3 Claims.
"Ihepresent invention relates broadly to 'paint brushes andis.v morenpartioularly concerned with a paint applicator having a, hand. controlled'` feed fromapaint reservoir to a distributor.
The` primaryI objectI of the invention is to pro,- videv a device o f the character referred toA which can be handled like an ordinary paint brush` and the paint4 feedk controlledy during the painting operation.
Another obieot of the, invention, is4 to-provide an, appliance off the character ref-erred to which will feed and` evenly distribute paint from a supply conduit.
Still.` another, object of. the invention. is. to provide an appliance with a. manually controlled feed..o.f simpler and. more compact.. construction than that in prior, devices.`
With the foregoing and other objects and ad- Vantages in. view the invention consists of the novell construction andn arrangement ofv parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure 1 is a front elevation-of the appliance.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken at a right angle totheyiew in rFigure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlargedsectional detail ofthe feed control valve.
Figure 5 is a transverse section of.' the fanshaped feed and distributionmember.
Like numerals are used iny ther description and drawings to designate the Same structural parts.
Referring particularly to Figure 1, the applialice comprises, among other elements, a tubular handle ID with the outside, hand manipulated control lever Il, which actuates, the interiorly contained feed valve; couplingl I2 for hose to the reservoir. of,v paint; a painting iroll I 3 and aremovable guardi or shield I4 to protect the painter and obviate dripping when. the applianceis. used onverticalor overhead surfaces,`
The handle, which may be either wooden or plastic, is tubular and contains a section of tubing I5. This has an exterior thread on the upper extremity which protrudes sufficiently to engage the coupling connection of the hose I6 from a container. operating by gravity or pressure. The construction thereof forms no part of the invention and therefore is not shown.
The lower extremity of tube |5 is flared as at I1 and fits inside the neck of a feed and distribution member I8 which is flared to fan shape and is substantially oblong in cross-section. This member is-open at the bottom and comprises` two angedsections lwhichV t together; as yshown in Figure r5. One section `is provided vwith longittudinal` ribs |9- which diverge from the upper orifice; `and subdivide thev chamberof member -IIB into gradually expanded channels toinduceeven distribution ofthe paintto a iiexibleefeedroll- 21) positioned longitudinally inclose proximity to the lower orifice-of' member If The two sections ofN |8 are provided at thebottom with arcuate lateral'sv 2|', which are substantially concentric with feedY roll 2'0 to eifectually direct the; flowfof paint to theV top thereof.
A forked rframe 22 ofv suitablev materia/1g 'such as aluminum, with sid'efflanges to add lstrength asY in a channel' beam, isy fitted on the lower extremity ofl the handle in rigidv attachment and the branchesv 23 of-` this forked component are formed tol fit aroundvlv the` narrow sides ofi' com ponent I8 andthen-diverge, as shown in-F-igure, toy contain they feed roll 20 and applicator roil I3. The latter isy positioned beneath theA former with their peripheries inl contact and the vrota-ble shafts or spindles 241 and 25, on which theyare respectively secured, are journal'edl` in` slots init'he lower extremities of-"thefork prongs to provide adjustment.
Pulleys 26 and 21 are fixedlymounted-I onthe shafts 24- and' 25betweenthe rolls |'3'andi20z and a crossed belt 28 connectssaid'pulleys. Outside ofpulley 21, and between same and the fork prong;l is mounted' a traction wlleel1294wt`nicl'rl is designed to run on the-Workl surface and power the two pulleys;v thus rotating'thetwo rolls.
The guard or shield: |41 is split longitudinally totform two`v sections ywhich' are-designedtoencase the frame and rolls,- exceptfor-suifioient exposure of i the painting-roll; as well the traction whee129', tor facilitate the work.
These two sections, when joined, fit around the handle I0 andare clasped in union-by spring claspsA 30' which" are 'spaced'. ati suitable; intervals along the meeting edgesv and engage; tliefork between its fianges;
Feed roll 2B is preferably made of rubber while the applicator roll I3 is fitted with an absorbent jacket 3|, of porous rubber, or felt, or a fabric, as desired. The kind of jacket will depend largely on the kind of paint to be used.
The valve which is operated by spring lever I and controls the supply of iiuid to the distributor I8, is set transversely in handle IfIv and comprises a tubular case 32 which is apertured to allow the feed tube I5 to pass through. The case is interiorly threaded where it projects out-l side and a plug 33 threads into this end and contains a spring pressed cylindrical valve 34 which fits two registering apertures in pipe I5 and normally seals both. A centered pin 35 projects from the valve 34 and through the end of valve case 32 to contact the spring lever II.
When this lever is depressed by the painter the valve is forced back against spring and opens the conduit of tube I5 and thus opens the conduit for ow of paint from the reservoir to the feed and distribution member I8. The operator can interrupt the oW at any time by merely releasing lever II.
As different embodiments may be made of this inventive concept and modifications may be made in the embodiment herein before shown and described, it will be understood that the matter herein is to be interpreted as illustrative merely, and not in a limiting sense.
