This invention relates ton'ew and useilulA improvements in guide:4 strips' for building; wall structures and' more particularly' to an improved construction strip of that disclosed in my; copending' application' Serial No: 2983037, iiled July 10, 1952.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a guide strip for outside wall strucm tures having means for anchoring wire reinforcing mesh thereto so that a wire mesh may be anchored between two of the strips to form a reinforcement for a mixture applied to a wall surface between two of the strips.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a guide strip for outside wall sections including a hollow V-shaped member whose walls have anchoring tongues struck therefrom to provide openings through which* a stucco may pass and means for anchoring a reinforcing wire mesh to the strip.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a joint-forming strip for use in constructing outside walls, which strip is provided with a vertical guide portion for one end of a trowel used in smoothing a mix placed on a wall surface between parallel strips.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a joint for outside wall sections that is extremely small and compact in structure, light in weight, strong and reliable in use,
inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a wall structure constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view oi one end of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of Figure 2; and
` Figure 4 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral l represents i 4 Claims: (CIL. '12x-281)? an elongated V-shaped strip member hafving a lowerfhorizontal walll2' an'd af verticallyli'nclined upper wall |42 The `striplrnember l is@ provided with a substantially half roundf apexi6 tha-t' connectsthe=walls I2' and lili; and the lower periphery of the apex t6 extendsbelowfthe'-waf1l'4 l2 to form a stop surface for one end of a trowel and a ledge forming surface for a wall nishing material such as a stucco mix M.
A longitudinal channel I8 is depressed from the wall i2 and includes a vertical part 20 spaced from the apex I6 to form a guide surface for one end of a trowel.
The outer free longitudinal portion of the wall l2 is bent downwardly to form a vertical ange 22 having apertures 24 that will receive the Shanks of headed fasteners 26 employed for securing flange 22 against a wall surface S. The outer free longitudinal portion of the wall I4 is bent upwardly to form a vertical attaching flange 28 having longitudinally spaced apertures 3i) accommodating fasteners 32.
The upper wall it is formed with a plurality of diamond-shaped and triangular-shaped apertures 34 and 3E through which a stucco mix may pass. Apertures 38 in wall i2 function similar to the apertures 34 and 35.
A row of longitudinally spaced upwardly extending anchoring tongues or tabs All are struck from the central portion of wall hl and extend throughout the length of the member lil to engage openings adjacent the lower edge of a wire reinforcing screen or mesh 2. A row oi" longitudinally spaced T-shaped tongues or tabs 44 are struck from the webs of the channel I8 and extend downwardly from the channel I8 to be engaged in openings adjacent the open edge cf a wire reinforcing screen or mesh 42.
In practical use of the present invention, a plurality of strips, are secured to the wall surface S in vertically spaced horizontal relation with the wire mesh between adjacent strips being anchored to the tongue 44 of an upper strip and the tongues E of a lower strip. A cement and Zonlite insulation mix St is then applied tothe wall surface S between the strips I0 and is smoothed oii by a trowel (not shown). A regular stucco mix M is next supplied to the mix St with a trowel riding against the apex l5 of a lower strip and part IE of an upper strip so that the outside wall will have a siding effect.
inasmuch as the walls l2 and i4 are provided with the apertures 34, St and 38, the mix applied between adjacent strips will pass into and through the members it to bind the 'members I0 to the mix and the mix between adjacent pairs of strips together.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
l. An outside wall construction strip comprisingr an elongated V-shaped member including a horizontal lower wall and a vertically inclined upper wall, said member having a smoothly rounded apex joining said walls, vertical attaching flanges on said walls remote from said apex, said apex having a lower surface extending below said horizontal wall to form a stop surface for one edge of a trowel, a depending channel formed in said horizontal wall having a vertical part spaced from said apex to form a guide surface for one end of a trowel, said walls having perforations therein through which stucco may pass, and anchoring means on said walls for anchoring reinforcing mesh to said walls.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said anchoring means comprises tongues struck from said walls.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said tongues of said horizontal Wall are T-shaped to engage through openings in a wire mesh.
In a building structure including a vertical wall surface, a plurality of spaced parallel substantially V-shaped horizontal members secured to the Wall surface, each of said members including a perforated horizontal lower wall and a perforated vertically inclined upper wall that extends upwardly toward the wall surface, upwardly extending tongues struck from the upper walls, downwardly extending tongues struck from the lower wall, and a mesh extending between adjacent members and having its upper portion engaged with the downwardly extending tongues of one member and its lower portion engaged with the upwardly extending tongues of a lower member, said mesh being covered by a cementitious mix.
