is made adjustable as to sizeby notching the rear portion of panels I5 upwardly from edge I9, as at 50. The edges 5I of panels I5, which denne the notch 50, are symmetrically disposed'on either side of a line projected from the abutting edges of the panels I5. The edges 5I may be suitably hemmed and stitched as at 5,2. A horizontally disposed strap member 53 spans the notch 50 at the lower end thereof. One end member 53 is suitably attached to one of the panels I5 while the other end is provided with a horizontal row of snap fastener elements .54 which are adapted tofselectvely engage complementary fastener elements mounted on the other panel I5. Thus, the edge portions 5I of notch 50 may be brought closer together or spread further apart to regulate the size of the crown portion II of the cap. This feature is of particular importance when bulky items are inserted in pocket 25 and it is then desirable to enlarge the crown size somewhat in order to avoid undue pressure on the wearers head.
It will thus be seen that there is provided. a
The l (n 4 sport cap in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above described invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understoodthatfall matter herein set forth or shown'in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to protect by United States Letters Patent:
